Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop a profile of female community college presidents by examining their personal characteristics, career paths, mentorship, and professional development. The participants in this study were female community college presidents whose institutions were members of the Association of Community College Trustees. Quantitative data were gathered and analyzed to obtain a demographic profile and provided an update to the research findings of two similar studies about female college presidents and their ascension to presidencies. The results of this study suggested that participants had mentors who influenced their career paths to become presidents. Furthermore, an analysis of the data revealed that participating in professional development activities provided additional skills and opportunities that helped the participants become presidents. Finally, the data suggested that following the traditional career path of faculty member, dean, chief academic officer, and then president was not necessary to become a president. These findings were compared to similar studies. This study adds to the body of literature that examines women in leadership at community colleges. of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy The problem examined in this study was the phenomena of disproportionate suspension of African American males in urban high schools. In order to evaluate this phenomenon, a cultural lens was used to understand the experiences that led to suspension of African American males at True Urban High School. Research participants recounted (in their own voices) the suspension experience from precipitating event(s) to culmination. Further, the researcher examined the degree to which teachers' level of cultural proficiency played a role in the imposition of suspension on these students. In order to understand the suspension experiences, a qualitative research design was employed. Survey data from seven African American male participants (four of the seven were purposefully selected for individual interview sessions) and two teachers were analyzed in the completion of this research. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Seventeen percent of American college and university presidents are classified as a member of a minority racial or ethnic group; African American/Black college and university presidents only make of eight percent of those leaders (American Council on Education, 2017). Recently, historically, white liberal arts colleges (HWLACs) have been leading the charge in diversifying the American college presidency, with at least five new presidents who identify as African American/Black since 2013 (Lewis, 2016). A handful more of African American/Black presidents at HWLACs have since been added and it is important that the stories of current African American/Black college presidents be told in order influence and support future leaders. This study explores the career pathways of eight African American/Black presidents who lead (or have lead) HWLACs. Through their experiences, they offer a glimpse into their rise to the position of president at their respective institutions and the impact race has had on their abilities to lead. Most of the presidents had considerable experience as academicians prior to their appointments while others were prepared through leadership in industry before moving into higher education. Each of the participants held the distinction of being the first of their race to be named president at their respective institution; and some actually, became presidents at more than one institution. Furthermore, the presidents consider their position as a call to service and assume a responsibility to influence future diversity in higher education leadership. Each president's story presents opportunities that can be used to help prepare future leaders through professional development, mentoring relationships, and the improvement of doctoral (and terminal) degree programs.

Book excerpt: This ex post facto research was conducted using parametric and non-parametric analysis to determine if the mass retirement of community college presidents between 2001 and 2007 had precipitated a diminution in educational qualifications, a reduction in pre-presidential community college experience, or a change in presidential career paths of first time community college presidents by era (before and after 2001). Seven hundred eighty-five currently serving presidents of comprehensive community colleges were surveyed. The overall return rate of the survey was 53.25%: the useable return rate was 49.30%. Parametric (independent samples t-test) and non-parametric (Mann-Whitney and chi square) tests were used to determine if there were significant differences in educational qualifications, pre-presidential community college experience, and presidential career paths of first time community college presidents by era (before and after 2001). The study found: - A diminution of the educational qualifications after 2001 with fewer presidents holding doctorates at the time of their first presidential appointments compared to presidents appointed before 2001; - A significant increase in pre-presidential community college experience of presidents appointed after 2001 at the time of their first presidential appointments compared to presidents appointed before 2001; - A significant difference in presidential career paths by era. Specifically, presidents appointed after 2001 were significantly less likely to have entered the community college system from K12 or from non-educational management positions. Presidents appointed after 2001 were also significantly less likely to have served as a community college Chief Academic Officer and significantly more likely to have served as a community college Primary Academic Officer, Chief Students Affairs Officer, or Vice President.

