Book excerpt: Lady Jane Grey Dudley was proclaimed Queen of England on 10 July 1553 following the untimely death of Henry VIII's only son and successor, King Edward VI. But sixteen-year- old Jane did not have the support of the majority of her would-be subjects. They rallied instead to Henry VIII's eldest daughter, Mary Tudor. Jane was deposed just nine days after her reign began, earning for her the sobriquet 'The Nine Days Queen.' She was imprisoned in the Tower for six months before finally being executed on 12 February 1554. Queen Jane remains the only English monarch of the past five centuries for whom no genuine portrait is known to have survived. Dozens of images have been put forward over those five centuries, but none has yet been conclusively authenticated. Neither has any comprehensive academic study of the iconography of Jane Grey Dudley ever been previously undertaken or published. Now, through almost a decade of research leading up to this volume, twenty-nine surviving portrait-images said to depict Jane have been carefully and systematically sought out, analyzed, and contextualized in an effort to determine whether any of them may be a reliable likeness. A handful of additional paintings all now lost are also discussed in detail. Finally, the single written account of Jane's physical appearance, an account upon which historians have relied over the past century, is analyzed for its own authenticity.

Book Synopsis Rossetti's Obsession by : Jill Iredale
Download or read book Rossetti's Obsession written by Jill Iredale and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Morris (née Burden) was the wife of William Morris, and the favoured model of Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In his maturity Rossetti drew and painted Jane with an obsessional intensity and she was cast in many literary and mythological roles, including Dante's Beatrice, Pandora, Proserpine and Astarte. Whether in direct or symbolic guise, Jane's features are depicted with a sombre intensity that offer a glimpse into Rossetti's troubled soul. The exhibition, marking the centenary of Jane's death, brings together compelling and rarely seen drawings and pastel studies of Jane by Rossetti. The exhibition also features images of Jane as herself and explores her life and interests beyond modelling. Jane Morris (1839-1914) was a talented embroiderer, linguist and musician and played a role in the family business Morris & Co. The recent publication of her letters (The Collected Letters of Jane Morris, edited by Jan Marsh and Frank C. Sharp, 2012), gives an unparalleled insight into her interests and personality, balancing the sullen and silent impression that Rossetti's paintings have immortalised. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was the leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His depictions of Jane ensured that her face became the iconic image of Pre-Raphaelite womanhood. Download or read book The English Renaissance Miniature written by Roy C. Strong and published by London : Thames and Hudson. This book was released on 1983 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive survey of England's unique contribution to the art of the Renaissance: the portrait miniature. Arising out of the technical traditions of medieval manuscript illumination and inspired by the art of the Valois court, the portrait miniature, or limning (from' illumination') as it was then called, was to remain for a century the ideal vehicle for the expression of the cult of the Crown, an art form peculiarly suited to the ruling classes of post-Reformation England." -- Book jacket.
