Book Synopsis Architecture for the Shroud by : John Beldon Scott
Download or read book Architecture for the Shroud written by John Beldon Scott and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famed linen cloth preserved in Turin Cathedral has provoked pious devotion, scientific scrutiny, and morbid curiosity. Imprinted with an image many faithful have traditionally believed to be that of the crucified Christ "painted in his own blood," the Shroud remains an object of intense debate and notoriety yet today. In this amply illustrated volume, John Beldon Scott traces the history of the unique relic, focusing especially on the black-marble and gilt-bronze structure Guarino Guarini designed to house and exhibit it. A key Baroque monument, the chapel comprises many unusual architectural features, which Scott identifies and explains, particulary how the chapel's unprecedented geometry and bizarre imagery convey to the viewer the supernatural powers of the object enshrined there. Drawing on early plans and documents, he demonstrates how the architect's design mirrors the Shroud's strange history as well as political aspirations of its owners, the Dukes of Savoy. Exhibiting it ritually, the Savoy prized their relic with its godly vestige as a means to link their dynasty with divine purposes. Guarini, too, promoted this end by fashioning an illusionary world and sacred space that positioned the duke visually so that he appeared close to the Shroud during its ceremonial display. Finally, Scott describes how the additional need for an outdoor stage for the public showing of the relic to the thousands who came to Turin to see it also helped shape the urban plan of the city and its transformation into the Savoyard capital. Exploring the mystique of this enigmatic relic and investigating its architectural and urban history for the first time, Architecture for the Shroud will appeal to anyone curious about the textile, its display, and the architectural settings designed to enhance its veneration and boost the political agenda of the ruling family.

Download or read book Undomesticated written by Gary Smith and published by gatekeeper press. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small Nebraska town is terrorized by a serial killer who targets young “good” girls. The prime suspect disappears and may have himself become someone else’s victim. Warren Steelgrave has just written a best-selling novel and gained further nationwide notoriety when he narrowly escaped being murdered at his daughter’s wedding. The local Nebraska town newspaper hires Warren as an investigative reporter because of his unique insights and his uncanny instinct for finding the truth. More papers will be sold and more eyes will be focused on the town’s plight. In this third novel in the Steelgrave series, author and photographer Gary Smith takes us another thought provoking journey with surprising twists and suspense filled alleyways. Smith’s alter ego, Warren Steelgrave, explores the psyche of an “undomesticated” killer who acts without remorse. Warren soon realizes that he shares many traits with the killer. It is a fine line that makes his own “willingness” to do what is necessary actually be socially acceptable. Warren’s romantic kindred spirit, Cindy O’Brien, has been living her life separate; writing songs and performing them across the country. She suddenly joins Warren in Nebraska to escape a deadly stalker. The readers of Smith’s first two books know that Warren will never leave that “stone unturned”. The varied character plots intertwine as the story unfolds. The reader is challenged to confront their own human nature and how they might react given a challenge outside their moral comfort zone. This latest adventure has an ending that won’t be decided by a jury.

Book excerpt: Gary Smith, Photographer, and author of The Willing, uses his unique perspective and well-honed instincts to take us on a journey replete with vivid descriptions of the beauty and culture of Northern Italy. “Real life” fictional character Warren Steelgrave has settled into his author’s persona amongst new-found relatives and friends in a small village in Northern Italy. After three years, his possible soulmate and object of romantic memories, Cindy O’Brian comes back into his life. New adventures unfold involving the son of an old friend and the intrigue of the FBI, a crime family, and a long-lost secret for Nicola Tesla’s “death ray”. Warren is again “willing” to put his life on the line, but can Cindy accept the realization that the man she loves will always “live a life separate” even if they are together? While they are back in the United States, with trouble in tow, his eldest daughter adds insight when she tells Cindy “welcome to Warren’s world.” Perhaps the safest place to enjoy the unfolding of events is from a safe distance as the reader of Mr. Smith’s newest novel.
