Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyslexia is a disability that exists in all countries that have high expectations for literacy. The inability to read in spite of normal intellectual potential represents one of the most puzzling educational challenges for literate societies, regardless of the culture or language. This book examines medical, psychological, educational, and sociological data from comprehensive case studies of preteen dyslexic children, in order to profile the disability as it occurs in seventeen different nations. Interviews with the children and their parents reveal how children with dyslexia are identified and treated around the world, and provide a look at various perceptions of dyslexia and its challenges. Researchers and practitioners in education, psychology, and health-related professions will find this case book to be an excellent reference. Parents of children with dyslexia will find the advocacy recommendations helpful.

Book excerpt: A highly accessible analysis of US security policy in the post-Cold War era, for both undergraduate and graduate students. It traces the efforts of both the Bush and Clinton administrations to redefine US security strategy, emphasizing the regional as opposed to the global nature of threats to American security interests, and highlights the constraints that the pressing social and economic agenda in the US have placed upon the formulation and conduct of American foreign and defense policies at a time of reduced external threat. Book Synopsis Improving Adult Literacy Instruction by : National Research Council
Download or read book Improving Adult Literacy Instruction written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high level of literacy in both print and digital media is required for negotiating most aspects of 21st-century life, including supporting a family, education, health, civic participation, and competitiveness in the global economy. Yet, more than 90 million U.S. adults lack adequate literacy. Furthermore, only 38 percent of U.S. 12th graders are at or above proficient in reading. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction synthesizes the research on literacy and learning to improve literacy instruction in the United States and to recommend a more systemic approach to research, practice, and policy. The book focuses on individuals ages 16 and older who are not in K-12 education. It identifies factors that affect literacy development in adolescence and adulthood in general, and examines their implications for strengthening literacy instruction for this population. It also discusses technologies for learning that can assist with multiple aspects of teaching, assessment, and accommodations for learning. There is inadequate knowledge about effective instructional practices and a need for better assessment and ongoing monitoring of adult students' proficiencies, weaknesses, instructional environments, and progress, which might guide instructional planning. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction recommends a program of research and innovation to validate, identify the boundaries of, and extend current knowledge to improve instruction for adults and adolescents outside school. The book is a valuable resource for curriculum developers, federal agencies such as the Department of Education, administrators, educators, and funding agencies.

Book Synopsis Students with Specific Spelling Disability by : Michael T. Flaherty
Download or read book Students with Specific Spelling Disability written by Michael T. Flaherty and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to determine potential causes for the reading and spelling discrepancies of 26 middle school students. All were proficient in reading, but non-proficient in spelling, a pattern typical in students with Specific Spelling Disability (SSD). The focus of the study was on linguistic knowledge while encoding and decoding, plus experiential factors. Five research questions were investigated: encoding and decoding patterns, reading proficiency, spelling proficiency, the correlation between reading and spelling performance, and experiential and behavioral factors that influenced the participants' reading and spelling ability. A collective case study methodology was employed. Quantitative data was acquired from an administration of reading (QRI-5, WRMT-III, MAP, WKCE, TCRWP) and spelling assessments (TWS-4, SPELL-2), as well as qualitative data from a guided/semi-structured interview. An analysis of spelling errors indicated that the participants performed more Mental Orthographic Image errors than other linguistic errors. When participant reading miscues were explored, insertions/omissions were the most frequently performed. Word identification data derived from the WRMT-III indicated that only three participants were proficient. Results obtained from the Word Attack test demonstrated even greater difficulty. In addition, other than MAP results, the participants were not entirely proficient on other reading assessments. Spelling data derived from the TWS-4 and SPELL-2 also indicated spelling challenges. Correlational data was additionally inconclusive with only three relationships demonstrating moderate correlation: WRMT-III Word Identification and WKCE, WRMT-III Word Identification and TWS-4, and WRMT-III Basic Skills Cluster and TWS-4. Analysis of the guided/semi-structured interviews revealed an absence of spelling instruction, or ineffective spelling instruction. The results presented a complex portrait of students' encoding and decoding: students were not universally proficient in terms of their comprehension, or word identification ability and were not proficient spellers. The lack of spelling instruction, or the absence of effective spelling instruction, may have contributed to the participants' limited spelling and reading acumen. Thus, unlike previous research results, identifying individuals who truly reflect SSD is non-conclusive.
