Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Romania from 1945 to 2016, Socialist Heritage explores the socialist state's attempt to create its own heritage, as well as the legacy of that project. Contrary to arguments that the socialist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe aimed to erase the pre-war history of the socialist cities, Emanuela Grama shows that the communist state in Romania sought to exploit the past for its own benefit. The book traces the transformation of a central district of Bucharest, the Old Town, from a socially and ethnically diverse place in the early 20th century, into an epitome of national history under socialism, and then, starting in the 2000s, into the historic center of a European capital. Under socialism, politicians and professionals used the district's historic buildings, especially the ruins of a medieval palace discovered in the 1950s, to emphasize the city's Romanian past and erase its ethnically diverse history. Since the collapse of socialism, the cultural and economic value of the Old Town has become highly contested. Bucharest's middle class has regarded the district as a site of tempting transgressions. Its poor residents have decried their semi-decrepit homes, while entrepreneurs and politicians have viewed it as a source of easy money. Such arguments point to recent negotiations about the meanings of class, political participation, and ethnic and economic belonging in today's Romania. Grama's rich historical and ethnographic research reveals the fundamentally dual nature of heritage: every search for an idealized past relies on strategies of differentiation that can lead to further marginalization and exclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimizing Organization Design offers a comprehensive resource and valued guide for anyone interested in improving organization performance. The book presents an approach to optimizing organization design that is based on over 100 large scale projects and 23 research studies that have been completed by Capelle Associates over the past 25 years. In addition, the book includes insightful comments from executives on their success in using this approach. Capelle’s research and client experience reveal that optimizing organization design leads to better financial performance, customer satisfaction and employee engagement. It can provide a competitive advantage and a significant return on investment. It can also become the foundation of both strategy implementation and human resources management. Capelle shows that organization design includes the alignment of a number of critical factors, including positions (vertical and functional); accountabilities and authorities (managerial and cross functional); people; deliverables and tasks. He shows that manager – direct report alignment is the single most important organization design variable. His research also shows that it is suboptimal nearly half the time. This is a horrendous waste of talent and capability, but also provides a significant opportunity for improvement in organization performance. Optimizing Organization Design clearly explains how to implement organization design improvements. This approach includes people change management, project management, and a cascading, iterative approach that is based on teams and involves education, doing real work and feedback. In addition, Optimizing Organization Design includes special sections on the role of the Board of Directors, project management, process management and compensation. In addition, the author has included four case studies and a useful glossary.

Book excerpt: Over the past several years I have made many discoveries about "System Sid Ball Hit System," Diamond System and Clock Systems. This book is designed for billiard, pool and snooker players: *New 3 cushion players will progress faster. *Pool and snooker players will learn more about applying cue ball English and how to use the diamonds or pearls on the rails to bank or kick when necessary. *Intermediate carom players will raise their scoring average along with their confidence to play a more agressive game. *Top carom players will add to their fantastic repertoire and billiard knowledge. The "System Sid" Billiard System is designed to give the shooter more answers concerning the hit on the first object ball and the exact English, speed and stroke required to score a point on almost any carom or bank shot. The "System Sid" Diamond System has both the adjustments to the cue ball English and/or cue ball speed with the correct adjustment based on your first object ball or cue ball position on a five feet by ten feet carom table. The third rail tract is not longer a mystery! My "Three Cushion Ball Hit System" works with success on all carom billiards, short angle shots or long angle shots. The missing link I discovered was to have two different ball hit systems. First, a short angle system, and second, a long angle system. Both systems share the following: *The cue ball English numbers are the same for the short and long angle systems. *The 3rd and 4th rail diamond numbers to score are the same for the short and long angle systems.
