Book Synopsis Rare Neurodegenerative Disorders - New Insights by : Liam Chen
Download or read book Rare Neurodegenerative Disorders - New Insights written by Liam Chen and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurodegenerative diseases share the common property of neuronal loss in the higher-order association and limbic cortices or the extrapyramidal and pyramidal motor systems. In addition, oligodendroglia, astrocytes, and microglia have been implicated in fundamental abnormalities of virtually every neurodegenerative disorder. The particular system affected, more importantly the distribution of the pathology, determines the clinical presentation. While the most common dementia and movement disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 pathology, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, have been extensively studied, many less common, even rare neurodegenerative disorders have gained more attention in recent years. This shift in focus is perhaps driven, in part, by the severely underestimated financial costs associated with these diseases, as well as the immense emotional burden they impose on patients and their caregivers. This book presents the most recent developments in rare neurodegenerative disorders. Insights gained from the investigation of pathophysiological mechanisms of these rare disorders may lead to the development of therapeutic strategies for more prevalent neurodegenerative disorders. In addition to highlighting advancements in research, the book discusses the significant challenges faced by researchers and healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating rare diseases. It emphasizes the critical need for continued funding and support for research, which is essential to improving patient outcomes and advancing our understanding of these complex conditions.
Download or read book Food Allergies written by Roua Lajnaf and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about food allergies in scientific journals and in the lay press, but Food Allergies: Processing Technologies for Allergenicity Reduction approaches the issue of food allergies from an industrial processing rather than a clinical perspective. Indeed, industrial food processing technologies can have many beneficial effects to obtain various food products and to preserve foods from physical, chemical and microbiological alterations. However, processing technologies, including thermal and non‐thermal technologies, can also alter the allergenic properties of food proteins. This book provides an authoritative source of information on the relationship between food processing technologies and food allergens with a greater variety of studied allergens including peanuts, tree nuts, cow’s milk, eggs, sesame, lupine, soy, wheat, mustard, mushroom, fish and shellfish, as well as the importance of processing these when producing hypoallergenic foods. Key Features: Presents food allergies with recent advances and statistics concerning prevalence, physiopathologic mechanism, diagnosis and anaphylaxis Discusses food allergies in the food industry and investigates the effect of processing on allergenicity of foods during manufacturing Provides food processing and promising technologies to produce hypoallergenic food with high quality Covers the allergenic effect of different food additives with an investigation of cross‐reaction risks This unique book is an indispensable guide for allergic patients, production managers, scientists and nutritionists within the food industry as well as covering a range of critical topics in this area for all those concerned with understanding and managing food allergies.

Book Synopsis Case Studies in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology by : DeDe Wohlfarth
Download or read book Case Studies in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology written by DeDe Wohlfarth and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Case Studies in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology provides engaging narratives of clients with complex family situations. The answers to important real-world questions are often nuanced, contextual, and tentative. Unlike the idealistic scenarios presented in most textbooks, these case studies contain ethical lapses, clinical mistakes, confusing diagnostic pictures, cultural misunderstandings, unevenly applied evidence-based approaches, and sometimes unhappy endings. The fictional but realistic portrayals of clients help students learn the skills needed to be successful in the mental health field. Critical thinking questions designed to develop objective analysis and evaluation abilities are embedded throughout the cases. These questions can become individual or group assignments for in-person, hybrid, and online formats. The problem-based learning approach challenges readers to create accurate case conceptualizations and evidence-based treatment plans. The cases utilize the International Classification of Diseases and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The current research applied in the cases deepens understanding of the etiology and treatment of these disorders and captures the tremendous progress in the field of psychology in establishing evidence-based treatment. Continuing the book’s tradition of diversity, the third edition includes a paraplegic father, a blind psychologist, Asian American, Black, biracial, Muslim, Latinx, and Native American participants with differing socioeconomic circumstances, immigration statuses, and sexual orientations.

Book Synopsis Ataxia by : Patricia Bozzetto Ambrosi
Download or read book Ataxia written by Patricia Bozzetto Ambrosi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive overview of ataxia, a common neurological disorder that affects all ages. It can manifest in children when they start to sit and walk and under a specific form of genetic disease and in the elderly through falls that worsen with age. In general, ataxia consists of the involuntary lack of coordination of muscle movements, which mainly presents as abnormalities in gait, changes in speech (e. g., scanning speech), and abnormal eye movements such as nystagmus. It results from dysfunction of the nervous system areas responsible for the coordination of movements and, most commonly, the cerebellum and its connections to the cerebrum and periphery. The book is organized into three sections and six chapters that address such topics as genetic conditions, childhood-onset ataxia, ataxia and multiple sclerosis, therapeutic interventions, and more.
