Download or read book Disaster on Lake Erie written by Alvin F. Oickle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-13 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 9, 1841, the steamship Erie, one of the most elegant and fastest sailing between Buffalo and Chicago, departed carrying 340 passengers. Many were Swiss and German immigrants, planning to start new lives in America's heartland most never made it. The Erie erupted in flames during the night, and despite the heroic efforts of the crew of the Dewitt Clinton, 254 lives were lost. As news of this disaster spread, internationally renowned artists and writers, including Charles Dickens, were inspired to reflect on the lives lost. Historian Alvin F. Oickle's minute-by-minute account weaves together the tragic journey of the passengers, the legend that developed in the aftermath and the fury of a fire on an ocean-like lake.

Book Synopsis Ground of the Devil by : Richard Rezendes
Download or read book Ground of the Devil written by Richard Rezendes and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Rezendes wrote a book on a laser printer about thirty-five years ago, and he worked on this book for more than a year. He typed in on an old Apple desktop computer then on a laser printer. His biggest dream is that one day, he would like to publish a book. He got the idea on a magazine about a story about an asteroid that struck in Connecticut and fragments were found. The story led to earthquakes in Moodus, Connecticut. That may have been caused by water flowing through limestone, and Native Indians believed it was the devil! He thought of writing a book about it and named it Ground of the Devil. This story is about a comet that hit Moodus, Connecticut, and a creature living underground for several months before it went on its attack, and it killed people and animals, and it had magical powers. The creature looked like a huge porcupine with pricks all over it! By the way, this creature is a female with large breasts. It sprays fire like a dragon. It has a large tail and a powerful stinger. It has lobsterlike claws like a scorpion and feet like an elephant. Richard Rezendes worked at Brown University and the east Greenwich school department before retiring at age sixty-two. He will be sixty-five years old on Monday, August twentieth. He likes sports, football, basketball, and baseball, in that order. He is a bowler tenpins and currently holds a 220 average. He is five feet, eight inches, 166 pounds, and he is pretty healthy.

Book excerpt: They are ancient. They are waiting. They are patient and prepared to battle for souls Captain Raoul Rivera wrestled with the helm. His heart was turning to stone at the hopeless situation before him. The hurricane storm clouds rose in front of his ship like a huge impenetrable wall. He was choosing to take his ship into certain danger. He searched the deck below, his eyes making a quick scan for Miss Patterson. He quickly spotted her among the crew and rigging; everyone was making ready for the storm. She was smiling up at him as if she had been waiting for him to notice her. His heart swelled, and he knew that he would fight the devil himself to protect her. At that moment the hair on his neck stood on end. He looked over his shoulder. There on the western horizon crested what he dreaded most: the black sails of the Pirate Demon. Titus Ordonez, that dirty-evil pirate had found them. Would his luck and wit be enough to save his ship, crew and Brenda? Lord, help me. His whispered prayer was blown away on the wind.
Book Synopsis Floating Palaces of the Great Lakes by : Joel Stone
Download or read book Floating Palaces of the Great Lakes written by Joel Stone and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through much of the nineteenth century, steam-powered ships provided one of the most reliable and comfortable transportation options in the United States, becoming a critical partner in railroad expansion and the heart of a thriving recreation industry. The aesthetic, structural, and commercial peak of the steamboat era occurred on the Great Lakes, where palatial ships created memories and livelihoods for millions while carrying passengers between the region’s major industrial ports of Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Toronto. By the mid-twentieth century, the industry was in steep decline, and today North America’s rich and entertaining steamboat heritage has been largely forgotten. In Floating Palaces of the Great Lakes, Joel Stone revisits this important era of maritime history, packed with elegance and adventure, politics and wealth, triumph and tragedy. This story of Great Lakes travelers and the beautiful floating palaces they engendered will engage historians and history buffs alike, as well as genealogists, regionalists, and researchers.
