Book excerpt: This work concentrates upon families with a strong connection to Virginia and Kentucky, most of which are traced forward from the eighteenth, if not the seventeenth, century. The compiler makes ample use of published sources some extent original records, and the recollections of the oldest living members of a number of the families covered. Finally. The essays reflect a balanced mixture of genealogy and biography, which makes for interesting reading and a substantial number of linkages between as many as six generations of family members.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hughes and Allied Families It was the fortune of one of the compilers of this volume to enjoy largely the society and companionship early in life of cousins in the maternal line. He parted from them in bright, hopeful, buoyant youth, at the very portals of manhood and womanhood, through which none had yet entered to assume the sober cares of life - with some for long years - with others forever. Kindnesses and cousin] y attachment had ripened into the tenderest friendships, and they are remembered with that partial affection which exalting their virtues and their beauties of mind and person, refuses to admit any of their possible faults. The delightful intercourse with them rests in the memory among the brightest scenes in life. A family history which should omit them would fall far short of the object to be aecom plishcd. The following pages are designed to include a complete history of the descendants of Henry F. And Bardwell Hughes, and such account of the Bowen family as lay fairly within reach. Brief notices of other allied families are given for reasons sufficiently manifest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from McCall-Tidwell and Allied Families The establishment Of some of the lines have been extremely difficult. Owing to the destruction by fire during the Revolutionary War and the War Between the States, it has been impossible to collect many names and dates, especially in the Southern States, that would have been of untold value to. This history. In those early days in the South (except in Virginia) there Were few records kept Of the family movements as the country was new and travel very difficult and family association was easily severed on account of the distances apart. And remote facts can only be found in Family Bibles and in the traditions handed down to each succeeding generation. He removed to New Amsterdam and lived there for a time and on his return to Albany was elected a member of the Assembly in 1701; and in 1709 was again elected mayor of Albany. He married April 10, 1694, Catharine, daughter of David Schuyler, who, with his brother Pieterse, came from Amsterdam in 1650, and settled at Fort Orange. Johannes, or John Abeel, eldest son of Christoffel and Margueritta Breese Abeel, was born in Albany, April 8, 1722, and is recorded as an alleged lunatic for the following reasons: He early developed a taste for hunting and finally became a fur trader among the Indians of the Six Nations, with whom he was on terms of intimate friendship, so much so that he became enamoured with an Indian princess, named Aliquipiso, of the Turtle Clan of Seneca Tribe, and married her. Their son, born about 1742, became the famous Corn Plant. The History of Montgomery County, N.Y., pages 218 and 233, contains the following additional facts relating to John Abeel: John Abeel, an Indian trader, settled in the town (Minden), a short distance from Fort Plain, in 1748. He secured several hundred acres of land of one of the grantees of the Blucker patent. In his previous intercourse with the Indians, he had married the daughter of a Seneca chief, the ceremony being performed after the Indian fashion. A child of this mariage was the famous chief, Cornplanter (Corn Plant). Abeel erected a stone dwelling upon a knoll directly above the flats. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Fellows-Craig and Allied Families: From 1619 to 1919 Dedicated to those descendants of the Fellows, Craig and allied families, now living in America, who have helped the writer in so many ways to gather material for this genealogy. We, who are descendants of those pioneer families in America, have a work to do as great as even they had. They, with others of their kind, by their frugality and by the sweat of their brows, laid the foundation of an Utopia in the wilderness. We. their descendants, are to complete that Utopian structure upon their foundation. To do this we must foster the chief traits of those ancestors: frugality and industry. Frugality and industry make men equal; and equality among men is liberty in the fullest sense of the word. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogical History of the French and Allied Families The study of genealogy has been for some years on the increase. Many causes have contributed to this. Among them are the patriotic societies whose membership in part at least depends on descent from revolutionary stock. The increasing tendency to reach for baubles in American society causes many a quest for proof of kinship with those in England who have the right to use insignia by heraldic authority. Not a few engage in the search of family history believing that some where in the East or in Europe is a fortune lying unclaimed awaiting its rightful heir. And then there are those whose traits of mind and special tastes lead to this kind of writing for the mere love of the semi mysterious, ever elusive information, lying just beyond reach, the attainment of which is the goal of an aspiration smaller, though no less sincere, than is that of him who explores uncharted seas and sciences. This beautiful book is due neither to a need for proof of patriot or Pilgrim lineage, to a desire of display, nor to the hope of fame or fortune. Mary Queal Beyer has deeply loved her immediate ancestry. She has even deeper love for her living kin by blood and marriage. She has put her thought in printed fact rather than adulation. In the form of a book she has recited a family record, and challenged her descend ants to measure up to a standard high and firm and fixed in the affairs of home and country.
