Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of Objects of British Heraldic Art to the End of the Tudor Period N a year that sees the round world at war, when the peace of Savile Row must be maintained by a navy at sea and by armies in the field, the Burlington Club has gathered together a few rare things which tell of ancient wars. For in war was the beginning of all our heraldry. It belongs now to peace. War-paint is the dingiest hue of the palette. The fighting ships go out of port without any of the old braveries of figure-head and stern-gallery on which carver and painter had done gay work. The scarlet of the king's coat has shrunk to a collar - patch: the banners stand no more with the English battle: the men who fight in the burrowing warfare of trench and sap are clad in the livery of the mud about them. For the last armorial badges we must look closely to those poor 'devices which the button-maker's cramped art has stamped out according to the sealed patterns of the War Office. Very poor and meanly devised are those little regimental badges. Yet something of the potency of the old charm remains with them: pride goes with the swan that was Bohun's swan: a Staffordshire man will do honour to the knot on his cap and collar, the knot that was Stafford's long before the soldier had his first musket. Heraldry belongs to peace. Nevertheless it has the memory of war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldic Book-Stamps: Figured and Described The large majority of the stamps illustrated herewith are' in the British Museum, but I have included a few in private ownership, and to these owners my sincere thanks are due for their kindness in allowing me to copy the various coats. I have in every case mentioned this private ownership, and where such mention is not found the book from which the drawing has been made is in the British Museum, either in the Department of Printed Books or in the Department of Manuscripts. Heraldry is of military origin, but its decorative side, and the various exact rules which govern it, were probably brought into use during the Middle Ages, in connection with the frequent Tournaments which were governed by strict rules. The ceremonies to be followed at the Tournaments were very closely laid down heralds as well as their assistants of all sorts came into much prominence, and personal insignia acquired an importance they have never had since. Even now there are a few signs of ancient personal heraldry existing in our army; crests and tartans of private families may be found among the Highland regiments, but the modern tendency, especially since the late war in South Africa, has been to abolish such peculiarities. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Ecclesiastical Heraldry Accordingly the' work consists of Two Parts. The First deals with the general use of Armorial Insignia by the Ecclesiastics of the Western Church from the earliest times to the present.' This portion contains 'much curious. And out of the way information on subjects which have never yet been fully treated by an English writer. Its information and illustrations have been gathered not only from collections of coins, medals, and seals, and from many scarce works, unknown to the general reader, which are only accessible in Public Libraries of the first class, but are also largely derived from the extensive notes made by me in a lengthened experience of over thirty years' travel in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, etc. In the course. Of that time I have always had in mind a work on the present lines, and consequently have amassed, in an area which extends from the Peninsula to Poland and from Sicily to Sweden, the information which I have now the pleasure to make accessible. It is confidently hoped that the artist, and the collector of books, plate, seals, china, bookplates, etc., as well as the antiquary and student' of Heraldry, will find here much that is useful and interesting. The Second Parz' contains an enlargement and corree tion of the Notice of the Arms of the Episcopates of Great Britain and Ireland, with Heraldic Notes, writtenby me in illustration of a series of illuminated coats of arms, published by A. Warren in This book (of which Her Majesty the Queen was pleased to accept the dedication) has been long out of. Print, and repeated requests have been made to me that its letterpress should be reprinted. This is now done, with much additional historical information, -with some corrections, and a new series of plates. This portion of the work also includes the arms of the numerous colonial Sees, and those of the chief Abbeys and Religious Houses, the Deaneries, and other ancient Ecclesiastical Foundations in England. The Continental portion of this section contains the blazon of the arms of the Popes from I 144 to the present time an account of the great Religious Principalities of the Holy Roman Empire and much historical and heraldic information with regard to the principal Sees, Religious Houses and Chapters in Germany, Italy, 'france, Poland, and the Low Countries as well as the arms and devices of the most important religious Orders and communities; and of the British and some foreign Universities. Book excerpt: "Fictitious and Symbolic Creatures in Art- With Special Reference to their Use in British Heraldry" was written by British author John Vinycomb as a survey of creatures that appear on British coats of arms and other heraldic items. Vinycomb's work is a detailed examination of the origins and history of fictitious and symbolic creatures that appear in English heraldry. The book opens with a detailed introduction from the author, in which he explains the inspiration behind this work and the methods he has followed in compiling this collection. From there, the author's survey begins in earnest. The classic symbolic creatures are discussed in detail, including dragons, the Pegasus, gryphons, unicorns, mermaids, the heraldic pelican, and many more. In all, more than sixty different creatures are profiled. Detailed illustrations accompany the text, and assist the reader in contextualizing the information presented. "Fictitious and Symbolic Creatures in Art" is a fascinating book for those interested in British heraldry. Vinycomb's work is well researched and equally well presented, his findings are revelatory and honest. The illustrations are well done and representative of what you would expect to find on a coat of arms. For those interested in the subject matter, John Vinycomb's "Fictitious and Symbolic Creatures in Art" is a must read. Interesting and insightful, the book is a worthy addition to anyone's personal library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
