Book excerpt: Electroless Nickel Plating: Fundamentals to Applications provides a complete and actualized view of electroless nickel plating, thus greatly improving the accessibility of knowledge on the subject. It touches upon all aspects of electroless nickel, from the fundamentals (including thermodynamics of electroless plating, bath chemistry, and substrate preparation) to more applied areas of the field such as bath replenishment, composite coatings, post-treatments, polyalloys, graded and multilayer coatings, ultrasound assistance, applications, and properties. Contributed to by a variety of international authors to ensure different points of view and interests are addressed, this book stands as the first complete and updated state-of-the-art text on electroless nickel in the twenty-first century. It also serves as the first technical book with a strong emphasis on nickel-boron. It also focuses on environmental aspects. Including cutting-edge content presented sufficiently extensive to be directly useful to the practitioner, this book is aimed at materials scientists, metallurgists, and other professionals working with electroless nickel plating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the first International Conference on the Science of Hard Materials held in Moran, Wyoming, Aug. 23-28, 1981. The objective of the conference was to review and advance the state of knowledge of the basic physical and chemical properties of hard materials and show how these properties influence performance in a variety of applications. To this end, the 49 con tributed papers and the four keynote papers by Prof. Fischmeister and Drs. Hintermann, Exner and Almond, present an excellent overview of the state of the art in the "science" of hard materials. The contents of these proceedings also reflect the fact that hard metal technology is now well matured and several aspects of the behavior of these materials are well understood and firmly established. Structure-property relationships in this class of materials are currently well known. Pitfalls in some of the traditional test methods have been recognized and new test methods are being developed which discriminate between intrinsic material properties and flaw content and distribution. Application of fracture mechanics, al though a late corner to the hard materials area (as compared to other structural materials), is rapidly gaining acceptance and new fracture toughness test methods are being developed. Application of modern analysis and analytical techniques to these materials has begun and entirely new and unexpected information has been obtained. For a variety of reasons, "hard metals" have dominated the research and development scene of "hard materials".

Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a four volume set of the Comprehensive Guide for Nanocoatings Technology. Nanocoatings are a kind of thin film with at least one nanometric dimension. The main difference between nano and ordinary coatings is in their structure and properties. To recognise these differences, it is required to study the properties and structure of nanocoatings. The properties of every substance are controlled by their constituents. In this regard, properties of coatings depend on the constituent grains and particles. The chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of nanocoatings including their electrical resistance, permeability, corrosion and abrasion resistance, and magnetic properties, which are a function of structure and particle size of coatings. It is evident that use of these features creates many potential applications. This volume mainly discusses the deposition and growth mechanism of nanocoatings. There are 16 chapters in this volume; each one includes examples of these interesting materials, supported by appropriate figures for better clarification.
