Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caswell County in the World War, 1917-1918: Service Records of Caswell County Men The Board of County Commissioners of Caswell County, C. H. King, J. M. Williams, and T. H. Hatchett, requested that I should write a character sketch of as many as possible of the Caswell soldiers who took part in the Great World War. This Board felt that it was fitting that some record should be made. In the sketches which follow I have tried in a very humble way to carry out the wishes of these gentlemen, but I wish to express my very great regret that I have been unable to secure full information which would have enabled me to write a sketch of each boy who participated. This work has been a labor of love on my part, and has been done without compensation. I have completed as many sketches as I could, and I very much hope that some one may be able to secure a service record of the boys whose names do not appear which may be added in a future book. May I not leave on record this statement? I saw our boys go forth to battle. They were of the finest kind; strong of muscle, clear of mind, and true of vision. They made for themselves a record of fidelity and courage. They did their duty like men, and, while my sketches are not ornate, and, while they show only in a very humble way the record, still I feel very grateful that I have had the honor to help preserve for future generations their names and activities. Book Synopsis The United States in World War I by : James T. Controvich
Download or read book The United States in World War I written by James T. Controvich and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.

Book excerpt: Caswell County was born in 1777 during the American Revolution and named to honor Richard Caswell, the first governor of North Carolina. Lying in the north central part of the state, Caswell's rolling countryside abounds with soil well suited for many crops, particularly tobacco. It was tobacco and a slave-based plantation economy that generated substantial wealth and political influence before the Civil War. During a period in the early 19th century, both the speakers of North Carolina's Senate and House of Commons were from Caswell County. The resulting wealth and influence produced institutions and structures unsurpassed elsewhere in the state. This included the bank of the county seat, Yanceyville, which before the Civil War was one of the best-capitalized banks in the South. Fortunately, many of the historic buildings remain, and Caswell County today is a popular destination for heritage tourism. The county boasts two National Historic Districts, one national landmark, and numerous structures on the National Register of Historic Places.

Book Synopsis A Man of Bad Reputation by : Drew A. Swanson
Download or read book A Man of Bad Reputation written by Drew A. Swanson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years after the Civil War, North Carolina Republican state senator John W. Stephens was found murdered inside the Caswell County Courthouse. Stephens fought for the rights of freedpeople, and his killing by the Ku Klux Klan ultimately led to insurrection, Governor William W. Holden's impeachment, and the early unwinding of Reconstruction in North Carolina. In recounting Stephens's murder, the subsequent investigation and court proceedings, and the long-delayed confessions that revealed what actually happened at the courthouse in 1870, Drew A. Swanson tells a story of race, politics, and social power shaped by violence and profit. The struggle for dominance in Reconstruction-era rural North Carolina, Swanson argues, was an economic and ecological transformation. Arson, beating, and murder became tools to control people and landscapes, and the ramifications of this violence continued long afterward. The failure to prosecute anyone for decades after John Stephens's assassination left behind a vacuum, as each side shaped its own memory of Stephens and his murder. The malleability of and contested storytelling around Stephens's legacy presents a window into the struggle to control the future of the South.
