Book excerpt: Capital Markets and Non-bank Financial Institutions in Romaniais part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. With only three years remaining before joining the European Union, Romania is working hard to improve its capital markets and non-bank financial institutions, which remain less developed than those in other accession countries. Strengthening these sectors has become a top priority for policymakers, whose primary objective is to ensure that the financial system is sufficiently developed to serve the growing demands of the Romanian economy. During 2003 and 2004, the Romanian authorities made significant efforts to draft, adopt, and enact new legislation to align Romania with EU financial directives. Despite these efforts, however, challenges remain in the area of supervisory capacity and the implementation of laws and regulations. This study assesses key issues and recommendations for development, and reviews the specific changes which are necessary in four areas: structural reforms, market institutions, and infrastructure; accounting, transparency, and disclosure; market infrastructure; and credit enhancements.

Book excerpt: This note analyzes macro-financial interlinkages, sectoral dependencies, and potential balance sheet vulnerabilities for all resident sectors. The mission used the sectoral balance sheets compiled by the National Bank of Romania (NBR)2 to map balance sheet exposures and potential contagion channels among different sectors. The construction of intersectoral network maps sheds light on balance sheet vulnerabilities and how these developed over time, potentially leading to risks building up. This analysis helps to understand causes and effects of macro-financial imbalances, provides a coherent context in which net lending and borrowing stocks cover all sectors, and supports the development of remedial policies outlined in other areas of the FSAP.

Book excerpt: Important contribution of this book is testing the investors’ influence and accounting information on the Bulgarian capital markets and their relations with credit default swap spreads. Bulgarian capital market is a part of the SEE group countries and it is a developing country and in the process of its development, people and investors should learn more about risk, credit risk management, and their relation to the rules of the listed companies and agencies. Many factors may provoke a change in stock prices: financial and monetary policies, macroeconomic conditions, investors’ expectations and country’s sovereign credit risk. Accepting sovereign CDS spreads as measurements of investment expectations regarding the development of Bulgarian capital market, we review the role of accounting information in CDS pricing because the accounting data may help investors make the most effective decision. The aim will be accomplished by creating an empirical model, based on the theoretical ones, including a panel data approach, several accounting variables, which are expected to have an impact on CDS spreads.n this research, we analyze the joint movement of eleven financial markets of South East Europe (SEE) - Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, Romania, Montenegro, Macedonia, Banja Luka and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) using correlation and regression analysis during the period 2005-2015. We reveal the role of investors’ expectations on the capital markets dynamics and sovereign credit risk in Bulgaria. Book excerpt: With the start of the process of its transition to a market economy in early 1990, Romania joined the ranks of other reforming Eastern European countries. At the starting point of its reform program, however, Romania was in a deep economic and institutional crisis and had no experience in even modest attempts to reform its economy. This paper outlines the main characteristics of the Romanian economic system before the reform, and presents the evolution of the reform program, as well as its achievements in the first year or so since it was launched.

Book excerpt: The Swiss economy has shown resilience but the COVID-19 pandemic continues to raise uncertainty and challenges. Effective government support has helped protect employment and buttress household incomes. Nevertheless, some sectors and groups have been hit hard, with a disproportionate impact on low-middle skilled and low-wage workers. Fostering productivity growth is crucial to maintain high living standards in the future. Switzerland is one of the top OECD performers in terms of labour productivity, but productivity growth has slowed markedly over the past three decades. Lower barriers to free and open competition within the internal market and continued openness to international markets would spur competitive pressures and raise productivity and growth. In addition, effective and sustainable use of resources can sustain stronger and more inclusive growth. Raising labour market inclusiveness, by keeping higher numbers of older workers in employment as well as reducing the gender pay gap, would help the recovery and improve living standards of all. SPECIAL FEATURE: FOSTERING A STRONG LABOUR MARKET TO SUPPORT THE RECOVERY AND SUSTAIN GROWTH

More policy focus is needed on addressing Romania’s disparate socio-economic outcomes and to lift employment among groups underrepresented in formal work, including women. Faster progress is also required to decarbonise the economy by 2050.

This book was released on 2006-10-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back in the early 1990s, economists and policy makers had high expectations about the prospects for domestic capital market development in emerging economies, particularly in Latin America. Unfortunately, they are now faced with disheartening results. Stock and bond markets remain illiquid and segmented. Debt is concentrated at the short end of the maturity spectrum and denominated in foreign currency, exposing countries to maturity and currency risk. Capital markets in Latin America look particularly underdeveloped when considering the many efforts undertaken to improve the macroeconomic environment and to reform the institutions believed to foster capital market development. The disappointing performance has made conventional policy recommendations questionable, at best. 'Emerging Capital Markets and Globalization' analyzes where we stand and where we are heading on capital market development. First, it takes stock of the state and evolution of Latin American capital markets and related reforms over time and relative to other countries. Second, it analyzes the factors related to the development of capital markets, with particular interest on measuring the impact of reforms. And third, in light of this analysis, it discusses the prospects for capital market development in Latin America and emerging economies and the implications for the reform agenda.
