Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assimilation of the Gaelic Irish lordships into the British state marks the end of medieval Ireland and the beginning of a society more recognizable to modern eyes. A number of native Irish lordships in west and south Offaly - namely Eile Ui Chearbhaill, Delbhna Eathra, Fir Cheall, and Muintir Thadhgain - were fundamentally transformed by the imposition of plantation schemes there in 1619-20. This book highlights the importance of regionality in the archaeological study of early modern Ireland, detailing the impact of colonization on local communities, as well as the changes wrought by the great cultural movements of the time, namely the Reformation, Counter-Reformation, and the Renaissance. By reappraising the various categories of secular and non-secular buildings - such as tower houses, fortified manor houses, farmsteads, and churches - the book goes beyond morphological concerns and explores the extent to which individuals influenced their own social, economic, and cultural positions in society, and how the physical and mental worlds of the native and settler communities were challenged and transformed by encounters with the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautifully illustrated and closely argued book, a completely updated and much expanded third edition of his magisterial survey, Curl describes in lively and stimulating prose the numerous revivals of the Egyptian style from Antiquity to the present day. Drawing on a wealth of sources, his pioneering and definitive work analyzes the remarkable and persistent influence of Ancient Egyptian culture on the West. The author deftly develops his argument that the civilization of Ancient Egypt is central, rather than peripheral, to the development of much of Western architecture, art, design, and religion. Curl examines: the persistence of Egyptian motifs in design from Graeco-Roman Antiquity, through the Medieval, Baroque, and Neo-Classical periods rise of Egyptology in the nineteenth and twentieth-century manifestations of Egyptianisms prompted by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb various aspects of Egyptianizing tendencies in the Art Deco style and afterwards. For students of art, architectural and ancient history, and those interested in western European culture generally, this book will be an inspiring and invaluable addition to the available literature.
