Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatment of network information theory and its applications provides the first unified coverage of both classical and recent results. With an approach that balances the introduction of new models and new coding techniques, readers are guided through Shannon's point-to-point information theory, single-hop networks, multihop networks, and extensions to distributed computing, secrecy, wireless communication, and networking. Elementary mathematical tools and techniques are used throughout, requiring only basic knowledge of probability, whilst unified proofs of coding theorems are based on a few simple lemmas, making the text accessible to newcomers. Key topics covered include successive cancellation and superposition coding, MIMO wireless communication, network coding, and cooperative relaying. Also covered are feedback and interactive communication, capacity approximations and scaling laws, and asynchronous and random access channels. This book is ideal for use in the classroom, for self-study, and as a reference for researchers and engineers in industry and academia.

Book excerpt: This dissertation studies the communication technologies in relaying systems with multiple antennas, especially in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relaying systems. Both information-theoretic aspects and practical communication strategies are considered and analyzed. For the information-theoretic analysis, an analytical framework for the coverage of MIMO relaying systems based on an outage capacity criterion is proposed. For MIMO two-way relaying systems, different data combining schemes at the relay are compared based on their achievable rates. In addition, optimal time-division (TD) strategies for MIMO two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems are proposed and analyzed. When the optimal TD strategies are applied, the increase of the achievable rate regions in the system is significant compared to those using the equal TD strategy. For the practical transmission schemes, we propose the self-interference (SI) aided channel estimation and data detection schemes for the broadcast phase of two-way DF relaying systems. Such schemes exploit the SI in two-way DF relaying systems when the superposition coding (SPC) scheme is applied. When the network coding scheme is applied in two-way DF relaying systems, we propose an asymmetric data rate transmission scheme that utilizes the known data bits at the receivers. Such a scheme exploits the a priori known bits at the weak link receiver in the broadcast phase of two-way relaying systems.

Book excerpt: Cooperative and relay communications have recently become the most widely explored topics in communications, whereby users cooperate in transmitting their messages to the destination, instead of conventional networks which operate independently and compete among each other for channel resources. As the field has progressed, cooperative communications have become a design concept rather than a specific transmission technology. This concept has revolutionized the design of wireless networks, allowing increased coverage, throughput, and transmission reliability even as conventional transmission techniques gradually reach their limits. Cooperative and relay technologies have also made their way toward next generation wireless standards, such as IEEE802.16 (WiMAX) or LTE, and have been incorporated into many modern wireless applications, such as cognitive radio and secret communications. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides a systematic introduction to the fundamental concepts of cooperative communications and relays technology to enable engineers, researchers or graduate students to conduct advanced research and development in this area. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides researchers, graduate students, and practical engineers with sufficient knowledge of both the background of cooperative communications and networking, and potential research directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology constitutes a breakthrough in the design of wireless communications systems, and is already at the core of several wireless standards. Exploiting multipath scattering, MIMO techniques deliver significant performance enhancements in terms of data transmission rate and interference reduction. This 2007 book is a detailed introduction to the analysis and design of MIMO wireless systems. Beginning with an overview of MIMO technology, the authors then examine the fundamental capacity limits of MIMO systems. Transmitter design, including precoding and space-time coding, is then treated in depth, and the book closes with two chapters devoted to receiver design. Written by a team of leading experts, the book blends theoretical analysis with physical insights, and highlights a range of key design challenges. It can be used as a textbook for advanced courses on wireless communications, and will also appeal to researchers and practitioners working on MIMO wireless systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive techniques play a key role in modern wireless communication systems. The concept of adaptation is emphasized in the Adaptation in Wireless Communications Series through a unified framework across all layers of the wireless protocol stack ranging from the physical layer to the application layer, and from cellular systems to next-generation wireless networks. This specific volume, Adaptive Signal Processing in Wireless Communications is devoted to adaptation in the physical layer. It gives an in-depth survey of adaptive signal processing techniques used in current and future generations of wireless communication systems. Featuring the work of leading international experts, it covers adaptive channel modeling, identification and equalization, adaptive modulation and coding, adaptive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and cooperative diversity. It also addresses other important aspects of adaptation in wireless communications such as hardware implementation, reconfigurable processing, and cognitive radio. A second volume in the series, Adaptation and Cross-layer Design in Wireless Networks(cat no.46039) is devoted to adaptation in the data link, network, and application layers.
