Defining a drawing as "any unique work on paper", Sayer examines a wide range of them in relation to the social influences of the period in which they were created, the genre and the medium, and discusses stylistic changes and changes in perception such as in the many "revivals" that drawing has experienced since the 1920's. He also provides drawings of natural history, Aborigines and landscape, portraits, scenes of contemporary life of the 1850's, decorative drawing, watercolors, and examples of surrealistic techniques.

Book excerpt: "Art auctions have long captured the public imagination. They regularly make news headlines and have become synonymous with glamour, money and social distinction. The marketing of auction houses and the works they sell has resulted in firms attaining authoritative positions and the ability both to influence and reflect collecting tastes. Pedigree and panache is the first comprehensive history of the art auction in Australia. In this fascinating work, Shireen Huda investigates the construction of the glamorous reputation of art auctions and art auction houses. Featuring absorbing case studies of key art auctions and major art auction houses in Australia (including Christies, Sothebys and Deutscher-Menzies) the work provides an overview of the origin and international development of art auctions. The development of the Australian marketplace is then explored, detailing colonial inception and continuing until Christies' withdrawal of its saleroom presence in 2006."--Provided by publisher.

The exquisite watercolors, drawings, and pastels reproduced here capture a broad range of Irish experience, extending beyond picturesque landscapes and pretty colleens to Irish emigrants arriving in America, polar expeditions, Maori encampments, army barracks, horse races, taverns, grand country houses, and the interiors of Irish cabins." "Key Irish artists such as George Barret, Francis Danby, Frederick William Burton, and Jack Yeats, along with many less well known figures, are seen in historical and social contexts. Irish painters abroad - in North America, Australia, New Zealand, India, and elsewhere - are treated in a special section. Artists who visited and were inspired by Ireland are also represented." "The comprehensive text accompanies more than 400 illustrations, among them many unfamiliar works from museums and private collections around the world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Thomas Gill, or STG as he was universally known, was Australia’s most significant and popular artist of the mid-nineteenth century. For his contemporaries he epitomised ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ basking in the glow of the gold rushes. He worked in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and left some of the most memorable images of urban and rural life in colonial Australia. A passionate defender of Indigenous Australians and of the environment, Gill in his art celebrated the emerging quintessential Australian character. This is the first major comprehensive book to be devoted to Gill and presents a radical reassessment of one of the most important figures in Australian colonial art and reproduces, in some instances for the first time, some of the most startling images from nineteenth-century Australian art. There will be an exhibition of S.T. Gill’s work at the State Library of Victoria in July 2015 and at the National Library of Australia in June 2016, plus smaller shows in regional Victorian galleries. In association with the State Library of Victoria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961 the 22-year-old Mike Brown joined the New Zealand artist, Ross Crothall, in an old terrace house in inner Sydney's Annandale. Over the following two years the artists filled the house with a remarkable body of work. Launched with an equally extraordinary exhibition, the movement they called Imitation Realism introduced collage, assemblage and installation to Australian art for the first time. Laying the groundwork for a distinctive Australian postmodernism, Imitation Realism was also the first Australian art movement to respond in a profound way to Aboriginal art, and to the tribal art of New Guinea and the Pacific region. By the mid-1960s Brown was already the most controversial figure in Australian art. In 1963 a key work was thrown out of a major travelling exhibition for being overtly sexual; a year later he publicly attacked Sydney artists and critics for having failed the test of integrity. Finally, in 1966-67, Brown became the only Australian artist to have been successfully prosecuted for obscenity. Brown spent the last 28 years of his life in Melbourne, where his reputation for radicalism and nonconformity was cemented with his multiplicity of styles, exploration of themes of sexuality, and transgressive commitment to the ideal of street art and graffiti. Against a background of the counter-culture and the social and political upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, Brown's art and remarkable life of personal and creative struggle is without parallel in Australian art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Singer Sargents approach to watercolour was unconventional. Disregarding late-nineteenth-century aesthetic standards that called for carefully delineated and composed landscapes filled with transparent washes, his confidently bold, dense strokes and loosely defined forms startled critics and fellow practitioners alike. One reviewer in England, where Sargent spent much of his adult life, called his work swagger watercolours. For Sargent, however, the watercolours were not so much about swagger as about a new way of thinking. In watercolour as opposed to oils his vision became more personal and his works more interconnected. Presenting nearly 100 works of art, this book is the first major publication of Sargents watercolours in twenty years. Each chapter highlights a different subject or theme that attracted the artists attention during his travels through Europe and the Middle East: sunlight on stone, figures reclining on grass, patterns of light and shadow. Insightful essays by the worlds leading experts enhance this book and introduce readers to the full sweep of Sargents accomplishments in the medium, in works that delight the eye as well as challenge our understanding of this prodigiously gifted artist.
