Download or read book Bach written by Malcolm Boyd and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-18 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in its first edition in 1983, Boyds treatment of this canonical composer is essential reading for students, scholars, and everyone interested in Baroque music. In this third edition, biographical chapters alternate with commentary on the works, to demonstrate how the circumstances of Bachs life helped to shape the music he wrote at various periods. We follow Bach as he travels from Arnstadt and Muhlhausen to Weimar, Cothen, and finally Leipzig, these journeys alternating with insightful discussions of the great composers organ and orchestral compositions. As well as presenting a rounded picture of Bach, his music, and his posthumous reputation and influence, Malcolm Boyd considers the sometimes controversial topics of parody and arrangement, number symbolism, and the style and meaning of Bachs late works. Recent theories on the constitution of Bachs performing forces at Leipzig are also present. The text and the appendixes (which include a chronology, personalia, bibliography, and a complete catalogue of Bachs works) were thoroughly revised in this edition to take account of more recent research undertaken by Bach scholars, including the gold mine of new information uncovered in the former USSR.

Book Synopsis Johann Sebastian Bach by : Karl Geiringer
Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach written by Karl Geiringer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was originally published in 1967, this study of J.S. Bach was the first important work on the composer in nearly a generation. The many discoveries about Bach’s life and music that occurred in the postwar years created the need for a new interpretative study incorporating this research and this was the only book which incorporated the vast amount of material uncovered since 1950, the bicentennial of Bach’s death. The volume begins with a brief biography and is followed by an analysis of each major type of composition: vocal, organ, keyboard and instrumental music. In each section the author examines thoroughly many Bach compositions and evaluates them in relation to the rest of the composer’s work, as well as in relation to the music of his contemporaries. More than 70 music examples enable the reader to understand how Bach worked, the manner in which his genius developed and grew, and to see outstanding excerpts from his music in various stages of completion. An interesting aspect of research methods is revealed through an explanation of the detective work which has been done regarding handwriting, paper and watermarks in the original sources.

Download or read book Reminiscences of a Statistician written by Erich L. Lehmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-26 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This relatively nontechnical book is the first account of the history of statistics from the Fisher revolution to the computer revolution. It sketches the careers, and highlights some of the work, of 65 people, most of them statisticians. What gives the book its special character is its emphasis on the author's interaction with these people and the inclusion of many personal anecdotes. Combined, these portraits provide an amazing fly-on-the-wall view of statistics during the period in question. The stress is on ideas and technical material is held to a minimum. Thus the book is accessible to anyone with at least an elementary background in statistics.

Download or read book Tears into Wine written by Eric Chafe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1714, the 29 year-old Johann Sebastian Bach was promoted to the position of concertmaster at the ducal court of Weimar. This post required him for the first time in his already established career to produce a regular stream of church cantatas-one cantata every four weeks. Among the most significant works of this period is Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis in meinem Herzen (Cantata 21). Generally known in English as "I had much affliction," Cantata 21 draws from several psalms and the Book of Revelations and offers a depiction of the spiritual ascent of the soul from intense tribulation to joy and exaltation. Although widely performed and loved by musicians, Cantata 21 has endured much criticism from scholars and critics who claim that the piece lacks organizational clarity and stylistic coherence. In Tears into Wine, renowned Bach scholar Eric Chafe challenges the scholarly consensus, arguing that Cantata 21 is an exceptionally carefully designed work, and that it displays a convergence of musical structure and theological purpose that is paradigmatic of Bach's sacred work as a whole. Drawing on a wide range of Lutheran theological writing, Chafe shows that Cantata 21 reaches beyond the scope of the individual liturgical occasion to voice a breadth of meaning that encompasses much of the core of Lutheran thought. Chafe artfully demonstrates that instead of simply presenting a musical depiction of the soul's journey from sorrow to bliss, Cantata 21 expresses the various stages of God's revelation and their impact on the believing soul. As a result, Chafe reveals that Cantata 21 has a formal design that mirrors Lutheran belief in unfolding revelation, with the final movement representing the work's "crown"--the goal toward which all of the earlier movements are directed. Complete with full text translations of the cantata and the liturgical readings that would have accompanied it at the first performance, Tears into Wine is a monumental book that is ideally suited for Bach scholars and students, as well as those generally interested in the relationship between theology and music.

Download or read book The Bach Family written by Karl Geiringer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this volume was originally published in 1954 it was the first complete history of the Bach family from the 16th Century miller Veit to Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst (1759-1845), Johann Sebastian’s grandson. The author views the family as a whole and shows the characteristic similarities in their artistic and human attitudes as well as the most significant divergences. Equal stress is laid on the discussion of the personalities, against the swiftly changing historical scene, and on the music, for which the author was able to use vast, hitherto inaccessible material. Apart from describing the fascinating phenomenon of this musical family, the author gives a history of musical thought in the last 300 years.
