Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury As we stand upon the summit of Bell Harry Tower - more happily called the Angel Steeple of Canterbury Cathedral, looking down upon city and countryside, much of the history of England lies spread beneath our feet: the Britons were at work here before the Romans came marching with their stolid legions here to Ethelbert, Saxon King of Kent, St Augustine preached the gospel of Christ; in the church below, Becket was murdered and the Black Prince buried; to this city, to the shrine of St Thomas, came innumerable pilgrims, one of them our first great English poet; then the crash of the Reformation swept away shrines and pilgrims, the mirk and romance of mediaeval ism vanished into the mists of history, and the city to-day lives chiefly in the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of the Cathedral and Priory of Christ in Canterbury The aim of the authors of the present book is to give a trustworthy, readable, and compendious account of the Cathedral from the earliest times to the present day. To do this within the compass of a single octavo volume it has been necessary to confine the range of view strictly to the church and its custodians. Thus, since the book does not claim to be a history of the See of Canterbury, little is said about the Archbishops except when they came into contact with the defacto governing body - prior and convent before, and dean and chapter after, the Reformation. To write a history of the great Benedictine priory of Christ Church would require a separate volume; but its fortunes and internal economy are sketched in the following pages with some fulness of detail, and this we believe to be a distinctive feature of the present book. Throughout an honest attempt has been made - to go to first-hand sources of information, and the recent rearrangement of the Cathedral archives has Opened out some which have not hitherto been avail able. Full advantage has been taken of this Oppor tunity, with the result that the authors have been able to incorporate in their book some fresh matter, and much more which, if not absolutely new, has hitherto been known only to a few. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Walk in and About the City of Canterbury: With Many Observations Not to Be Found in Any Description Hitherto Published I give this little book a preface to ap prize my reader, that it is not merely an abstract of others written on the same subject, (though they are often mentioned in it, ) but such an actual survey as the title promises, and he himself may take if he pleases; designed not only to assist strangers in their searches after what is curious here, but to make the inhabitants sensible, that many things are so, which they may have seen over and over with out taking notice of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From Ancient Documents Relating to the Cathedral and Precincts of Canterbury But if the evil is spreading, the time would seem to be especially favour able for removing it. A government without any very strong prejudice against change or superstitious veneration for vested interests is in power, and might probably in consequence of the grievance which it has just inflicted upon the clergy, be the more ready to listen to their representations and redress an odious wrong; whilst the possibility of redressing it has 'been proved by the abrogation of the sale of patronage in the disestablished Church of Ireland, and the established Kirk of Scotland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral Church of Canterbury: A Description of Its Fabric and a Brief History of the Archiepiscopal See Among authorities consulted in the preparation of this volume, the author desires to name specially Prof. Willis's "Architectural History of Canterbury Cathedral" (1845), Dean Stanley's "Historical Memorials of Canterbury" (Murray, 1855, and fifth edition, 1868), and the excellent section devoted to Canterbury in Murray's "Handbooks to the English Cathedrals, Southern Division," wherein Mr. Richard John King brought together so much valuable matter, to which reference has been made too often to be acknowledged in each instance. For permission to use this the publishers have to thank Mr. John Murray. For the reproduction of the drawings of the various parts of the Cathedral, and the arms on the title page, by Mr. Walter Tallent Owen, the editors are greatly indebted to the artist, from whose volume, "Bits of Canterbury Cathedral," published by W. T. Comstock, New York, 1891, they have been taken. The illustrations from photographs in this volume have been reproduced from the originals by Messrs. Carl Norman and Co. There are larger churches and loftier churches there are, as at Wells and Salisbury, cathedral churches more picturesquely situated, but nowhere is there a cathedral of greater originality, of more complete harmony, of more obvious and striking unity. The church of Exeter, says Dr. Freeman, who by the breadth of his knowledge was more than most men competent to say it, forms a class by itself. As far as detail goes, he adds, no building of its age shows us the taste of that age in greater perfection. It does not hold its high place in the hierarchy of churches in virtue of the area of ground which it covers. It does not rank in magnitude with the great cathedral of Wessex, or the greater church of Canterbury, or with Lincoln, or with York. But in originality, in harmony, in unity, it bears comparison with the proudest of them all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
