Book excerpt: In recent years, New Historicists have situated the iconoclasm of Milton’s poetry and prose within the context of political, cultural, and philosophical discourses that foreshadow early modernism. In Carnal Rhetoric, Lana Cable carries these investigations further by exploring the iconoclastic impulse in Milton’s works through detailed analyses of his use of metaphor. Building on a provocative iconoclastic theory of metaphor, she breaks new ground in the area of affective stylistics, not only as it pertains to the writings of Milton but also to all expressive language. Cable traces the development of Milton’s iconoclastic poetics from its roots in the antiprelatical tracts, through the divorce tracts and Areopagitica, to its fullest dramatic representation in Eikonoklastes and Samson Agonistes. Arguing that, like every creative act, metaphor is by nature a radical and self-transgressing agent of change, she explores the site where metaphoric language and imaginative desire merge. Examining the demands Milton places on metaphor, particularly his emphasis on language as a vehicle for mortal redemption, Cable demonstrates the ways in which metaphor acts for him as that creative and radical agent of change. In the process, she reveals Milton’s engagement, at the deepest levels of linguistic creativity, with the early modern commitment to an imaginative and historic remaking of the world. An insightful and synthetic book, Carnal Rhetoric will appeal to scholars of English literature, Milton, and the Renaissance, as well as to those with an interest in the theory of affective stylistics as it pertains to reader-response criticism, semantics, epistemology, and the philosophy and psychology of language.

It examines works from the first fifteen years of Augustine's Christian life in order to follow the course of his development. His reflections on the craft of hermeneutics advanced not only specifically theological reading practices but also the humane art of textual interpretation. Augustine's rationale for figurative reading in the tens of thousands of Scripture references that filled hundreds of sermons, letters, and treatises made him the most widely read commentator on the Christian Scriptures in the west for more than a thousand years.

She has been on radio and in magazines continuously since 1991, and is a much-loved personality whose escapades and down-to-earth advice to others have fascinated and entertained listeners for many years. With empathy and self-deprecation, plus a world of experience, she hopes to make you feel better about your own misadventures and by way of her unfortunate experiments with life she might even prevent you from going through some of the same things. If nothing else, you will get some great yarns from someone who apparently has resilience and experience, but more likely bad eyesight, an open mind, and a warm heart. After her ex is found murdered, Nora chases the scent all the way from Los Angeles to Tulsa to find some right angles in this nasty business, only to be waylaid by a gorgeous, gin-swilling skirt who has information as well as an appetite for women like Nora. Ive poured my heart into this book! Although POETICALLY SPOKEN WORD is a collection of poetry pieces, it could also very well be my autobiography. Each piece precisely reflects my character, personality and beliefs. There is a level of transparency contained in these writings that almost forces you to become as one with the author. I believe transparency is paramount when attempting to reach others by means of testimony combined with poetical prose. While reading this book, youll personally travel with me from the devilish depths and despair of active alcohol and drug addictions with all of its atrocities, all the way to a place of unutterable joy and gratitude positioned inside the veil and face-to-face with The Father and The Son with The Holy Spirit being your guide. I pray this book draws you closer to the majestic favor, graces, and redemptive powers of a life lived in Salvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Flynn has written the best SF in the tradition of Robert A. Heinlein of the last decade. His major work was the Firestar sequence, a four-book future history. "As Robert A. Heinlein did and all too few have done since, Michael Flynn writes about the near future as if he'd been there and was bringing back reports of what he'd seen," said Harry Turtledove. Now, in this sweeping stand-alone epic of the spaceways, Flynn grows again in stature, with an SF novel worthy of the master himself. Indeed, if Heinlein's famous character, the space-faring poet Rhysling, had ever written a novel, this would be it. This is a compelling tale of the glory that was. In the days of the great sailing ships, in the mid-twenty-first century, when magnetic sails drew cargo and passengers alike to every corner of the solar system, sailors had the highest status of all spacemen, and the crew of the luxury liner the River of Stars, the highest among all sailors. But development of the Farnsworth fusion drive doomed the sailing ships, and now the River of Stars is the last of its kind, retrofitted with engines, her mast vestigial, her sails unraised for years. An ungainly hybrid, she operates in the late years of the century as a mere tramp freighter among the outer planets, and her crew is a motley group of misfits. Stepan Gorgas is the escapist executive officer who becomes captain. Ramakrishnan Bhatterji is the chief engineer who disdains him. Eugenie Satterwaithe, once a captain herself, is third officer and, for form's sake, sailing master. When an unlikely and catastrophic engine failure strikes the River, Bhatterji is confident he can effect repairs with heroic engineering, but Satterwaithe and the other sailors among the crew plot to save her with a glorious last gasp for the old ways, mesmerized by a vision of arriving at Jupiter proudly under sail. The story of their doom has the power, the poetry, and the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. This is a great science fiction novel, Flynn's best yet. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday countless numbers of believers experience crisis that tests their faith. Once thrust into the storm, the sifting begins, and we must make a choice to stand on truth. To complicate the matter, we may respond in sin and continue in error by pointing the blame on others. After our faith falters through a trial, we may abandon it and suffer the stigma of what the Apostle Paul called, a shipwrecked faith. Not understanding why this happens to loyal believers, who once felt so close to God, we turn away from our faith. Like spiritual nomads, we leave the congregation, fleeing for refuge in a desert of our own making. What we may not comprehend, or appreciate is that Gods grace sustains us during our season of separation. This book helps the reader to regain stability during a stretch in the desert and see it as an opportunity for refining and redefining our faith. Alternatively, faith failure occurs when a believer naively misplaces faith to truth in a system of religious works, or persons and suffers when they do not uphold the teachings of Jesus. When we walk from false religious teachings, associates label us as failures and reject us. Broken hearted and disillusioned by our situation, we give up our religion and turn our back on everything we once believed in. We may spend years hiding in the desert making little progress in our faith, until we realize that we are spiritually thirsty. We long for Gods love and wish someone would help us find the way to restore our faith. Our cry is like the title of this book, Help Me! Im a Religious Wreck and You Can Find Me in the Desert and here it is with care, placed into your hands, from one who understands the cry.
