Soehren closely examines the lives of several key figures in Scripture and pinpoints how they brought their lives into alignment with God's will and captured God's love. Book excerpt: God Loves Us consists of thirteen lessons that reveal Gods love for you. Each weekly lesson has seven daily challenges for the week. These challenges are aimed in helping you walk each day with the Lord, knowing how he reveals his perfect love for you. Knowing his love brings a lasting peace and joy that only comes from God through the Spirit. At the end of each day, there are five questions to answer, enabling you to reflect on the day. The goal of the thirteen weekly lessons, with seven daily challenges per week, is to renew the mind, where walking and communing with Lord will become natural. The more we commune with, praise, and thank God, the more natural it becomes, because God created us to walk with him. As you complete these weekly lessons and daily challenges, it is my prayer that you will trust the Lord more and live life to the fullest with peace and joy, knowing that God is with you and loves you more than anyone can imagine. You can go to www.foreverlearnaboutGod.com and view a short video that gives an introduction to each lesson.
Book Synopsis Prayer - 10th Anniversary Edition by : Richard J. Foster
Download or read book Prayer - 10th Anniversary Edition written by Richard J. Foster and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best-selling author Richard J. Foster offers a warm, compelling, and sensitive primer on prayer, helping us to understand, experience, and practice it in its many forms-from the simple prayer of beginning again to unceasing prayer. He clarifies the prayer process, answers common misconceptions, and shows the way into prayers of contemplation, healing, blessing, forgiveness, and rest. Coming to prayer is like coming home, Foster says. "Nothing feels more right, more like what we are created to be and to do. Yet at the same time we are confronted with great mysteries. Who hasn't struggled with the puzzle of unanswered prayer? Who hasn't wondered how a finite person can commune with the infinite Creator of the universe? Who hasn't questioned whether prayer isn't merely psychological manipulation after all? We do our best, of course, to answer these knotty questions but when all is said and done, there is a sense in which these mysteries remain unanswered and unanswerable . . . At such times we must learn to become comfortable with the mystery." Foster shows how prayer can move us inward into personal transformation, upward toward intimacy with God, and outward to minister to others. He leads us beyond questions to a deeper understanding and practice of prayer, bringing us closer to God, to ourselves, and to our community.

Book Synopsis Faith, Flourishing, and Agnosticism by : T. Ryan Byerly
Download or read book Faith, Flourishing, and Agnosticism written by T. Ryan Byerly and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith, Flourishing, and Agnosticism uses conceptual and empirical methods to argue that the many individuals who have ambiguous evidence for God can grow in virtue and attain greater flourishing by engaging in practices of faith toward God. The book develops a way of thinking about God, called minimal theism. It argues that a sizeable number of people have ambiguous evidence for God, and it provides support for arguments for agnosticism through an evaluation of theistic and atheistic arguments and higher-order evidence about God. It discusses what kind of cognitive commitments toward God are required to engage in faith practices such as thanking or praising God, and develops unique arguments that these can be supplied by beliefs or non-doxastic assumptions but not other states. Four pathways whereby individuals with ambiguous evidence for God can grow in virtue through such faith practices are identified. First, they can grow in general virtuous tendencies to give other people the benefit of the doubt by giving God the benefit of the doubt. Second, they can indirectly grow in a broad range of virtues by experiencing better mental health as a consequence of accepting God's love. Third, they can make skilled use of the worldview of minimal theism to cultivate transformative experiences of awe and connectedness, thereby supporting the specific virtue of spiritual excellence. Finally, by this same process, they can reap further downstream benefits in character growth, independently of whether spiritual excellence is virtuous.

Book Synopsis Forgiveness by : Matthew Ichihashi Potts
Download or read book Forgiveness written by Matthew Ichihashi Potts and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply researched and poignant reflection on the practice of forgiveness in an unforgiving world In this sensitive and probing book, Matthew Ichihashi Potts explores the complex moral terrain of forgiveness, which he claims has too often served as a salve to the conscience of power rather than as an instrument of healing or justice. Though forgiveness is often linked with reconciliation or the abatement of anger, Potts resists these associations, asserting instead that forgiveness is simply the refusal of retaliatory violence through practices of penitence and grief. It is an act of mourning irrevocable wrong, of refusing the false promises of violent redemption, and of living in and with the losses we cannot recover. Drawing on novels by Kazuo Ishiguro, Marilynne Robinson, Louise Erdrich, and Toni Morrison, and on texts from the early Christian to the postmodern era, Potts diagnoses the real dangers of forgiveness yet insists upon its enduring promise. Sensitive to the twenty-first-century realities of economic inequality, colonial devastation, and racial strife, and considering the role of forgiveness in the New Testament, the Christian tradition, philosophy, and contemporary literature, this book heralds the arrival of a new and creative theological voice.
Book Synopsis Thinking Theologically by : Eric D. Barreto
Download or read book Thinking Theologically written by Eric D. Barreto and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are constantly engaged in processing data and sensory inputs all around us, even when we are not conscious of the many neural pathways our minds are traveling. So taking a step back to ponder the dimensions and practices of a particular way of thinking is a challenge. Even more important, however, is cultivating the habits of mind necessary in a life of ministry. This book, therefore, will grapple with the particular ways that the theological disciplines invite students to think but also the ways in which thinking theologically shapes a student’s sense of self and his or her role in a wider community of belief and thought. Thinking theologically is not just a cerebral matter; thinking theologically invokes an embodied set of practices and values that shape individuals and communities alike. Thinking theologically demands both intellect and emotion, logic and compassion, mind and body. In fact, this book—as part of the Foundations for Learning series—will contend that these binaries are actually integrated wholes, not mutually exclusive options.
