Book Synopsis Free-Radical-Induced DNA Damage and Its Repair by : Clemens Sonntag
Download or read book Free-Radical-Induced DNA Damage and Its Repair written by Clemens Sonntag and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The free-radical chemistry of DNA had been discussed in some detail in 1987 in my book The Chemical Basis of Radiation Biology. Obviously, the more recent developments and the concomitant higher level of understanding of mechanistic details are missing. Moreover, in the living cell, free-radical DNA damage is not only induced by ionizing radiation, but free-radical-induced DNA damage is a much more general phenomenon. It was, therefore, felt that it is now timely to review our present knowledge of free-radical-induced DNA damage induced by all conceivable free-radical-generating sources. Originally, it had been thought to include also a very important aspect, the repair of DNA damage by the cell’s various repair enzymes. Kevin Prise (Cancer Campaign, Gray Laboratory, L- don) was so kind to agree to write this part. However, an adequate description of this strongly expanding area would have exceeded the allocated space by much, and this section had to be omitted. The directors of the Max-Planck-Institut für Strahlenchemie (now MPI für Bioanorganische Chemie), Karl Wieghardt and Wolfgang Lubitz, kindly allowed me to continue to use its facilities after my retirement in 2001. Notably, our - brarian, Mrs. Jutta Theurich, and her right-hand help, Mrs. Rosemarie Schr- er, were most helpful in getting hold of the literature. I thank them very much. Without their constant help, this would have been very difficult indeed.

This book was released on 1987-10-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II/17 c is the third part of a supplement to the pre- vious compilations II/1 and II/9 a-d2 on magnetic properties of free radicals published in 1965 and 1977-1980, which covered the literature up to 1975. Due to the still very rapid development of the field and the inclusion of new sub- jects, the supplement covering the period 1975-85 had to be split into subvolumes, which will appear in fast succession. Togetherwith the ealier volumes, II/17 offers an up-to-date and comprehensive surveyand a collection of data on impor- tant chemical intermediates.

Book Synopsis Chemistry of the Climate System by : Detlev Möller
Download or read book Chemistry of the Climate System written by Detlev Möller and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the modern world. The chemistry of the air within the framework of the climate system forms the main focus of this monograph. This problem-based approach to presenting global atmospheric processes begins with the chemical evolution of the climate system in order to evaluate the effects of changing air composition as well as possibilities for interference within these processes. Chemical interactions of the atmosphere with the biosphere and hydrosphere are treated in the sense of a multi-phase chemistry. From the perspective of a "chemical climatology" the book offers an approach to solving the problem of climate change through chemistry.
Book Synopsis Reactive Modifiers for Polymers by : S. Al-Malaika
Download or read book Reactive Modifiers for Polymers written by S. Al-Malaika and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical modification of polymers by reactive modifiers is no longer an academic curiosity but a commercial reality that has delivered a diverse range of speciality materials for niche markets: reactively grafted styrenic alloys, maleated polyolefins, super-tough nylons, silane modified and moisture-cured polyolefins, and thermoplastic elastomers, are but few exam ples of commercial successes. Although the approach of reactive modification of polymers has been largely achieved either in solution or in the solid state (through in situ reactions in polymer melts), it is the latter route that has attracted most attention in the last two decades owing to its flexibility and cost-effective ness. This route, referred to as reactive processing, focuses on the use of suitable reactive modifier(s) and the adoption of conventional polymer processing machinery, an extruder or a mixer, as a chemical reactor, to perform in situ targeted reactions for chemical modification of preformed polymers. This relatively simple, though scientifically highly challenging, approach to reactive modification offers unique opportunities in exploiting various reactive modifiers for the purpose of altering and transforming in a controlled manner the properties of preformed commercial polymers into new/speciality materials with tailor-made properties and custom-designed performance for target applications. Such an economically attractive route constitutes a radical diversion away from the traditional practices of manufacturing new polymers from monomers which involves massive in vestments in sophisticated technologies and chemical plants.
Book Synopsis Carbon-Centered Radicals II / Kohlenstoffradikale II by : K.-D. Asmus
Download or read book Carbon-Centered Radicals II / Kohlenstoffradikale II written by K.-D. Asmus and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-12-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free radicals, which are key intermediates in many thermal, photochemical and radiation processes, are important for a proper understanding of fundamental natural processes and the successful development of organic syntheses. After about one decade "volume II/18" serves as a supplement and extension to "volume II/13" and covers rate constants and other kinetic data of free radical reactions in liquids. "Furthermore II/18" contains new chapters on reactions of radicals in excited states and of carbenes, nitrenes and analogues. Selected species in aqueous solutions for which other compilations are available were deliberately omitted as before, and for the same reason electron transfer equilibria of organic radicals were not covered.
