Samson propagated fig trees extensively with cuttings obtained from the Stanford Ranch. Since the trees were growing mostly in a row along an irrigation ditch, Mr. Samson numbered the trees from which cuttings were taken as 1, 3, 5, and 21, according to their position in the row. Nursery trees were sold and shipped under these numbers to fig growers throughout the state, although orchards from this source are now most common at Merced and Corning.
