Stud takes us into this strange and seductive world of horse breeding. Download or read book Nae-Née written by Stephanie C. Fox and published by QueenBeeBooks. This book was released on 2014-01-18 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nae-Née is a dystopian science fiction story. It is a cautionary tale of a loss of liberty along with our ecosystem. It takes place in the present. Nae-Née posits a world not unlike our own, as it confronts the major taboo of our time: the conflict between human overpopulation and the human desire to pass on one’s DNA and culture, and to rest assured that the next generation will care for the previous one and continue all that matters to it. Our planet’s ecosystem is being stressed past capacity to the brink of collapse due to biodiversity loss, rising sea levels, floods, droughts, overdependence on fossil fuels, and the climate changes that drive all that. In short, the human species is in dire trouble due to overpopulation – its own. No one seems remotely inclined to sacrifice any comfort or control over their habits in order to save the environment and ultimately their own future existence, happiness or sense of purpose. But there is a significant difference: nanite technology has advanced sufficiently to be of actual, practical use to physicians and scientists. Nae-Née is a safe, reliable, user-friendly form of birth control. It is a microscopic device made of nanites – little robots. It contains a life-time supply of super-concentrated RU486, which the device releases whenever it detects a rise in hormones that indicates a fertilized embryo is about to implant itself. All that the inventors – a husband-and-wife team – wanted was a convenient device that would prevent pregnancy every time without constantly pumping a woman’s body full of artificial hormones. Its name literally translates as “not born” and was chosen by Avril, the wife, to reflect her husband’s Scottish background and her own French ancestry. The story is told from Avril's point of view, a woman with Asperger's and a professor of women's medical history. The world’s leaders have decided to make it the duty of every human being to participate in a bold new world policy, and they have drafted a treaty at the United Nations, and every nation has agreed to sign onto it. This is done on a date that doom-sayers have anticipated with predictions of various – and often unrelated – dire consequences: December 21, 2012. Under the terms of the treaty, all women must have a government-registered Nae-Née device. Henceforth, every birth of any new human being must be licensed, and not everyone who wants a license to reproduce shall be granted one.

Book Synopsis The Tenth Life by : Richard Lockridge
Download or read book The Tenth Life written by Richard Lockridge and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the coauthor of the “excellent” Mr. and Mrs. North mysteries: Everything goes to the dogs when Inspector Heimrich must solve a veterinarian’s murder (The New Yorker). Inspector M. L. Heimrich of the New York State Police may not have the flash of hard-boiled city detectives, but there’s no lead the intrepid investigator won’t follow until his every hunch is satisfied . . . When his Great Dane, Colonel, suddenly takes ill, Inspector Heimrich takes the dog to a local vet. Unfortunately, Dr. Barton isn’t able to take the case—he’s lying dead on the clinic’s floor. Now, Heimrich has a case of his own. It’s no surprise to find a needle somewhere in Dr. Barton’s vicinity—after all the man was diabetic—but the residue inside the syringe found next to the body isn’t insulin; it’s a toxic plant extract that causes asphyxiation. With an exotic murder weapon and no obvious motive, Heimrich will have to examine those closest to the good doctor. Since there are suspects aplenty, his investigation risks barking up the wrong tree. But no matter how long it takes, the experienced officer intends to see that justice has its day. The Tenth Life is the 23rd book in the Captain Heimrich Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Download or read book Pet Politics written by Susan Hunter and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars in the disciplines of law, psychology, philosophy, and sociology have published a considerable number of prescriptive, normative, and theoretical studies of animals in society, Pet Politics presents the first study of the development of companion animal or pet law and policy in Canada and the United States by political scientists. The authors examine how people and governments classify three species of pets or companion animals-cats, dogs, and horses-for various degrees of legal protection. They then detail how interest groups shape the agenda for companion animal legislation and regulation, and the legislative and administrative formulation of anticruelty, kennel licensing, horse slaughter, feral and roaming cat, and breed ban policies. Finally, they examine the enforcement of these laws and policies by agencies and the courts. Using an eclectic mix of original empirical data, original case studies, and interviews-and relying on general theories and research about the policy process and the sociopolitical function of legality-the authors illustrate that pet policy is a unique field of political struggle, a conflict that originates from differing perspectives about whether pets are property or autonomous beings, and clashing norms about the care of animals. The result of the political struggle, the authors argue, is difficulty in the enactment of policies and especially in the implementation and enforcement of laws that might improve the welfare of companion animals.