Book excerpt: Purpose The purpose of this qualitative study was two-fold: (a) to determine the barriers women encounter as they pursue becoming a community college president; and (b) to identify the supports and career paths that are described as assisting women in obtaining the position of community college president. More specifically, emergent themes regarding the career paths, barriers and obstacles related to female presidents’ professional roles and responsibilities, and their strategies for success were sought in this study. This study is informative and inspirational to other women within the community college system who aspire to presidency positions as well as those who serve in leadership roles in all types of institutions. It is believed that the information that is gathered and shared will be used to inspire and assist women to continue along the path to become community college presidents. Method A phenomenological research design was used to explore participants’ experiences in Texas. The process was meant to explore the phenomenon related to the experiences of female presidents. Data were collected through individual face-to face and phone interviews. A qualitative method of analysis was used to analyze the data collected around the experiences of the presidents as described to the researcher by the participants. Findings from this study were explanations of experiences of community college presidents as they related to their own unique career pathways. Results included barriers and supports that the women encountered along the way, as well as the career paths they followed. Although every woman who participated in this study had a unique journey to and experience in the presidency, several similarities or themes were identified that bind these women together. Aspiring women presidents need to be more open minded about relocating, sometimes out of state, to move into a college presidency. Although not always easy for some women, particularly those women who are part of dual career marriages, or who have children who have not yet graduated from high school, more women need to become open minded about the possibility of relocating if they are to attain the office of presidency. Book excerpt: Since their early days, community colleges have maintained a pivotal role as a provider of education to the diverse populations they serve. Over the years, these institutions of higher learning have been tasked with expanding access to education to those who had been denied even the possibility on the basis of race, economic stability, and a host of other factors. As leaders of these great institutions, community college presidents are seen as visionaries who are called to serve as the bridge between their institution and the communities they serve. In the past, the presidency has been a role largely reserved for White men with significant academic experience alone; however, in recent decades, sitting presidents have begun to retire, leaving institutional decision makers scrambling to identify new talent in a decreasing pool. While the ranks of presidency have been diversifying, men and women from racially marginalized communities still struggle to break through the glass ceiling. Within this qualitative study, I employed an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to explore the lived experiences of African American males who have successfully ascended to the role of community college president. The research question is how do African American males experience their career progression to the role of community college president? To address this question, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with sitting African American male presidents to understand their experiences. I applied a critical race theory lens to understand how each participant narrated their career progression as Black men. The findings of my study included five significant themes: (a) Black Experiences; (b) Can’t do it Alone; (c) Pressure to Perform; (d) Finding the Path; and (e) Racism exists but not a Barrier. Each of the findings represents acknowledgement of the challenges, opportunities, and experiences held by participants throughout their career journey. The implications of this study include an understanding that racism exists in the community college leadership structure and has an impact on the career decisions of Black men. This structural racism has the potential to limit the available talent pool for new community college presidents and must be addressed if these institutions are going to continue doing the critical work of providing access to education for the masses.

Diversity in leadership positions, more specifically in the higher education sector, is a critical need as higher education institutions continue to develop sustainability strategies in response to impending demographic changes (Virick & Greer, 2012). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research study was to describe the lived experiences, pathways, and successful strategies used during career trajectory by former or current African American female college presidents in the United States. Framed by intersectionality and Black feminist thought, a phenomenological qualitative research study utilized data from six African American women who were serving, or had served, as college presidents in the United States. The findings revealed that while African American female college president had an overall positive experience during their pathway to presidency, remnants of racial discrimination, gender discrimination, and the Queen Bee Syndrome had an impact on their career trajectory. Despite these roadblocks, it was determined that internal confidence, mentorships and professional development opportunities, specialized skill sets, and a community of support led to them to achieving college presidency. The findings of this study can be utilized by aspiring African American female college presidents, current university governing bodies or boards, and university human resource professionals within the United States higher education system to identify and implement strategies that better support aspirant college presidents. Book excerpt: By relying on the educational models of Wilberforce University and Morehouse College, this