Book excerpt: Case studies enable aspiring administrators to refine their reaction skills as well as their critical-thinking skills by responding to a multitude of problems in a short time. Originally published in 1998, the case studies in this book provide a broad-based overview of the kinds of real problems that schools were facing at the time. The problems administrators face on a daily basis vary in scope and complexity. Short cases provide opportunities to address, analyse, and resolve problems encountered in the real working environment. Students must actively engage in a process of inquiry and problem solving. This book can be used over several years according to the case studies selected for class use. This is a multicourse, multiyear action case-study text.

Book Synopsis Case Studies on Educational Administration by : Theodore J. Kowalski
Download or read book Case Studies on Educational Administration written by Theodore J. Kowalski and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of case studies for prospective school administrators that emphasizes problem solving, decision-making, and effective management. Based on the conviction that effective practice in school administration requires both leadership and management, this text provides a mix of problems that require administrative decisions as presented in 24 open-ended case studies. In today's reform-minded, information-based society, practitioners must be able to frame problems correctly and then make effective decisions to ameliorate them. As leaders, district and school-level administrators are expected to focus on what should be done to improve schools; as managers, they are expected to focus on how to do things successfully. The cases in this book are designed to make students think about common problems of practice by encouraging them to bridge theory and practice. Each case provides an active form of learning, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to apply knowledge to common problem situations.
Book Synopsis School Leadership by : Benjamin Piltch

Book excerpt: Parents, lawmakers, supervisors, and unions are among the many constituencies that demand influence, if not control, of the educational process. How does the school administrator balance all the needs of the various groups and still remain true to the ultimate, though most powerless constituency: the students? Through case studies and anecdotes based on real-life experiences, the authors share the ups and downs of the educational world, seeking to find the balance that is most effective in ensuring success. School Leadership:Case Studies Solving School Problems details decision making and actions taken that dramatically affect the success of students and schools as well as school systems. This second edition continues and improves on the first edition with a series of new and timely school leadership case studies that require the reader to reflect on the variety of issues that cross the principal's desk every day. The reader will find the case studies and anecdotes highly absorbing. They are so real, fraught with complexity, and will require the reader to use a sophisticated decision-making process.
Book Synopsis Case Studies on Educational Administration by : Theodore J. Kowalski
Download or read book Case Studies on Educational Administration written by Theodore J. Kowalski and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book immerses prospective administrators in the realities of practice and decision-making through the use of a wide range of open-ended case studies. Effective practice in school administration involves making decisions about school management and reform, including issues such as state deregulation, district decentralization, and school restructuring. Leaders need to think beyond management and consider how to affect school culture, professional development, and changing populations. The cases in this book will help leaders address those issues by sharpening three key skills: (1) How to identify and solve problems; (2) How to develop and evaluate alternative solutions; (3) How to continuously refine professional knowledge. New To This Edition: Worksheets are now provided for each case to allow instructors greater flexibility for use. More emphasis on entry-level positions (assistant principal and principal) provides a broader perspective on school leadership. New cases for institutions, such as vocational schools and alternative schools, have been added to reflect the options that are available today with school choice. The cases have been thoroughly revised and updated to cover a range of current problems in practice so that new administrators will recognize the situations and understand how decisions can be applied. A new case dealing with No Child Left Behind Legislation has been added to illustrate current federal legislation. Book Synopsis The Challenges of Educational Leadership by : Michael Bottery
Download or read book The Challenges of Educational Leadership written by Michael Bottery and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `It should be essential reading at the National College for School Leadership′ - Michael Duffy, Times Educational Supplement, Friday Magazine `This book continues Michael Bottery′s principled and persuasive assault on the application by policymakers of fashionable, shallow and decontextualised solutions (in this case leadership) to fundamental problems and issues in the definition, design and purposes of education. It is distinguished by its embeddedness in wider social science ideas and debates, enabling the challenges that schools and teachers face to be set in context, and by its sharp assessment of the impact of decades of the erosion of trust and meaning on educational work′ - Jenny Ozga, Professor of Educational Research, Centre for Educational Sociology, University of Edinburgh In this book Mike Bottery presents critical issues about the purposes of educational leadership. He examines how `official′ concepts of leadership are driven by demands which are not always to the educational, political, or social benefit of practitioners. This book will help educational leaders and aspiring educational leaders to examine their own values and practice.

