Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the emergence and role of the art salon in the Arab region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing on Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq. Institutional forms of exhibiting and teaching art emerged in the Middle East and North Africa in late colonial and early post-colonial contexts. The book examines how the salon had an impact on the formation of taste and on debates on art, and discusses the transfers and cultural interactions between the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. Following the institutional model of the Paris salons, art salons emerged in Algiers, Tunis and Cairo starting in the late 1880s. In Beirut, the salon tradition reached its peak only after independence in the mid-twentieth century. Baghdad never had a formal salon, but alternative spaces and exhibition formats developed in Iraq from the late 1940s onwards. As in Paris, the salons in the region often defined the criteria of artistic production and public taste. The impact of the salon also lay in its ability to convey particular values, attitudes and aspirations. At the same time, the values and attitudes promoted by the salon as well as the salon itself were often subject to debate, which led to the creation of counter-salons or alternative exhibition practices. The art salon helps us to understand changes in the art systems of these countries, including the development of art schools, exhibition spaces and artist societies, and gives insight into the power dynamics at play. It also highlights networks and circulations between the Arab region and Europe.

Book excerpt: This publication accompanies the first exhibition dedicated to the manifestation of the Surrealist movement in Egypt. With images of over 200 works, it offers the reader a first-hand look at this artistic world. Through various visual (painting, drawing, photography) and literary media, this catalogue provides visitors with an indispensable companion for understanding the effervescent artistic context of 1930s-40s Egypt. More than example of aesthetic research, the creation of the movement was stimulated by a real revolutionary impetus. It stood against the opinions and conventions of the time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustave Aimard wrote the daring Western book "The Flying Horseman." With the American frontier as its backdrop in the middle of the 19th century, the plot centres on the mysterious and talented horseman known simply as "The Flying Horseman." The Flying Horseman is well known for both his enigmatic past and extraordinary riding prowess. He faces a number of difficulties while traversing the wild west, such as run-ins with lawbreakers, disputes with Native American groups, and personal grudges. The Flying Horseman faces his own demons, forges connections with surprising allies, and travers’s hazardous terrain all along the way. The book explores themes of justice, atonement, and the collision of civilizations on the frontier in between the action and adventure. Readers are drawn into a world of peril and excitement by Aimard's vivid imagery and gripping story, where it is frequently difficult to distinguish between heroism and villainy. A legendary story of the Wild West, "The Flying Horseman" is full of bold adventures, memorable showdowns, and surprising turns. Fans of Western literature and adventure fiction will find Aimard's novel to be engrossing to read because of his skill at writing and his ability to capture the spirit of the frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Klee experienced his 1914 trip to Tunisia as a major breakthrough for his art: ÒColor and I are one,Ó he famously wrote. ÒI am a painter.Ó Kandinsky and Klee in Tunisia sets the scene for KleeÕs breakthrough with a close study of the parallel voyage undertaken in 1904Ð5 by Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele MŸnter, who would later become Klee's friends. This artist couple, then at an early stage in their celebrated careers, produced a rich body of painting and photography known only to specialists. Paul KleeÕs 1914 trip with August Macke and Louis Moilliet, in contrast, is a vaunted convergence of cubism and the exotic. Roger Benjamin refigures these two seminal voyages in terms of colonial culture and politics, the fabric of ancient Tunisian cities, visual ethnography, and the tourist photograph. The book looks closely at the cities of Tunis, Sousse, Hammamet, and Kairouan to flesh out a profound confrontation between European high modernism and the wealth of Islamic lifeways and architecture. Kandinsky and Klee in Tunisia offers a new understanding of how the European avant-garde was formed in dialogue with cultural difference.

Book excerpt: "Modern Arab Art provides a historical and theoretical overview of the forces that have spawned artistic movements across the Middle East from the 1940s through today. Nada Shabout recognizes the important distinction between Arabic art and Islamic art, and views them as overlapping rather than synonymous subjects. Based on interviews with Arab artists, reviews of Arabic resources, and visits to sites and galleries in the Arab world, Shabout provides an introduction to a field that has been long neglected. With particular emphasis on production, reception, and the intersection between art and politics in Iraq and Palestine, she reveals the fallacy in Western fascination with Arab art as a timeless and exotic 'other'"--Jacket.
