Book Synopsis Alternatives in Regulated River Management by : James A. Gore
Download or read book Alternatives in Regulated River Management written by James A. Gore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and managers of regulated river systems will find this volume useful in acquiring information for deciding an integrated management plan for regulated river operations. Rather than the ecological theory of impacts of flow regulation, emphasis has been placed on methods to predict water quality and habitat alterations, as well as techniques to mitigate impacts from various operational scenarios. Although most chapters refer to impacts of riverine impoundments, these alternatives apply to any regulated situation in which changes in water quality or flow pattern occur. The predictive modeling techniques are explained primarily from a theoretical background. However, extensive bibliographies can guide the uninitiated to specific texts and software. Where controversial techniques have been presented, alternate methods are also described. Major topic areas include water quality problems, channel modification and management, ecological modeling and management, as well as a section on perspectives for ecological management and special problems in developing nations.
Book Synopsis Tropical and Sub-Tropical Reservoir Limnology in China by : Bo-Ping Han
Download or read book Tropical and Sub-Tropical Reservoir Limnology in China written by Bo-Ping Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reservoirs are specific aquatic ecosystems and have complex behaviors of both natural lakes and rivers, regulated significantly by their functions such as flood controlling, hydropower generation, irrigation and fishery. This volume offers a general description of reservoir limnology in tropical and subtropical China. It functions as a window opening to all the aquatic scientists with a main focus on reservoirs in southern China and at the same time also covering several important, large reservoirs such as the Three Gorge Reservoir and Danjiangko Reservoir. Topics discussed are zooplankton, phytoplankton and zoobenthos communities, cyanobateria, nutrient budget, sediments, biogeochemical cycling of mercury, fishery and eutrophication.
Book Synopsis Comparative Reservoir Limnology and Water Quality Management by : M. Straskraba
Download or read book Comparative Reservoir Limnology and Water Quality Management written by M. Straskraba and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume starts with comparative reservoir limnology and deals with problems relating to tropical, semi-arid and temperate reservoirs. The second part concerns mathematical models of reservoirs, including new techniques for investigating their limnology. These cover physical, chemical and biological phenomena, remote sensing and the use of modelling to establish the most efficient strategy for water quality sampling. In the third, on reservoir water quality management, the potential available in fish population management for biomanipulation of reservoir water quality is introduced. Also included is a valuable section on a wide range of water quality measures, coming from the well-known Czech Hydrobiological Laboratory. Finally the editors summarise the present state of reservoir limnology. This book will be of interest to hydrobiologists and aquatic ecologists, reservoir and sanitary engineers, fisheries officers, postgraduate teaching, and the water industry dealing with drinking water supply and will provide insight into regulated rivers. It draws information from all over the world and is relevant to the whole world.

Book Synopsis The Lake Charr Salvelinus namaycush: Biology, Ecology, Distribution, and Management by : Andrew M. Muir
Download or read book The Lake Charr Salvelinus namaycush: Biology, Ecology, Distribution, and Management written by Andrew M. Muir and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lake charr Salvelinus namaycush is a ubiquitous member of cold-water lake ecosystems in previously glaciated regions of northern continental U.S., Alaska, and Canada that often support important commercial, recreational, and subsistence fisheries. The lake charr differs from other charrs by its large size, longevity, iteroparity, top-predator specialization, reduced sexual dimorphism, prevalence of lacustrine spawning, and use of deepwater habitat. The species is remarkably variable in phenotype, physiology, and life history, some of which is reflected in its ecology and genetics, with as many as four morphs or ecotypes co-occurring in a single lake. The lake charr is often the top predator in these systems, but is highly adaptable trophically, and is frequently planktivorous in small lakes. The lake charr by their name highlights their common habitat, lakes both large and small, but often frequents rivers and occasionally moves into the Arctic Ocean. Movement and behaviour of lake charr are motivated by access to cool, well-oxygenated water, foraging opportunities, predator avoidance, and reproduction. Owing to their broad distribution and trophic level, the lake charr serves as a sentinel of anthropogenic change. This volume will provide an up-to-date summary of what is currently known about lake charr from distribution to genetics to physiology to ecology. The book provides a compilation and synthesis of available information on the lake charr, beginning with an updated distribution and a revised treatment of the paleoecology of the species. Understanding of ecological and genetic diversity and movement and behaviour of the species has advanced remarkably since the last major synthesis on the species over 40 years ago. Mid-sections of the book provide detailed accounts of the biology and life history of the species, and later sections are devoted to threats to conservation and fishery management practices used to ensure sustainability. A new standard lake charr-specific terminology is also presented. The book will be a valuable reference text for biologists around the world, ecologists, and fishery managers, and of interest to the angling public.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Management of Tropical Catchments by : David Harper
Download or read book Sustainable Management of Tropical Catchments written by David Harper and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1999-03-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides syntheses of studies in three continents on the problem ofachieving and understanding tropical rural development withoutcompromising longer-term sustainability of the soil and watersystems that underpin it. The studies were carried out in Central/South America, Africa andAsia during the 1990s, mostly through the support of the EU Scienceand Technology for Development Programme. The studies encompassexamples of erosion measurement:; of erosion control andconservation techniques at soil and ecosystem levels; of the limitsto uses of fragile tropical soils; of the effects of runoffcombined with regulation on rivers and reservoirs; of theimportance of indigenous people in the development processes and ofthe value and limitations of modelling at scales from soils tocatchment. There is no single message from the book because thereis no single solution to the problems of achieving sustainabletropical development. This book presents ideas, techniques and case studies, knowledge ofwhich will help researchers in many scientific and socialdisciplines to understand the complexities better, and politiciansand bureaucrats to understand the consequences of developmentdecisions and learn from the failure of many earlier ones.
