Book Synopsis Reindeer Moon by : Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
Download or read book Reindeer Moon written by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and published by HMH. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A whole culture is imaginatively and authoritatively illuminated” in this “suspenseful, insightful, poignant” novel of prehistoric times (Publishers Weekly). Twenty thousand years ago, a courageous girl lived in Siberia near Woman Lake, a place you won’t find on any modern map. Only thirteen, Yanan and her companions—hunters of deer, gatherers of roots and twigs—struggle to survive the harsh realities of hunger and cold, bound by an unending cycle of birth, kinship, violence, and death. As Yanan recounts the terrible adventures of her brief life, she departs on spirit journeys that evoke the lives of the animals to which she and her people are intimately linked. A lyrical novel of our species’ prehistory, Reindeer Moon opens up corridors to the imagination that lead us back to the long-forgotten echoes of our distant human past. “Unforgettable . . . Reindeer Moon beautifully resurrects a lost world of merciless magnificence. Dozens of memorable characters live and die in this moving tale, which should become a classic.” —Chicago Tribune Book World “Those familiar with the author’s landmark study, The Harmless People, will not be surprised at the range of anthropological information she brings to her first novel, or at the lucidity of her prose. What will astonish, engross and move readers in her narrative of a group of hunter-gatherers who lived 20,000 years ago is the dramatic immediacy of the story and the depth and range of character development.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow Bear from A to Z as he hunts for a cake thief in a hilarious alphabet book crossed with a whodunit. There has been a terrible crime, Bear tells us. Someone has STOLEN a delicious chocolate cake! Bear sets off to find the culprit, questioning characters and compiling clues from A to Z. Among the suspects: a gingerbread man (G) with a bite out of his head, a kite (K) that may be above the law, and an octopus (O) with grabby tentacles. But — hold on — are those crumbs on Bear’s page? Is that frosting on his face? Looks like our narrator is a little unreliable! And it appears our culprit might be the one that Bear wants readers to suspect the least of all. . . . Author Eoin McLaughlin’s sly, cheeky humor takes the alphabet book to inventive new heights, while best-selling illustrator Marc Boutavant’s smart and striking graphic-style art matches the irreverent tone. Young ABC learners and older fans of funny stories will laugh out loud at Bear’s uproarious “investigation” and his anything-but-usual suspects.

Book excerpt: An Anthology of modern short stories. Fiction and non=fiction: A diverse collection of dark stories and travel journals. If you enjoy reading about weird experiences and eccentric perceptions, then Mumbo Jumbo is for you! "Cold crystal particles beautifully shaped and delicately formed into the soft snow or harsh ice of hiking and climbing. This is what the word crystal conjures for me. For others it may be a cure in crystal healing, the devil calling in crystal meth, an expensive cut glass thing or just a pretty stone. Once I even knew a girl called Crystal who had the magic of a piece of crystal rock. Berlin. November 9th 2014. The bar was dimly lit, in fact from the outside it barely looked open...." Crystal Night. "The ceremony was repeated the next night, but this time Miguel bypassed the ritual and clothing and went straight to the point. There were only about six people in the tipi besides Miguel and Fish, and Miguel seemed animated, immediately dishing out the ayahuasca after the tobacco splutter. For some reason he gave me a glass, like a whisky glass but without the shot or two. It was a full glass, I heard him tell Fish in Spanish that it was really strong and Fish physically tried to stop him from giving it to me. Miguel shrugged him off. I ended up drinking the lot. Nothing could have prepared me for what happened next..." Mumbo Jumbo
Book Synopsis Advanced Case Law Methods: A Practical Course by : Richard Cappalli
Download or read book Advanced Case Law Methods: A Practical Course written by Richard Cappalli and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by the author of The American Common Law Method, is an excellent source of continuing judicial education for judges at all levels as well as an accessible teaching tool for the classroom. An opening section explains the basic principles of common law methods for creating and applying case law. Advanced Case Law Method then examines the methods used by appellate courts in four states to create case lines on distinct topics. After each case in each line, the author poses several questions concerning the court's performance as a creator and user of case law. For instance, one chapter traces the "at will" employment doctrine as developed by the New York Court of Appeals and subsequent efforts to create public policy exceptions to the rule. Another looks at the struggle of the appellate courts of Pennsylvania to limit the "intentional infliction of emotional distress" tort doctrine. The New Hampshire group of cases goes back to the mid-18th century and examines railroad liability issues, culminating in the 21st century with duties imposed on internet information providers when the buyer of information causes harm to the seller. The Texas cases treat the "spoliation" doctrine which penalizes a party responsible for causing key evidence to disappear. Following the questions raised by the examined cases, Advanced Case Law Methods includes the suggested responses. The text is then supplemented by a section intended to make the questions and suggested responses a springboard for discussion at seminars, conferences and even classrooms. Judges, therefore, won't have to worry about "doing homework" and getting wrong answers. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.
