Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores why Japan, despite being a world leader in many high technology industries such as automobiles and consumer electronics, is only a minor player in the global pharmaceutical industry. Japan provides a huge market for pharmaceuticals as the second largest consumer of prescription drugs after the United States, and is a massive importer of prescription drugs, relying on discoveries made elsewhere. This book charts the development of the industry, from the devastation resulting from the Second World War to its performance in the present day. Focusing in particular on antibiotics and anticancer drugs, the book analyses factors that have prevented Japan from leading the rapid advances in science and technology that have occurred globally over recent decades. Looking at the pharmaceutical industry, the book argues that the Japanese government’s research and development policies were not sufficiently incentivising. It also shows how the nature of capitalism in Japan - which featured close relations between government and industry as well as between and within firms - was appropriate for nurturing industrial development in the immediate post-war decades, but became much less effective in later years.

Stage theory is understood as a mid-range theory informed both by the theory of a purely capitalist society and by historical analysis. The four stages of mercantilism, liberalism, imperialism, and consumerism are theorized according to an abstract type of capital accumulation, which is understood broadly to include mutually supporting economic, ideological, legal, and political practices.

Is China creating an alternative modernity? Is China a status quo power or a reform power? Can China manage its growing international role in international institutions and in the New Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, along with infrastructure projects in the region such as One Belt One Road and the Maritime Silk Road? Can China achieve balanced interactions with ASEAN and with developing countries in the region and worldwide? How is governance in China evolving in relation to social movements, protests, labour struggles and migrant workers? Do Chinese policies in relation to religious diversity contribute to social harmony or to friction? This timely volume by Chinese and international scholars offers diverse perspectives on these questions. This book was originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

This work thoughtfully reassesses the paradigm, and extends the analysis to embrace issues of theoretical and empirical importance. In a collection of essays, the changing characteristics of international production are examined, and an interdisciplinary approach suggested for understanding the multinational enterprise in the world economy. This book, first published in 1988, will be of value not only to economists and international business analysts, but to scholars in other fields, notably organizational, marketing and management specialists.

Few developed countries do not now host a large and growing community of Japanese businessmen and Japanese corporations are now major players in more or less every market. Japan and the Global Economy looks at the reasons for this growth and at the impact of Japanese FDI, both on the countries who receive it and on the Japanese. It was Japanese investment in manufacturing, particularly in high profile industries like automobiles, that first caught widespread attention. Consequently this book pays particular attention to manufacturing, but it also includes individual chapters on the three major trade blocks - the European Community, North America and South East Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume explores extreme openness of the Singaporean economy to international trade through the role of Foreign Direct Investment in Singapore and Singapore’s investments abroad. It provides much valuable insight to how changes in the economic and policy environments impacted on the individual Singapore-based firms and their decision making processes. The book is particularly strong in the manner in which the firm level material is linked to the overall outflow of capital, the macro-level conditions and the established theoretical explanations for the export of capital. Samuel Bassey Okposin has four aims: to examine the causes of direct investment in Singapore’s economy, to investigate the motivation for Singapore firms to invest abroad, to explain overseas direct investment from Singapore and to examine Singapore’s overseas direct investment strategies, strengths and weaknesses, considering if the current trend of outward direct investment will continue into the new millennium.
