Book excerpt: Career decision making self efficiency (CDMSE) research is currently limited by the overwhelming use of college student samples which have failed to provide direct insight in to adolescent career transitions. Moreover, the few studies that have used adolescent samples have not reported consistent findings in line with previous CDMSE research and have not used samples representative of different educational pathways. This study set out to address these issues by exploring differences between adolescents engaged in traditional (mainstream) and non traditional (alternative) educational pathways. More specifically this study examined whether predictive models of CDMSE suggested in the literature were consistent with adolescent populations; and whether those predictive models differed for adolescents in different educational groups. A sample of 233 participants (14-18 years of age) were recruited from South Australian high schools, alternative education schools, community youth agencies and further education and training institutions. A questionnaire incorporating measures of CDMSE, perceived social support and locus of control was completed by all participants. Results revealed that the predictive model generated for CDMSE was not consistent with that described in the literature and additionally the predictive models generated for each educational group were considerably different. Furthermore, results revealed that adolescents in different educational groups differed for some career related variables such as CDMSE and perceived support, but did not differ for others such as locus of control. These findings underline the need to be cautious in generalising results of previous CDMSE research to adolescent populations.

Book excerpt: Family support and gender are important variables for understanding an individual's career development behavior particularly their ability to confidently complete career related tasks. Despite the growing literature examining family support and gender influences on the career decision-making self-efficacy of college students in western countries such as the U.S. and Europe, little research has been conducted with non-western countries such as Kenya. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between career decision-making self-efficacy and family support factors of Moi University students. The career decision-making self-efficacy scale short-form (CDMSES-SF; Betz, Klein, & Taylor, 1996) measured career decision-making self-efficacy, and family support factors were measured by the family influence scale (FIS; Fouad et al., 2010). Students reported high CDMSE, but gender did not significanty predict students' CDMSE. Out of the four family support factors, only informational support and financial support significantly predicted students' CDMSE. Moreover, there was no statistically significant relationship on the interaction between gender and informational support and gender and financial support. These findings indicate the important role that family support plays in the CDMSE of their children.

Book excerpt: Follow-up studies continue to document a low rate of successful transition for adolescents with learning disabilities. Current career counseling programs may, therefore, be ineffective for adolescents with learning disabilities. Self-efficacy beliefs, an individual's perceived performance capabilities, have been found to be an important explanatory construct in the development of career interest independent of abilities and aptitudes. The majority of career self-efficacy research thus far has been conducted with samples of older college students and adults. Furthermore, investigations have not focused specifically on persons with disabilities. The current study assessed aptitudes, interests, self-efficacy beliefs, sources of efficacy information, and outcome expectations pertaining to relevant careers among a sample of 96 secondary students with learning disabilities. Person input variables other than aptitude (i.e., gender, race, grade, socioeconomic status, and IQ level) also were included in the study design. Zero order correlations and hierarchical multiple regressions were utilized to investigate hypothesized relationships. Findings indicated that self-efficacy beliefs were a consistent and substantial predictor of interest in corresponding career areas. Ratings of hypothesized sources of efficacy information, in turn, were found be significant predictors of self-efficacy beliefs in corresponding career areas, with the exception of emotional arousal as a source of information. Ratings of sources of efficacy information also were related to career interest scores. However, as hypothesized, findings indicated that ratings of self-efficacy beliefs mediated these associations. Person input variables, most notably measures of aptitude, were not found to be related to career self-efficacy beliefs or interests in corresponding career areas. Ratings of outcome expectations belonging to the self-evaluative class (i.e., sense of accomplishment, security, and prestige) exhibited a significant positive relationship with interest scores for corresponding career areas. The findings of the present study suggest that earlier results focusing on the career development of adult populations without disabilities may now be reconsidered for generalization to adolescents with learning disabilities. The importance of considering the influence of subjective factors (i.e., interests and self-efficacy beliefs) rather than only objective skills (i.e., aptitudes and abilities) on the career development of adolescents with learning disabilities is suggested through interventions and strategies.

Book excerpt: Adolescence is an important period during which decision about the future is made and career is carved out, but unfortunately many experience episodes of career indecision. The aim of this research is to determine if career thoughts, parental support, career decision-making self-efficacy can predict adolescents’ career indecision. The study utilized the descriptive correlational method as its design and the participants were chosen through purposive sampling procedure with 538 adolescent-respondents. The variables were measured by four standardized instruments, namely: Career Thought Inventory (CTI), Career Decision-making Self-efficacy short form (CDSE), Career Related Parental Support (CRPS) and Career Decision Scale (CDS). The data were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics such as means and standard deviations and further treated using correlations and multiple regression. Results showed that adolescents’ career indecision is significantly correlated with career thoughts, parental support and career decision making self-efficacy. Moreover, a regression analysis, using adjusted R2 showed that 56% of the variation in career indecision is attributed to said variables. Also a semi-structured interview was conducted among 28 selected students to determine adolescent career indecision. The said findings demonstrated the relationship and the importance of the three predictor variables in making good career decision. Thus, a career guidance program focusing on the three predictor was developed and implemented.

Book excerpt: The impact of temporary labor migration to career choice of Filipino adolescents has not yet reached the attention of many. Thus, the purpose of this research is to examine the effects of work migration of parents to the career decision making of the children of OFW families. Using descriptive correlational design, the first phase of the research delved on career decision self-efficacy level and its relationship to negative career thoughts. Of the 140 freshman college engineering and information technology students who are children of overseas migrant workers, 25 % were identified to have career indecision. To determine the relationship among the variables, Career decision Self-Efficacy Short Form (CDSE-SF) and Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) were administered. Findings revealed that there is no relationship between the variables. The second phase of the research made use of descriptive survey method. Factors such as; personal determinants, environmental determinants and situational determinants were identified, and how these factors influence the career decision making of students with OFW parents. Furthermore, the respondents work abroad plans were discussed. Results revealed that influence of parents, family members, peers and teachers are important factors in choosing college major.
