When night falls, she learns that there's more to them than meets the eye... Jasmine has always been drawn to medieval castles, even though she was raised in the American Midwest. She's thrilled when she comes upon Scotland's fabled Invercreutch Castle, hidden deep in Argyll Forest. Three stone gargoyles atop the castle, in the shapes of a dog, a snake, and an eagle, are eerily lifelike. When darkness falls, the statues shift from their gargoyle forms into their human shapes. Jasmine is terrified at first, but quickly sees that only passionate pleasure awaits her at Invercreutch. Through the long night that follows, Jasmine learns that her arrival is no accident. She also discovers that creatures of stone can be hot-blooded, hungry, and full of life. Persuaded by the seductive embraces of Feargus, Niall, and Maeve, Jasmine begins to sense her true place in the world. She remembers that she is an intergral part of the magickal history of Invercreutch. Jasmine now has a choice to make—does her heart belong in the bright daylight world of today or in the timeless moonlight magick of Argyll Forest?

All my life I knew I'd come of age during the Hundred Year Reaping. According to the ridiculous treaty, two human girls are sent to the faelands as brides for the fearsome fae king and his devilish younger brother. Not me. I was supposed to be safe. Two girls were chosen from my village already. But when they are executed for offending the king, my sister and I are sent in their place. What a mess. Then again, maybe it's not so bad. The younger brother I'm paired with doesn't seem as monstrous as I'd expected. He's delightfully handsome too. But nothing compares to the chilling, dangerous beauty of the fae king. And when my sister flees the castle and her terrifying husband-to-be, I'm left to marry him instead. If I go through with this, I might not survive my wedding night. If I don't, no one is safe, neither human nor fae. An ancient war will return, bringing devastation we haven't seen in a thousand years. Can I sacrifice myself for the good of my people? Or will a dangerous desire be the death of me first? If I don't lose my heart, the king will certainly lose his. I'll carve it out with an iron blade if I have to. Book Synopsis The Scars We Carve by : Allison M. Johnson
Download or read book The Scars We Carve written by Allison M. Johnson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Scars We Carve: Bodies and Wounds in Civil War Print Culture, Allison M. Johnson considers the ubiquitous images of bodies—white and black, male and female, soldier and civilian—that appear throughout newspapers, lithographs, poems, and other texts circulated during and in the decades immediately following the Civil War. Rather than dwelling on the work of well-known authors, The Scars We Carve uncovers a powerful archive of Civil War–era print culture in which the individual body and its component parts, marked by violence or imbued with rhetorical power, testify to the horrors of war and the lasting impact of the internecine conflict. The Civil War brought about vast changes to the nation’s political, social, racial, and gender identities, and Johnson argues that print culture conveyed these changes to readers through depictions of nonnormative bodies. She focuses on images portrayed in the pages of newspapers and journals, in the left-handed writing of recent amputees who participated in penmanship contests, and in the accounts of anonymous poets and storytellers. Johnson reveals how allegories of the feminine body as a representation of liberty and the nation carved out a place for women in public and political realms, while depictions of slaves and black soldiers justified black manhood and citizenship in the midst of sectional crisis. By highlighting the extent to which the violence of the conflict marked the physical experience of American citizens, as well as the geographic and symbolic bodies of the republic, The Scars We Carve diverges from narratives of the Civil War that stress ideological abstraction, showing instead that the era’s print culture contains a literary and visual record of the war that is embodied and individualized.

Praise: Named a Best Debut of 2013 by Suspense Magazine "Prepare to be overwhelmed by the tension and moodiness that permeates this edgy thriller. As Kathryn delves she discovers that she is not the only one whose habitual assumptions about life have been torn asunder by an apparent experience of the miraculous in relation to the mystery woman.