Book Synopsis EBOOK: Educational Management in Managerialist Times by : Martin Thrupp
Download or read book EBOOK: Educational Management in Managerialist Times written by Martin Thrupp and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2003-08-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This closely argued and lively polemic is recommended for all policymakers and practitioners concerned with educational leadership and change” BJET “Thrupp and Willmott have produced a very important book regarding knowledge claims around issues of policy and practice…. I will be recommending my masters and doctoral students to read the book so that as practitioners they may relish the opportunity to engage with issues of knowledge production. Thrupp and Willmott’s book is directly relevant to every day practice in teaching and learning across the educational system, and it should be required reading for all training programmes because it enables trainees to know and understand the knowledge structures that are being used to control their work and identities.”BJES "... will stir a lot of debate and be seminal to debates about the direction of education management for some time to come." Mike Bottery, Hull University "...a genuinely readable and accessible book that critically engages with school management literature." InService Education Journal This important and provocative book is not another 'how to' educational management text. Instead it offers a critical review of the extensive educational management literature itself. The main concern of the authors is that educational management texts do not do enough to encourage school leaders and teachers to challenge social inequality or the market and managerial reforms of the last decade. They demonstrate this problem through detailed analyses of texts in the areas of educational marketing, school improvement, development planning and strategic human resource management, school leadership and school change. For academics and students, Education Management in Managerialist Times offers a critical guide to existing educational management texts and makes a strong case for redefining educational management along more socially and politically informed lines. The book also offers practitioners alternative management strategies intended to contest, rather than support, managerialism, while being realistic about the context within which those who lead and manage schools currently have to work. This controversial new title brings a new insight to the educational management debate.

Download or read book School Leadership and Administration written by Petra E. Snowden and published by McGraw-Hill Humanities, Social Sciences & World Languages. This book was released on 1998 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text is designed to help prospective and experienced principals, administrators and supervisors increase their knowledge and skills through concepts, case-studies, and simulations. Two parts makeup this text. Part I presents important theoretical concepts and research findings that if adequately understood and appropriately applied can improve educators' problem solving and leadership effectiveness. Problems and issues illustrated in case studies and simulations are presented in Part II. Nevertheless, it is the problem dimension of human behaviour in school administration that should be studied, and it is here that preparation and in-service training programs need to be directed if prospective and experienced administrators and supervisors are to be equipped with the skills needed for the future as well as for the present.
Book Synopsis Evaluation in Decision Making by : Naftaly S. Glasman
Download or read book Evaluation in Decision Making written by Naftaly S. Glasman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the practice of decision making by school principals and about ways to improve this practice by capitalizing on evaluation dimensions. Much has been written on decision making but surprisingly little on decision making in the school principalship. Much has been also written on evaluation as well as on evaluation and decision making, but not much has been written on evaluation in decision making, especially decision making in the principalship. This book presents two messages. One is that decision making in the principalship can be studied and improved and not only talked about in abstract terms. The other message is that evaluation can contribute to the understanding of decision making in the principalship and to the improvement of its practice. In this book we call for the conception of an evaluation-minded principal, a principal who has a wide perspective on the nature of evaluation and its potential benefits, a principal who is also inclined to use evaluation perceptions and techniques as part of his/her decision-making process. This book was conceived in 1985 with the idea to combine thoughts about educational administration with thoughts about educational evaluation. Studies of decision making in the principalship had already been on their way. We decided to await the findings, and in the meantime we wrote a first conceptual version of evaluation in decision making. As the studies were completed we wrote a first empirical version of same.