study gathered historical artifacts that provide critical responses to the following research questions: What were the similarities and differences between the social, historical, political and cultural forces that led to the founding of the colleges? What were the similar and different motivations and interests of the founding leaders? What were the similar and different effects of these founding leaders on their institutions in their time period? What similar and different supports did these institutions receive from their religious organizations? What can we learn from the impact of these institutions on Black higher education over the last 150 years? The project sets out to answers the aforementioned research questions through the following Chapters. Chapter 1, Purpose of the Study, provides an overview of the research topic and contextualizes the study by identifying the research questions. This Chapter provides a brief introduction to the history of Black higher education during Reconstruction in the US. It then describes the institutional context of the time period to show the need for research on this topic and to articulate the study’s significance. The second chapter, Research Design and Methodology, outlines the historical method and approach to this study. This Chapter defines and explains the selection of scientific management as the educational theory underpinning this study. It also defines and explains the use of Dr. Jim Laub’s renowned servant leadership Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) model. Chapter 3, Historical Background and Context, articulates the central problem, critical issues, and historical context that have inspired this research study. This Chapter assesses the social, historical, political and cultural forces that led to the founding of the colleges by providing a historiography of Black education during Reconstruction, while detailing its development and continued struggles. It also develops the thesis that Black education during Reconstruction was the natural by-product of the pre-existing struggle of African-American communities to achieve empowerment and self- improvement. The fourth chapter, Founding Presidents and their Institutions, provides a biographical introduction to the personal and professional experiences of Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne during his tenure as President of Wilberforce University, 1865-1876 and Rev. Dr. Joseph Robert’s tenure as President of Morehouse College, 1871-1884. Accordingly, the focus of this Chapter is fourfold. First, it elaborates the core aspects of Dr. Daniel Alexander Payne’s tenure as President of Wilberforce University. It, then, shifts to draw out the phases of the historical development of Wilberforce University. Thirdly, it elaborates the key constituents of Dr. Joseph Robert’s presidency of Morehouse College. And lastly, it maps out the historical development of Morehouse College. Chapter 5, Institutional Comparisons focuses on conducting institutional and leadership profile assessments. The institutional assessment includes a demographical and mission-based comparison of the colleges. The leadership assessment compares and contrasts each president’s impact and influence on their respective institutions, and the similarities and differences of their presidential leadership. In the concluding chapter, Chapter 6, the conclusion builds from the research questions to determine what can be learned from the impact of these institutions on Black higher education over the last 150 years. Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines deeply the career trajectories of 13 women of color administrators at the dean, vice president, and president levels in the California community college (ccc) system. The study focuses particular attention on the specific opportunities and challenges that some of these women have encountered on their leadership career journeys by analyzing the following research question: How have women of color administrators navigated their career trajectories in the California Community College system? In addition, a subquestion asks, what strategies and sources of support have women of color in the California Community College system used to overcome multiple obstacles in their professional lives as administrators? In addition to describing the context of a post-affirmative action/Proposition 209 environment that does not allow race to be a sole or primary factor in ccc hiring decisions, the study reviews the relevant literature on the subjects of career development for women of color and the role of women of color in academia. The study uses as a lens for data analysis a theoretical framework that includes gender considerations (feminism/womanism), racialization (Critical Race Theory), and the intersectionality of these perspectives as a way to highlight the social constructions of race and gender that emerges from the study's data. The study uses snowball sampling to identify 13 women of color community college administrators who serve in dean, vice president, and president positions. The interview group consisted of five African Americans, five Latinas, and three Asian Americans. Each individual was asked about her education, career history, community college experience, strategies, and sources for support. The first theme that emerged, the "Traditionally Untraditional Career Path," indicated that some participants encountered racism, sexism, and cultural differences that affected their journeys. Given that these women of color have all been affected by their race, class, and gender in their careers, this situation rendered their careers inherently nontraditional. The second theme that emerged was "Strategic Connections: Strategies and Sources of Support" which revealed several elements, such as the mentoring and networking that women of color in the ccc system have used to navigate their professional lives as administrators. The third theme, "Leading as a Gendered and Racialized Administrator," highlighted the gendered and racialized positioning of women of color as administrators and emerged from some participants' experiences with overt racism, racial microaggressions, and the pressure of assimilation to a White male culture and leadership style.
