Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SMART MATERIALS FOR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING Smart materials, also known as advanced or creative materials, are described as advanced materials that react intuitively to environmental changes or as materials that can return to their original shape in response to certain stimuli. Smart materials are classified as either active or passive based on their characteristics. There are two types of active materials. The first kind cannot change its characteristics when subjected to outside stimuli, for example photochromatic spectacles that only alter their color when exposed to sunlight. The other, which includes piezoelectric materials, can change one sort of energy (thermal, electrical, chemical, mechanical, or optical) into another. When subjected to external pressure, it can generate an electric charge. As an example, optical fibers can transmit electromagnetic waves. In contrast, passive smart materials can transmit a specific sort of energy. They have some amazing qualities that set them apart from other materials, such as transiency, meaning they can react to different kinds of external stimuli immediately, self-actuation or the capacity to change their appearance and shape, selectivity where the response is divided and expected, directness when the response is limited to the activating event, shape-changing where the material can change its shape to external stimuli, their ability to determine their own health, also known as self-diagnosis, and their ability to self-heal. The ability to synthesize novel materials has substantially progressed thanks to science and technology over the past 20 years. They fall mostly into the following four categories: polymers, ceramics, metals, and smart materials. Among these, smart materials are gaining popularity since they have more uses than conventional materials. Smart materials are unusual substances that have the ability to alter their properties, such as those that can immediately change their phase when placed near a magnet or their shape simply by applying heat. Humanity will be significantly impacted by this new era of smart materials. For instance, some of them can adapt their properties to the environment, some have sensory capabilities, some can repair themselves automatically, and some can degrade themselves. These extraordinary properties of smart materials will have an effect on all facets of civilization. There are many different types of intelligent materials, including magnetorheological materials, electro-rheostat materials, shape memory alloys, piezoelectric materials, and more. This book describes many forms of smart materials and their possible uses in various fields. A literature survey discusses the different types of smart materials, such as based ceramics, polymers, and organic compounds and their needs, advantages, disadvantages, and applications will be comprehensively discussed. A discussion of well-established smart materials including piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, shape memory alloy, electro-rheological fluid, and magnetorheological fluid materials will be discussed with their present prospects.

Book excerpt: Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) have unique properties that can be used to form smart materials. This is a recent area of research, and little work has been done beyond the invention of buckypaper electrochemical actuators. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the piezoresistive and electrochemical properties of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT), Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWNT) and nanotube polymer composite materials. Based on these properties, a strain sensor, a corrosion sensor, a power transducer, and an actuator were developed in this dissertation. These new nanotube-based smart materials have unique advantages and also limitations when compared to existing smart materials. One nice advantage is the multi-functionality of the material. This is illustrated by a sensor developed in this study that simultaneously uses both the piezoresistivity and electrochemical impedance properties of carbon nanotubes for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications. In addition, a biomimetic Artificial Neural System (ANS) was proposed that can cover large areas and monitor the health of a structure in real time, much like the neural system in the human body. The nanotube based sensor system can be easily installed on large structures using a spray-on technique, making the sensor low cost and practical. The characteristics of the sensors developed were modeled and verified by experiments. Also, Carbon Nanofibers (CNF), which are similar to nanotubes, were investigated for use as a low cost sensor material in the study. Power generation using nanotubes and nanofibers in aqueous and dry environments was also investigated. The aim was to provide autonomous power for a SHM sensor system. The voltage output of the nanotube power cell was determined for a few different ionic liquids and polymers. An interesting mechanism of power generation for the dry CNT material was found. An electrostatically charged material reciprocating perpendicular to the nanotube film produced a measurable voltage signal and a small power output. This indicates that power harvesting from electromagnetic fields may be possible using a dry nanocomposite structural material. The dry power harvesting material could provide a significant advantage in engineering applications where a direct power source is not available, but where an electromagnetic field is. The electrochemical actuation property of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers was also studied. In particular, the actuation property of MWNT and CNF was demonstrated. These fibers have a cost advantage compared to SWNT in structural applications. Initial strain modeling of the actuator was done and a constitutive law to model the actuator was proposed for further study. A multi-functional hybrid transducer was also suggested as an idea for further study with structural health monitoring applications in mind. The limitations of nanotube smart materials center on the processing of the nanocomposite to bring the great properties of nanotubes to the macroscale. Dispersing the nanotubes in the polymer, aligning the nanotubes, providing ion exchange, and achieving a strong bond between the nanotube and the polymer are significant obstacles that presently limit the performance of nanostructured materials. The polymer nanocomposite material developed using MWNT was found to reduce the problems of bundling and slipping observed in SWNT actuators. An overall exciting outcome of this dissertation is that with continuing development and improvement of the processing of nanotube-based materials, a new class of smart structural composite materials is anticipated that can be broadly used in the future. Applications of these materials may range from nanomedicine to space vehicles. Miniature robots, advanced lightweight airfoil structures with built-in controls, wireless motors with high energy density, active biomedical implants, surgical tools, active catheters, and other applications may become practical based on nanoscale smart materials.
