Book excerpt: Community college deans and other mid-level academic leaders contribute to institutional processes on several levels and work with many constituencies. Studies have demonstrated that these leaders are expected to possess a wide array of attributes, but typically do not undergo formal training. The literature contains documentation of other levels of community college leadership but is deficient in information regarding dean development. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate and document dean training in a community college that maintained training for mid-level academic leaders. This exploratory sequential case study examined dean training at a nationally recognized community college. Andragogy provided a theoretical lens for analysis and a conceptual lens was provided by the leadership competencies for mid-level academic leaders created by the American Association of Community Colleges. The first qualitive phase included semi-structured interviews with training program contributors and documents related to dean training were analyzed. Training program elements that emerged from interview data informed the development of the survey instrument used during the second phase of the study. Deans at the case study institution were surveyed to capture the perceived importance of including various competencies in a dean training program and value of different training methods. The findings of this study agreed with previous studies that indicated community college deans are expected to understand a wide array of topics. After interview data were consolidated, 68 training competencies and 30 methods emerged as dean training elements. Almost all competencies were perceived as important or somewhat important to include in a dean training program. Classifying competencies as informational, leadership, or procedural revealed that procedural competencies emerged more often, but leadership competencies were perceived as more important. Most training methods were perceived as valuable or somewhat valuable by deans at the institution. Practical applications of this study provide considerations for institutions and organizations interested in developing community college deans and other mid-level academic leaders.

Book excerpt: This two-phase sequential mixed methods exploratory study examined the perceived skill deficits of instructional deans at California community colleges to better understand the training and development needs that are necessary to support dean success and to prepare them for advancement in a timelier manner. This study is grounded in the theoretical framework of social constructivism and system dynamics. The literature indicates a need for competent leaders in the hiring pipeline to fill the predicted vacancies of the baby boomer generation in California community colleges. Despite the ongoing warnings in the literature for the past decade, little has been done to prepare future leaders for the mass exodus of senior administration. Further, given the structured path to senior administration, very little research has been conducted on mid-level administrators despite the critical role that they play in day-to-day college operations and the fact that mid-level administration is the accepted training ground for senior leadership positions. This study focused specifically on instructional deans, who make up a large portion of mid-level administrators. Perceptions were elicited from California community college instructional deans, senior administrators, and faculty. Results indicated that, overall, all three constituency groups interviewed and surveyed generally agreed on the skills required to be an effective instructional dean. However, there were frame gaps in perceptions, based on the position of the respondent, when it came to identifying instructional dean skill deficits, training provided for deans, and support. Additional findings indicated that on-the-job training is the most common form of instructional dean training used by colleges.

This represents a reduction of$809 million in state appropriations. Despite the reduction in funding, the California Master Plan for Higher Education includes provisions for community colleges to develop quality workforce training programs to prepare young and older students with vocational skills that lead to employment. The purpose of this study is to explore workforce training programs in two Southern California community colleges to determine what practitioners are doing to keep training afloat in times of financial difficulty. This research study is investigated through the lens of a human capital theoretical framework, which examines the relationships between economic development, workforce training, and partnerships. This qualitative case study explored the experiences of 14 workforce training practitioners, comprised of community college administrators, directors, managers, and faculty members. and public and private agency and association partners who are responsible for overseeing and delivering workforce training. The findings of this study indicate that due to budget cuts, workforce training practitioners have become more entrepreneurial-minded in delivering, developing, and sustaining their respective training programs. Findings also suggest that participants in this study attribute the support of their leaders, collaborations with partners, and the contributions of their stakeholders to be critical resources that keep workforce training afloat and relevant in the community colleges in which they are associated.

Book excerpt: Many professors come to the college environment with a strong understanding of their discipline but lack teaching skills. To address the issue of faculty development, many colleges use Boyer's Scholarship of Engagement to guide the development of faculty in teaching and learning centers, but little is known about how community colleges develop faculty through the growing use of centralized services. The purpose of this study was to examine how a Teaching and Learning Center at a community college located in the northeast of the United States develops faculty. The qualitative case study included inductive analysis of 11 semi-structured in-depth interviews, observations, field notes, and documents. Observations were conducted on a wide range of offerings of the Center for Teaching and Learning. Participants were purposeively sampled, ring a different college departments, levels and gender. Study results indicated that the CTL develops faculty by aligning with the mission of the college, building relationships by maintaining a visible presence on campus, scannning the environment to meet faculty needs, leveling departmental and hierachical boundaries to promote idea sharing and helping faculty integrate innovations into the classroom. From these findings, three salient conclusions were drawn. First, the director's role and behavior in the CTL is integral for overcoming politicial resistance in fostering faculty development. Second, the CTL promotes sharing best teaching practices across disciplines and levels of hierarchy. Last, the changing nature of technology is a major driving force in faculty development.
