Book excerpt: The identification and protection of the state’s anadromous fish-bearing rivers, stream, and lakes is an important regulatory function of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). For these water bodies to be protected (AS 16.05.871), they must be formally listed in the department’s Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing, or Migration of Anadromous Fishes and An Atlas to the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing, or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (referred to as the AWC) which are then adopted by reference into regulation. Water bodies that are not "specified" within the AWC are not afforded that protection. The Catalog provides a listing of streams important to the spawning, rearing, or migration of anadromous fish. The Atlas displays cartographically the location of these specified water bodies and the fish species and life stages found in these water bodies. These fish species include five species of Pacific salmon, species of lamprey, smelt, whitefish, Steelhead Trout, Arctic Char, and Dolly Varden.

Book excerpt: From July 20-August 5th, 2020 and opportunistic dates in September or October, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, will inventory stream fish assemblages and associated habitats in a 82,645 km2 study area selected around the upper Yukon, Tanana, and Copper rivers. Staff identified 255 potential sample sites on small and intermediate sized stream of which we anticipate sampling at least 100 headwater streams and 20 intermediate un-wadeable streams. At each site, prior to electrofishing crews will collect data describing location, water quality, stream characteristics, aquatic habitat, and riparian vegetation. Fish will be collected primarily using backpack and raft mounted electrofishing equipment, and hook-and-line, minnow traps, and aerial observations will be used as supplemental sampling methods. Anadromous fish assemblage data collected will be used to nominate waters to the State of Alaska’s Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (Anadromous Waters Catalog, AWC), or to update fish life stage information for waters already listed in the AWC. All sampling data will be available via the ADF&G Alaska Freshwater Fish Inventory (AFFI) online mapping application.

Book excerpt: In 2023 and 2024, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Sport Fish will base out of the communities of Glenallen and Cordova to inventory stream fish assemblages and associated aquatic riparian habitats in an 80,879 km study area selected to include the Copper River and Bering River watersheds in southcentral Alaska. We identified >200 potential target sites on smaller headwater and slightly larger un-wadeable streams from which we anticipate sampling approximately 72 headwater streams and 4 un-wadeable streams annually (152 total sites in 2023 and 2024). At each site, prior to conducting electrofishing activities, we will collect data describing location, water quality, stream characteristics, aquatic habitat, and riparian vegetation. Fish will be collected primarily using backpack and raft-mounted electrofishing equipment and minnow traps. Anadromous fish assemblage information collected will be used to nominate waters to the State of Alaska’s Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes, or to update fish life stage information for waters already in the catalog. All sampling data will be available via the ADF&G Fish Resource Monitor - Fish Inventory online mapping service.
