Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts and emerging trends in the fields of cardiology and angiology. Cardiology is the branch of medical science that deals with heart related diseases while angiology studies the diseases of lymphatic system and blood vessels. These are interrelated fields as angiology tries to prevent diseases related to cardiovascular systems such as heart attack and strokes. Diagnostic procedures include auscultation, echocardiography, cardiac stress test, sphygmomanometer, cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, cardiac marker, optical coherence tomography, etc. Cardiology and angiology are upcoming branches of medical science that have undergone rapid development over the past few decades. This book covers in detail some existent theories and innovative concepts revolving around these disciplines. It will provide comprehensive knowledge to all the readers including researchers, doctors and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arterial and venous diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality in most of the world, especially in the western hemisphere. Not only of interest to angiologists, these illnesses are also of concern to most physicians in various fields ranging from cardiology, general medicine and cardiovascular surgery to physiology, pathology and clinical pharmacology. Specialists in diabetes, hypertension and epidemiology find these illnesses as challenging in their own fields of interest due to the gross interrelation of these diseases with their specialities. This book of 35 chapters contains an up-to-date discussion of various arterial and venous illnesses presenting major clinical applications ranging from basic pathology, haemodynamics and haemorheology to clinical features and management. Special attention has also been paid to epidemiology and prevention, discussing all the issues concerned. A special section on vascular emergency has also been included, thereby extending its usefulness to physicians and surgeons working in accident and emergency units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed guide to a new integrative approach to the prevention and treatment of various cardiac disorders and risk factors, including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. This approach combines various strategies, including metabolic cardiology, low-dose medicine, exercise programs, stress management programs, evaluation for inherited risk factors, and various other healing modalities. Metabolic cardiology focuses on the prevention, management, and treatment of cardiovascular disease at the cellular level through biochemical interventions with nutritional supplements that can promote energy production in the heart. Low-dose medicine, on the other hand, interprets pathological phenomena as an imbalance in intercellular signaling that may be corrected through the administration of low physiological doses of messenger molecules. Therapies outside of mainstream medicine may also be deployed in integrative cardiology, for example acupuncture, herbal medicine, and homeopathy. Integrative Cardiology will be of interest to all practitioners wishing to learn about an approach that incorporates the incredible advances in medication and technology with a focus on nutrition, lifestyle, and mind–body influences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coronary Heart Disease: Clinical, Pathological, Imaging, and Molecular Profiles presents a comprehensive picture of ischemic heart disease for practitioners, students, and investigators dealing with the varied facets of this complex subject. Individual chapters introduce the anatomy of the coronary blood vessels and cardiac development, while others consider current imaging modalities utilized for ischemic heart disease, including stress echo, nuclear diagnostic tests, non-invasive coronary artery imaging, and coronary angiography. Imaging chapters provide key clinical information on techniques and indications, and include examples of both normal and abnormal patterns. The principle thrust of the book concerns coronary atherosclerosis, the pathology of which is presented in conjunction with the results of anatomic, non-invasive imaging and angiographic studies. Related chapters cover atherogenesis, presenting new insights into the pathophysiology of the vulnerable plaque, the role of progenitor cells in vascular injury, inflammation and atherogenesis, and the genomics of vascular remodeling. Additional topics covered include angina pectoris, acute coronary syndromes, healed myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure, catheter-based and surgical revascularization, and surgical treatment of myocardial infarction and its sequelae. With contributions from a diverse group of internationally-known physicians with broad experience in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease, this book will be a valuable resource for practitioners in clinical cardiology, thoracic surgery, pathology, and cardiovascular molecular research, as well as for students in training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interventional Cardiology came into being during early 1950s. Interventional cardiology has seen substantial advances in last couple of decades, be it World or India. Interventional Cardiology started as brachial artery coronary cine angiography. The initial decade after the advent of interventional cardiology was only dedicated to its diagnostic use; it was in late seventies when the horizon of interventional cardiology broadened. In 1977 Andreas Gruentzig introduced the cardiologist to therapy, with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). This initially slender spectrum of balloon dilatation has broadened into the large spectrum of interventional cardiology, which now encompasses both diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for coronary artery disease. The main advantages of interventional cardiology are the avoidance of the pain, scars, and long postoperative recovery associated with surgery. The book is a comprehensive guide to understand the clinical application of Interventional Cardiology with special reference and experience in India. The authors have put together the most relevant facts about the disease for an easy comprehension and understanding of the same by practitioners and students across the specialty.

This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolution began in my professional career and education in 1997. In that year, I visited the University of Minnesota to discuss collaborative opportunities in cardiac anatomy, physiology, and medical device testing. The meeting was with a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesiology, Professor Paul Iaizzo. I didn’t know what to expect but, as always, I remained open minded and optimistic. Little did I know that my life would never be the same. . . . During the mid to late 1990s, Paul Iaizzo and his team were performing anesthesia research on isolated guinea pig hearts. We found the work appealing, but it was unclear how this research might apply to our interest in tools to aid in the design of implantable devices for the cardiovascular system. As discussions progressed, we noted that we would be far more interested in reanimation of large mammalian hearts, in particular, human hearts. Paul was confident this could be accomplished on large hearts, but thought that it would be unlikely that we would ever have access to human hearts for this application. We shook hands and the collaboration was born in 1997. In the same year, Paul and the research team at the University of Minnesota (including Bill Gallagher and Charles Soule) reanimated several swine hearts. Unlike the previous work on guinea pig hearts which were reanimated in Langendorff mode, the intention of this research was to produce a fully functional working heart model for device testing and cardiac research.
