Download or read book Edward Burne-Jones, Victorian Artist-dreamer written by Stephen Wildman and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1998 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is issued in conjunction with the 1998 exhibition of the same name held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and scheduled for venues in England and France. Burnes-Jones (1833-1898) created a style that had widespread influence on both British and European art--a narrative style derived from medieval legend and fused with the influence of Italian Renaissance masters, a style that ceded popularity to a growing taste for abstraction at the end of the 19th century. Now Burne-Jones's star has risen again, and this catalogue contains full discussion of his life and work and representation of his prodigious output of drawings and paintings. 9.5x12.5"Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis European Textiles by : Christa C. Mayer-Thurman
Download or read book European Textiles written by Christa C. Mayer-Thurman and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2001 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume catalogues the more than 250 textiles and objects made of fabric that were part of Robert Lehman's bequest to the Metropolitan Museum in 1975. Many of these textiles were used as hangings, covers, or upholstery to embellish the Lehmans' elegant townhouse in Manhattan. They represent sixty-five years of assembling, owning, and living with historic fabrics on a day-to-day basis, and they document an American style of living and interior decoration that has largely disappeared. Among the highlights of the collection are two series of embroidered roundels from fifteenth-century Flanders that illustrate the lives of Saints Martin and Catherine of Alexandria; four large tapestries, including the Last Supper after Bernaert van Orley that is arguably the finest Renaissance tapestry in an American collection; and a number of ecclesiastical vestments and panels of magnificent silks and velvets in an array of techniques and styles that span six centuries. Comparative illustrations supplement the catalogue entries. Glossary, bibliography, and index. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
Book Synopsis Jules Breton, Painter of Peasant Life by : Annette Bourrut Lacouture
Download or read book Jules Breton, Painter of Peasant Life written by Annette Bourrut Lacouture and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jules Breton (1827-1906), known as one of the first 'peasant painters', created beautiful scenes of rural French life and was a highly popular figure among the Salon artists of his era. Taking his inspiration from his native Artois and from the landscapes of Brittany, where he stayed for long periods, he painted peasant women and men performing their daily activities, meticulously observing their world and making it a place of peace and harmony. During the second half of the nineteenth century, rewards and official decorations were heaped upon him, and his paintings were purchased not only by the emperor but also by collectors in America, Britain and Ireland. However, Breton's work became eclipsed by the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century, and he was eventually forgotten. This book now pays Breton the tribute that he deserves. It traces the development of his career and the forces that influenced him from his childhood through his early training in Belgium and Paris to his years in Brittany. The book presents and discusses a number of important paintings by Breton, some of which have been almost unknown until now, and it shows how they reflect the artist's social and humanitarian concerns as well as his painterly abilities.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Art and Classical Myth by : Jennie Hirsh
Download or read book Contemporary Art and Classical Myth written by Jennie Hirsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary art is deeply engaged with the subject of classical myth. Yet within the literature on contemporary art, little has been said about this provocative relationship. Composed of fourteen original essays, Contemporary Art and Classical Myth addresses this scholarly gap, exploring, and in large part establishing, the multifaceted intersection of contemporary art and classical myth. Moving beyond the notion of art as illustration, the essays assembled here adopt a range of methodological frameworks, from iconography to deconstruction, and do so across an impressive range of artists and objects: Francis Al?s, Ghada Amer, Wim Delvoye, Luciano Fabro, Joanna Frueh, Felix Gonzales-Torres, Duane Hanson, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Kara Walker, and an iconic photograph by Richard Drew subsequently entitled The Falling Man.? Arranged so as to highlight both thematic and structural affinities, these essays manifest various aspects of the link between contemporary art and classical myth, while offering novel insights into the artists and myths under consideration. Some essays concentrate on single works as they relate to specific myths, while others take a broader approach, calling on myth as a means of grappling with dominant trends in contemporary art.
