The authors review the theoretical literature that predicts how liquidity affects a security's required return and discuss the empirical connection between the two. Liquidity and Asset Prices surveys the theory of liquidity-based asset pricing followed by the empirical evidence. The theory section proceeds from basic models with exogenous holding periods to those that incorporate additional elements of risk and endogenous holding periods. The empirical section reviews the evidence on the liquidity premium for stocks, bonds, and other financial assets.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we provide an overview of the concerns surrounding the variations in the calculation of risk-weighted assets (RWAs) across banks and jurisdictions and how this might undermine the Basel III capital adequacy framework. We discuss the key drivers behind the differences in these calculations, drawing upon a sample of systemically important banks from Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. We then discuss a range of policy options that could be explored to fix the actual and perceived problems with RWAs, and improve the use of risk-sensitive capital ratios.

We analyze both country- and firm-level characteristics and policies that influence these investment allocations. At the country-level, we find that U.S. funds invest more in open emerging markets with stronger shareholder rights, legal frameworks and accounting policies. After controlling for country characteristics, U.S. funds are found to invest more in large growing firms with high analyst following and policies such as ADR listing and more transparent accounting policies. The impact of ADR listing and better accounting policies is most pronounced in countries with weaker investor protection. Our results suggest that steps can be taken both at the country- and the firm-level to create an environment conducive to foreign institutional investment.

Book excerpt: For many years, individual countries created their own rules and regulations for company financial accounting and reporting. As the world became more global, problems began to arise. A company could make a profit for the year if the rules in its own country were applied, but this could turn into a loss if another country’s rules were used. To prevent this confusing and misleading state of affairs, standards were issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Since 2002, the standard setter in the United States, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), has been actively engaged with the IASB in attempting to converge U.S. regulations with international accounting standards. This book describes: • The process for setting accounting regulations in the United States • Attempts to establish international standards and the barriers confronted • U.S. involvement in international activities through a process known as convergence • Differences that have halted convergence and the U.S. strategy • Frauds and questionable activities and describes the FASB’s efforts to ensure that financial statements do not mislead their users

The new infrastructure can support rapid expansion and can add new stores with the flip of a switch. From a systems point of view, Carrefour now has a 'factory' in place to deliver high-efficiency systems, tools, processes, and training." --From Chapter 9, Implementation and Operational Imperatives for ERP "The benefits of efficient information delivery are demonstrated by the results of one of the world's largest mySAP.com implementations. Siemens achieved a twenty-five percent cost reduction through streamlined information delivery and improved access to financial information. It also enhanced its reporting capabilities from seventy percent to nearly 100 percent through increased intranet availability." --From Chapter 3, Financial and Management Reporting Research shows that high-performance businesses and governments use finance technology as one of the capabilities to help executives make better decisions for resource allocation, while at the same time increasing productivity. CFO Insights: Enabling High Performance through Leading Practices for Finance ERP includes a number of case studies and lessons learned from Accenture clients across a variety of industries that have implemented, upgraded, and operated Oracle/PeopleSoft and SAP. Book excerpt: This book investigates current resistance to the ongoing change from US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). 138 countries have, thus far, adopted IFRS as a singular accounting language, while the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Accounting Standard Board (FASB), and the International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) have determined that IFRS should be adopted optionally in the United States by 2016. The book shows that IFRS should act as a singular accounting language, which will promote high transparency and a better economic position in the world financial market.
