Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique electrical engineering approach to alternative sources ofenergy Unlike other books that deal with alternative sources of energyfrom a mechanical point of view, Integration of Alternative Sourcesof Energy takes an electrical engineering perspective. Moreover, the authors examine the full spectrum of alternative and renewableenergy with the goal of developing viable methods of integratingenergy sources and storage efficiently. Readers become thoroughlyconversant with the principles, possibilities, and limits ofalternative and renewable energy. The book begins with a general introduction and then reviewsprinciples of thermodynamics. Next, the authors explore both commonand up-and-coming alternative energy sources, including hydro, wind, solar, photovoltaic, thermosolar, fuel cells, and biomass.Following that are discussions of microturbines and inductiongenerators, as well as a special chapter dedicated to energystorage systems. After setting forth the fundamentals, the authorsfocus on how to integrate the various energy sources for electricalpower production. Discussions related to system operation, maintenance, and management, as well as standards forinterconnection, are also set forth. Throughout the book, diagrams are provided to demonstrate theelectrical operation of all the systems that are presented. Inaddition, extensive use of examples helps readers better grasp howintegration of alternative energy sources can beaccomplished. The final chapter gives readers the opportunity to learn about theHOMER Micropower Optimization Model. This computer model, developedby the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), assists in thedesign of micropower systems and facilitates comparisons of powergeneration techniques. Readers can download the software from theNREL Web site. This book is a must-read for engineers, consultants, regulators, and environmentalists involved in energy production and delivery, helping them evaluate alternative energy sources and integrate theminto an efficient energy delivery system. It is also a superiortextbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a textbook for undergraduate students studying electrical and electronic engineering in universities and colleges. Therefore, the level and amount of the knowledge to be transferred to the reader is kept to as much as what can be taught in one academic semester of a university or a college course. Although the subject is rather classical and somehow well established in some respects, it is vast and can be difficult to grasp if unnecessary details are not avoided. This book is aimed to give the reader just what is necessary - with plenty of short and easily understandable examples and drawings, figures, and tables. A course on electromechanical energy conversion is a necessity in all universities and colleges entitled to grant a license for electrical engineering. This book is aimed at meeting the requirements of this essential subject by providing necessary information to complete the course. A compact chapter is included with figures and tables on energy and the restraints on its production brought about by global climate change. A new approach has been tried for some of the classic subjects including magnetic circuits and electrical machines together with today’s much-used motors.

This book was released on 2008-08-19 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among renewable sources wind power systems have developed to prominent s- pliers of electrical energy. Since the 1980s they have seen an exponential increase, both in unit power ratings and overall capacity. While most of the systems are found on dry land, preferably in coastal regions, off-shore wind parks are expected to add signi?cantly to wind energy conversion in the future. The theory of modern wind turbines has not been established before the 20th century. Currently wind turbines with three blades and horizontal shaft prevail. The drivenelectricgeneratorsareoftheasynchronousorsynchronoustype,withorwi- out interposed gearbox. Modern systems are designed for variable speed operation which make power electronic devices play an important part in wind energy conv- sion. Manufacturing has reached the state of a high-tech industry. Countries prominent for the amount of installed wind turbine systems feeding into the grid are in Europe Denmark, Germany and Spain. Outside Europe it is the United States of America and India who stand out with large rates of increase. The market and the degree of contribution to the energy consumption in a country has been strongly in?uenced by National support schemes, such as guaranteed feed-in tariffs or tax credits. Due to the personal background of the author, the view is mainly directed on Europe, and many examples are taken from the German scene. However, the sit- tion in other continents, especially North America and Asia is also considered.
