Book Synopsis Access to International Justice by : Patrick Keyzer
Download or read book Access to International Justice written by Patrick Keyzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much debate about the scope of international law, its compatibility with individual state practice, its enforceability and the recent and limited degree to which it is institutionalized. This collection of essays seeks to address the issue of access to justice, the related element of domestic rule of law which does not yet figure significantly in debates about international rule of law. Even in cases in which laws are passed, institutions are present and key players are ethically committed to the rule of law, those whom the laws are intended to protect may be unable to secure protection. This is an issue in most domestic jurisdictions but also one which poses severe problems for international justice worldwide. The book will be of interest to academics and practitioners of international law, environmental law, transitional justice, international development, human rights, ethics, international relations and political theory.

Book Synopsis The Twilight of American Culture by : Morris Berman
Download or read book The Twilight of American Culture written by Morris Berman and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2001-06-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An emerging cult classic about America's cultural meltdown—and a surprising solution. A prophetic examination of Western decline, The Twilight of American Culture provides one of the most caustic and surprising portraits of American society to date. Whether examining the corruption at the heart of modern politics, the "Rambification" of popular entertainment, or the collapse of our school systems, Morris Berman suspects that there is little we can do as a society to arrest the onset of corporate Mass Mind culture. Citing writers as diverse as de Toqueville and DeLillo, he cogently argues that cultural preservation is a matter of individual conscience, and discusses how classical learning might triumph over political correctness with the rise of a "a new monastic individual"—a person who, much like the medieval monk, is willing to retreat from conventional society in order to preserve its literary and historical treasures. "Brilliantly observant, deeply thoughtful ....lucidly argued."—Christian Science Monitor

Book Synopsis The Writer in the Landscape by : Mary Ruth Strzeszewski
Download or read book The Writer in the Landscape written by Mary Ruth Strzeszewski and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the intellectual emerged in Spain in the second half of the nineteenth century, and Azorín (José Martínez Ruiz) and Miguel de Unamuno explored the critical and creative possibilities of this new role in their writings. This comparative study of these authors' prose writings on landscape focuses on the literary personae of the artist-intellectual that both Azorín and Unamuno cultivated and on their innovative use of the article form. The principal body of the study is dedicated to each author's extension of the narrative of literary self-creation beyond the boundaries of the novel in the flexible, literary form of the article, Strzeszewski's reading of these sui generis writings should contribute to a greater appreciation of their innovative character.

Book Synopsis Myth and Meaning by : Edith Moss Jackson
Download or read book Myth and Meaning written by Edith Moss Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the three authors studied, Ana María Matute, Carmen Martín Gaite, and Esther Tusquets, are sophisticated intellectuals, they have chosen fairy tales and texts from other marginalized genres originally for female consumption (such as the novela rosa and the Hollywood women's picture) as the major intertexts in their novels for adults as well as in their fictions for children. Against the backdrop feminist theory and recent critical studies of fairy tales and children's literature, Soliño studies the works of these authors as "gendered texts." Soliño's book opens with a chapter that traces the historical development of the fairy tale genre, examines their didactic intent, and critiques the images of women in fairy tales. The second chapter explores the manners by which fairy tales were used as a tool for indoctrination during the formative years of the three authors under consideration. These introductory chapters are followed by individual chapters devoted to Martín Gaite, Matute, and Tusquets in which Soliño explores the connections between the literature these authors published for children and the novels they penned for an adult readership.
