Book Synopsis Evolution of the Automobile Industry by : Takahiro Fujimoto
Download or read book Evolution of the Automobile Industry written by Takahiro Fujimoto and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element applies capability-architecture-performance (CAP) approach of industrial analysis to the evolution of the automobile industry and the strategies of its leading manufacturing firms between the late 19th century and the early 21st century. It regards a manufacturing site ('genba,' such as factory, development facility, etc.) and a product (and other economic artifacts, such as processes) as the two basic units of analysis. Both an industry and a firm can be seen as a collection of sites, as well as a collection of products. The CAP framework predicts that dynamic fits between the sites' organizational capabilities and the product/process architectures lead to sustainable competitive performance. Such key concepts as flows of value-carrying design information, productive/market/profit performance, design-based comparative advantage, integral/modular architectures, multi-skilling, coordinative capability-building, evolutionary capabilities, industry lifecycle, and architectural evolution are discussed in a systematic and dynamic way.

Book excerpt: One of the most important transformations in the world today is the adaptation to education and teaching methods that must be made to enhance the learning experience for Millennial and Generation Z students. The system in which the student is passive and the teacher is active is no longer the most effective form of education. Additionally, with the increased availability to information, knowledge transfer is no longer done solely by the teacher. Educators need to become moderators in order to promote effective teaching practices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out a road map for the provision of urban access for all. For most of the last century cities have followed a path of dependency on car dominated urban transport favouring the middle classes. Urban Access for the 21st Century seeks to change this. Policies need to be more inclusive of the accessibility needs of the urban poor. Change requires redesigning the existing public finance systems that support urban mobility. The aim is to diminish their embedded biases towards automobile-based travel. Through a series of chapters from international contributors, the book brings together expertise from different fields. It shows how small changes can incentivize large positive developments in urban transport and create truly accessible cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the war ended on August IS, 1945, I was a naval engineering cadet at the Kure Navy Yard near Hiroshima, Japan. A week later, I was demobi lized and returned to my home in Tokyo, fortunate not to find it ravaged by firebombing. At the beginning of September, a large contingent of the Ameri can occupation forces led by General Douglas MacArthur moved its base from Yokohama to Tokyo. Near my home I watched a procession of American mili tary motor vehicles snaking along Highway 1. This truly awe-inspiring cavalcade included jeeps, two-and-a-half-ton trucks, and enormous trailers mounted with tanks and artillery. At the time, I was a 21-year-old student in the Machinery Section of Engineering at the Tokyo Imperial University. Watching that mag nificent parade of military vehicles, I was more than impressed by the gap in industrial strength between Japan and the U. S. That realization led me to devote my whole life to the development of the Japanese auto industry. I wrote a small article concerning this incident in Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun (one of the leading business newspapers in Japan) on May 2, 1983. The English translation of this story was carried in the July 3, 1983 edition of the Topeka Capital-Journal and the September 13, 1983 issue of the Asian Wall Street Journal. The Topeka Capital-Journal headline read, "MacArthur's Jeeps Were the Toyota Catalyst.

Book excerpt: As China continues to ride out the global economic crisis while still retaining year on year GDP growth it is increasingly important to understand how this 'new' economic giant, with its communist-capitalist model operates its economic and business environments. This book is designed to scientifically examine the contextual variables that foster sustainably dynamic economic growth in China. In particular, the contributors provide an incisive analysis of the contextual bases underlying such a dramatic rising economic power and the immense implications for enterprises and countries involved in dealing with China. As such it will be essential reading for all students of Chinese business and economics, as well as businesses seeking to develop a critical understanding of the driving global economic force which is China.
