Book Synopsis Contemporary Issues of the Semiotics of Law by : Anne Wagner
Download or read book Contemporary Issues of the Semiotics of Law written by Anne Wagner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-09-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law is a symbolic construction and therefore rests on a variety of undertakings. What gives law its meaning is,for some, ideology, for others, the welfare of the majority. However, what is manifest is a conception of the law as a material structure that carries symbols of everyday life. The analyses that are made in the law and semiotics movements show that the laws symbolism cannot be understood by reference only to itself, a strictly legal meaning. It is a symbol that conveys life, a symbol that in itself is contaminated with life, politics, morality and so on. Law and Semiotics is an obvious meeting point between traditions, because it is the place where all the discussions about the law can find a common language. This is a collection of different papers where the institution of the law is investigated, in combination with, and as part of, a multiplicity of sign systems. Firstly, law can be understood as part of a global system of meaning (Part I) ; and, secondly, that despite the homogenising threat of globalisation, the play of legal meaning retains a socio-historical specificity (Part II). The global issues of human migration, human rights, colonisation and transnational power are played out in local spaces, in the public discourses through which they are given localised representation, in moments of activism, and as a tool of subversion. The law is a rhetorical device which at once constitutes these global and local truths but which is also constituted by them.

Book Synopsis English for Lawyers and Law Students by : Astrid Tangl
Download or read book English for Lawyers and Law Students written by Astrid Tangl and published by Linde Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since legal language can neither be taught nor understood without context, English for Lawyers and Law Students essentially serves two purposes: It provides an insight into selected issues of the US legal system and in doing so acquaints the reader with (primarily American) English legal terminology and a variety of law concepts. The book’s contents are selective rather than comprehensive because the focus lies on legal vocabulary rather than knowledge building. Thus, each chapter is followed by a list of related legal terms and concepts, whereby a wide range of legal terminology is defined and explained in English and not forced into a German corset. Among other issues, the book offers a valuable insight into the US trial and jury system, US legal education, the legal profession and various legal (civil and criminal) proceedings. It is a suitable reference book for law students as well as legal professionals and anyBartzone interested in US law and English legal terminology. The author’s main goal is to promote and ease the reader’s understanding of legal terms by contextualizing them, which should enable the legally trained eye to realize the small but subtle differences between the (American) English and related German terms. In addition, the book includes a great number of legal terms and their respective translation into German.

Book Synopsis Serious Fraud and Current Issues by : Sally Ramage
Download or read book Serious Fraud and Current Issues written by Sally Ramage and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fraud is big business and it rots the fabric of finance and accountancy, as it is exercised by all day trading of bonds, junk bonds, loans. Twenty-five years ago, fraud was said to be rapidly expanding and manifests itself by shady deals, fraudulently converted cash. Fraudsters who are active, especially electronic fraud, do in fact treat the use of fraud as serious "business" and the execution of frauds as "work", much as other criminals treat their activities as their "job"! Identity theft poses a frightening threat of being taken in by crooks. If twenty-five years ago it was estimated that the amount of fraudulent cash around the world at any one time more than equalled the Gross National Products of several third-world countries, it would not be believed--a damning indictment indeed. In this fascinating and comprehensive study on Fraud the author takes advantage of the fact that people seem thrilled to hear about frauds, like murders. She has prepared works that will use the reader's' attention to discuss law enforcement and the consequences of breaking the law by committing frauds.
