Book Synopsis Figuring Women by : Susan Amatangelo
Download or read book Figuring Women written by Susan Amatangelo and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The fact that Verga's most rebellious heroines die violently at the hands of men has led to accusations of misogyny or, at the very least, of excessive social and artistic conventionality. Yet it is precisely Verga's awareness of convention that enriches his portrayal of women. The reaction of his female characters to social custom at a particular moment in their lives defines them as individuals. With rare insight, Verga depicts the female experience as both personal and universal, showing that different kinds of women are linked by the experience of being female in a male-centered culture. At the same time, however, he reveals the isolation in which women grow and live, separated from men and other women by social and cultural barriers."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Cavalleria Rusticana and Other Stories by : Giovanni Verga
Download or read book Cavalleria Rusticana and Other Stories written by Giovanni Verga and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) are wonderful evocations of ordinary Italian life, focusing in particular on his native Sicily. In an original and dynamic prose style, he portrays such eternal human themes as love, honour and adultery with rich and colourful language. The inspiration for Mascagni's opera, 'Cavalleria Rusticana' depicts a young man's triumphal return home from the army, spoilt when he learns that his beloved is engaged to another man. Verga's acute awareness of the hardships and aspirations of peasant life can be seen in stories such as 'Nedda', 'Picturesque Lives' and 'Black Bread', while others such as 'The Reverend' and 'Don Licciu Papa' show the dominance of the church and the law in the Sicilian communities he portrays so vividly.
Book Synopsis Literary Diseases by : Gian-Paolo Biasin
Download or read book Literary Diseases written by Gian-Paolo Biasin and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disease—real or imagined, physical or mental—is a common theme in Western literature and is often a symbol of modern alienation. In Literary Diseases, a comprehensive analysis of the metaphorical and symbolic force of disease in modern Italian literature, Gian-Paolo Biasin expands the geography of the discussion of this important theme. Using as a backdrop the perspective of European experiences of the previous hundred years, Biasin analyzes the theme of disease as a reflection of certain sociological and historical phenomena in modern European novels, as a metaphor for the world visions of selected Italian novelists, and especially as a vehicle for understanding the nature and function of fiction itself. The core of Biasin’s study is found in his discussion of the works of four major Italian writers. In his criticism of the novels of Giovanni Verga, who stood at the center of many complex developments in the nineteenth century, he examines the antecedents of modern Italian prose. He then scrutinizes the works of Italo Svevo and Luigi Pirandello, who together inaugurated the modern novel in Italy. Of particular interest is his exploration of their critical use of psychoanalysis and madness climaxed by apocalyptic visions. He then discusses the prose of Carlo Emilio Gadda, which epitomizes the problems of the avant-garde in its experimentalism and expressionism. Biasin utilizes a broad spectrum of critical approaches—from sociology, psychoanalysis, and different trends in modern French, American, and Italian literary criticism—in shaping his own methodology, which is a thematic and structural symbolism. He concludes that disease in literature should be considered as a metaphor for writing (écriture) and as a cognitive instrument that calls into question the anthropocentric values of Western culture. The book, with its textual comparisons and unusual supporting examples, constitutes a significant methodological contribution as well as a major survey of modern Italian prose, and will allow the reader to see traditional landmarks in European fiction in a new light.
Book Synopsis Postal Culture by : Gabriella Romani
Download or read book Postal Culture written by Gabriella Romani and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nationalization of the postal service in Italy transformed post-unification letter writing as a cultural medium. Both a harbinger of progress and an expanded, more efficient means of circulating information, the national postal service served as a bridge between the private world of personal communication and the public arena of information exchange and production of public opinion. As a growing number of people read and wrote letters, they became part of a larger community that regarded the letter not only as an important channel in the process of information exchange, but also as a necessary instrument in the education and modernization of the nation. In Postal Culture, Gabriella Romani examines the role of the letter in Italian literature, cultural production, communication, and politics. She argues that the reading and writing of letters, along with epistolary fiction, epistolary manuals, and correspondence published in newspapers, fostered a sense of community and national identity and thus became a force for social change.
Book Synopsis Sicily on Screen by : Giovanna Summerfield
Download or read book Sicily on Screen written by Giovanna Summerfield and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its physical beauty and kaleidoscopic cultural background, Sicily has long been a source of inspiration for filmmakers. Twelve new essays by international scholars--and additional writings from directors Roberta Torre, Giovanna Taviani, and Costanza Quatriglio--seek to offset the near-absence of scholarship focusing on the relationship between the Mediterranean island and cinema. Touching on class relations, immigration, gender and poverty, the essays examine how Sicily is depicted in fiction, satire and documentaries. Situated between North and South, East and West, innovation and tradition, authenticity and displacement, Sicily acts as a microcosm of the world, a place to explore numerous narratives and develop intercultural dialogue. It is also the center of cinematographic discussions and events such as the Taormina Film Festival and the SalinaDocFest. The volume presents Sicily almost as a character and creator in its own right.

Book Synopsis Eleonora Duse and Cenere (Ashes) by : Maria Pia Pagani
Download or read book Eleonora Duse and Cenere (Ashes) written by Maria Pia Pagani and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1916 silent film Cenere (Ashes) features the great Italian actress Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) in her only cinematic role. In her meditative approach to her craft, she reprised for the screen all the "mother roles" she had created for the theater. Marking the film's 100th anniversary, this collection of essays brings together for the first time in English a range of scholarship. The difficulties involved in the making of the film are explored--Duse's perfectionism was too advanced for the Italian movie industry of the 1910s. Her work is discussed within the creative, political and historical context of the silent movie industry as it developed in wartime Italy.
