Book excerpt: Las semillas son las estructuras de las plantas por las cuales se propagan o reproducen, siendo el principal insumo para la producción de alimentos. De manera general, pueden agruparse en nativas, naturalizadas y mejoradas. Los propios agricultores llevan a cabo la selección, producción, conservación, diversificación y domesticación del primer tipo. Las semillas naturalizadas, por su parte, no son nativas de la región, pero se han adaptado a las condiciones ambientales y, con su uso y manejo, se ha propiciado una mayor diversidad. Por el contrario, las semillas mejoradas son obtenidas por mejoramiento genético, estando sujetas a derechos de propiedad intelectual. Las semillas nativas y naturalizadas son símbolo de identidad, seguridad y soberanía alimentaria. Por ello, en este catálogo se comparte con el lector un abanico de semillas nativas de maíz, frijol, calabaza y chilacayote; además se incluye la semilla naturalizada de haba. Éstas fueron documentadas y colectadas en San Miguel Tlaxcaltepec, y algunas en Santiago Mexquititlán y San Ildefonso Tultepec, para su revaloración y fomento del uso sustentable que coadyuve a su conservación. Finalmente, se presenta el manejo, almacenamiento y selección de la semilla de maíz como cultivo eje en el sistema “milpa”. Cabe señalar que se tiene programado un segundo volumen para presentar otras plantas comestibles.
