Download or read book A Breast Cancer Alphabet written by Madhulika Sikka and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive and approachable guide to life during, and after, breast cancer The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is simply being a woman. Madhulika Sikka's A Breast Cancer Alphabet offers a new way to live with and plan past the hardest diagnosis that most women will ever receive: a personal, practical, and deeply informative look at the road from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. What Madhulika Sikka didn't foresee when initially diagnosed, and what this book brings to life so vividly, are the unexpected and minute challenges that make navigating the world of breast cancer all the trickier. A Breast Cancer Alphabet is an inspired reaction to what started as a personal predicament. This A-Z guide to living with breast cancer goes where so many fear to tread: sex (S is for Sex - really?), sentimentality (J is for Journey - it's a cliché we need to dispense with), hair (H is for Hair - yes, you can make a federal case of it) and work (Q is for Quitting - there'll be days when you feel like it). She draws an easy-to-follow, and quite memorable, map of her travels from breast cancer neophyte to seasoned veteran. As a prominent news executive, Madhulika had access to the most cutting edge data on the disease's reach and impact. At the same time, she craved the community of frank talk and personal insight that we rely on in life's toughest moments. This wonderfully inventive book navigates the world of science and story, bringing readers into Madhulika's mind and experience in a way that demystifies breast cancer and offers new hope for those living with it.
Book Synopsis Cancer Caregiving A to Z by : American Cancer Society
Download or read book Cancer Caregiving A to Z written by American Cancer Society and published by American Cancer Society. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The role of caregiver in cancer care has expanded tremendously in recent years. People with cancer are living longer, and many cancer treatments once done in a hospital are now performed in an outpatient setting. In addition, hospital patients may be discharged early, often while they still are experiencing pain, discomfort, or other side effects from treatment. Caregivers at home suddenly have to perform tasks traditionally done by nurses, such as administering medications, monitoring symptoms, and hooking up intravenous antibiotics. Yet they have no formal training for the job. Whether the caregiver is a spouse, partner, adult child, or friend, this person fills an exceptional role--one the requires compassion and strength, as well as knowledge about health care issues. Cancer Caregiving A to Z was written by experts at the American Cancer Society to provide caregivers the knowledge they need to make the right decisions for loved ones who are recovering from cancer and the effects of cancer treatments"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease by : United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General
Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Synopsis Tumor Suppressor Par-4 by : Vivek M. Rangnekar
Download or read book Tumor Suppressor Par-4 written by Vivek M. Rangnekar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Par-4 is a naturally occurring tumor suppressor. Studies have indicated that overexpression of Par-4 selectively induces apoptosis in cancer cells while leaving normal, health, cells unaffected. Mechanisms contributing to this cancer-selective action of Par-4 have been associated with PKA activation of intracellular Par-4 in cancer cells or GRP78 expression primarily on the surface of cancer cells. On the other hand, endogenous Par-4 sensitizes cells to the action of a broad range of apoptotic inducers acting via the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways. A number of binding partners of Par-4 have been identified and shown to regulate Par-4 function in cancer and other diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and major depression. Recent studies have recognized a number of natural products, dietary supplements, synthetic molecules and FDA-approved drugs that induce the secretion of Par-4 protein to cause apoptosis in primary or metastatic tumors, one of which is in clinical trials. More than 50 different laboratories worldwide are involved in Par-4 based research of this unique protein that has progressed from the bench to clinical trials. This second, companion volume will provide a comprehensive overview of Par-4’s role in cancer and other diseases. Chapters are written by leading researchers, and will be useful for a broad audience across the scientific community, particularly students and trainees, who are the next generation of scientists and clinicians to participate in new studies and discoveries on Par-4.
