He was top adviser the Chinese Government, who ran the Chinese monetary system for decades. Kann came to China in 1901 and managed to get out of China just as Mao took over in 1949. He then lived in Hong Kong and Los Angeles. This catalog is a classic work essentially of his own coin collection, including coins he collected while working as a banker and as an official of the Chinese Government in Shanghai. Some of these coins are extremely rare and a few may not even exist any more, because the Chinese Government ordered all coins to be surrendered to the government to be melted down and made into bullion. Thus, any Chinese person who held on to these coins, did so in secret. Kann, as a non-Chinese, was one of the few that was allowed to keep his coins. When, after his death, his coin collection was sold in several auctions, they fetched millions of dollars. The New York Times for May 23, 1971, page D37, reports: Among the items listed to go on the block are 1200 lots from the finest collection of Chinese coins - the collection of Eduard Kann, a banker who lived in China for 47 years. During his long numismatic career, Mr. Kann compiled the Catalog of Chinese Coins which was published in 1953. This high quality reprint of the original 1953 book is based on one of the few copies of the original work still known to exist.

Book excerpt: For a thousand years across the length and breadth of China and beyond, people have burned paper replicas of valuable things—most often money—for the spirits of deceased family members, ancestors, and myriads of demons and divinities. Although frequently denigrated as wasteful and vulgar and at times prohibited by governing elites, today this venerable custom is as popular as ever. Burning Money explores the cultural logic of this common practice while addressing larger anthropological questions concerning the nature of value. The heart of the work integrates Chinese and Western thought and analytics to develop a theoretical framework that the author calls a “materialist aesthetics.” This includes consideration of how the burning of paper money meshes with other customs in China and around the world. The work examines the custom in contemporary everyday life, its origins in folklore and history, as well as its role in common rituals, in the social formations of dynastic and modern times, and as a “sacrifice” in the act of consecrating the paper money before burning it. Here the author suggests a great divide between the modern means of cultural reproduction through ideology and reification, with its emphasis on nature and realism, and previous pre-capitalist means through ritual and mystification, with its emphasis on authenticity. The final chapters consider how the burning money custom has survived its encounter with the modern global system and internet technology. The largest project looked at the metal content of Chinese cash coins over a period of more than 2,000 years. Although the results of the survey were published in 1989, the full details of the survey and photographs of the coins tested are presented here for the first time, along with an introduction by Joe Cribb and comments by Michael Cowell. Since then, smaller metallurgical projects have been undertaken at the British Museum, looking at specific questions, such as the iron content of Song dynasty coins, the brass content of Qing dynasty coins, and the question of metal supply for Qing dynasty coins. The results of these projects are brought together here for ease of reference, and are presented in chronological order of the material examined. In the last decade, numismatists and scientists in China have also been looking at similar questions, using coins from archaeological sites. Zhou Weirong's new book, Chinese Coins: Alloy Composition and Metallurgical Research, is now available, and an English version of the introduction, postscript and contents pages are published here.
