Book Synopsis Gold Rush Orphan by : Sandy Frances Duncan
Download or read book Gold Rush Orphan written by Sandy Frances Duncan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gold Rush Orphan Sandy Frances Duncan has woven a fascinating tale of hardship and adventure based on her grandfather's gold rush journal entries of his 1898 trip to the Klondike. The arduous trek to the goldfields comes alive in the fictionalized story of Jeremy Britain, a young teen who joins James Fraser and his companions to search for the gold that would make their fortunes. Duncan begins the story in the gold rush port of Skagway where Jeremy has a run-in with the infamous Soapy Smith and his gang. The cruelties and lawlessness of life on the streets of Skagway merge with the implacable storms of winter as Jeremy struggles with the rest of his crew to climb the White Pass, not once but many times, in order to carry all the supplies needed to survive in the wilderness. It is a never-to-be-forgotten trip as Jeremy and the men struggle to care for the horses and dogs carrying the crew's supplies through deep snow and freezing temperatures. Once spring breakup arrives, there is the new challenge of navigating the swollen rivers on home-made rafts and boats. When Jeremy's group unexpectedly veers away from the usual route to Dawson and the Klondike to venture into uncharted lands, Jeremy begins furiously panning the streams they cross as they follow a mysterious account that promises the motherlode.

Book Synopsis Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Volume One: Summary by : Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
Download or read book Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Volume One: Summary written by Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Final Report of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its six-year investigation of the residential school system for Aboriginal youth and the legacy of these schools. This report, the summary volume, includes the history of residential schools, the legacy of that school system, and the full text of the Commission's 94 recommendations for action to address that legacy. This report lays bare a part of Canada's history that until recently was little-known to most non-Aboriginal Canadians. The Commission discusses the logic of the colonization of Canada's territories, and why and how policy and practice developed to end the existence of distinct societies of Aboriginal peoples. Using brief excerpts from the powerful testimony heard from Survivors, this report documents the residential school system which forced children into institutions where they were forbidden to speak their language, required to discard their clothing in favour of institutional wear, given inadequate food, housed in inferior and fire-prone buildings, required to work when they should have been studying, and subjected to emotional, psychological and often physical abuse. In this setting, cruel punishments were all too common, as was sexual abuse. More than 30,000 Survivors have been compensated financially by the Government of Canada for their experiences in residential schools, but the legacy of this experience is ongoing today. This report explains the links to high rates of Aboriginal children being taken from their families, abuse of drugs and alcohol, and high rates of suicide. The report documents the drastic decline in the presence of Aboriginal languages, even as Survivors and others work to maintain their distinctive cultures, traditions, and governance. The report offers 94 calls to action on the part of governments, churches, public institutions and non-Aboriginal Canadians as a path to meaningful reconciliation of Canada today with Aboriginal citizens. Even though the historical experience of residential schools constituted an act of cultural genocide by Canadian government authorities, the United Nation's declaration of the rights of aboriginal peoples and the specific recommendations of the Commission offer a path to move from apology for these events to true reconciliation that can be embraced by all Canadians.

Download or read book Pattern Makers written by Frances Duncan and published by Women's Press (UK). This book was released on 1989 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pattern Makers, the surreal journey of three women and a spider, is equally "fantastical, epic and allegorical." Yvonne first moves into her refrigerator in her own short story in Baker's Dozen: Short Stoies by Women. For some time she has been content if not cramped decorating and furnishing her fridge, passing out food to her family on request. Pattern Makers begins when Yvonne's refrigerator turns to sand. With only her own unexplored powers, not even a map or credit card, Yvonne is forced to face new territory and herself. Through a fantasy that never forgets how much women give up of themselves, Duncan weaves an incredible saga of women's journeys toward healing and wholeness. She never strays from the double-edged wit that makes Pattern Makers a thought-provoking and entertaining story of transformation.
