Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Canada in International Affairs written by Robert W. Murray and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that Canada and its international policies are at a crossroads as US hegemony is increasingly challenged and a new international order is emerging. The contributors look at how Canada has been adjusting to this new environment and resetting priorities to meet its international policy objectives in a number of different fields: from the alignment of domestic politics along new foreign policies, to reshaping its international identity in a post-Anglo order, its relationship with international organizations such as the UN and NATO, place among middle powers, management of peace operations and defense, role in G7 and G20, climate change and Arctic policy, development, and relations with the Global South. Embracing multilateralism has been and will continue to be key to Canada’s repositioning and its ability to maintain its position in this new world order. This book takes a comprehensive look at Canada’s role in the world and the various political and policy variables that will impact Canada’s foreign policy decisions into the future. Book Synopsis Canada's International Policies by : Brian W. Tomlin
Download or read book Canada's International Policies written by Brian W. Tomlin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada's International Policies is a landmark study of policy change and innovation in Canada's international relations. It explains why policies change when they do. The volume provides students of Canada's international relations with a close-up view of the critical factors and forces that contribute to policy transformation so that they can understand the how and why of the policy making process. It shows how policy makers wrestle with tough policy choices and why they end up making the decisions they do. The breadth of the volume is impressive, focusing on important turning points in the evolution of Canada's international policies across the domains of trade, investment, development, defense, and human security from the early days of the Cold War to the present. It describes a changing international environment and how that environment has impinged on policy choices. It also discusses the complex domestic and bureaucratic politics of decision-making. Canada's International Policies offers an innovative application of an evolutionary multiple streams model of decision-making to explain why certain problems land on the policy agenda and why a particular policy alternative is selected to address specific problems. In doing so, it highlights the importance of statecraft and the specific qualities of leadership that come into play in the ongoing policy battles between ideas, interests, and values. Unlike so many texts on international relations that offer dry, theoretical discussions of the foreign policy process, Canada's International Policies gives students a real taste of the rough and tumble world of decision-making, viewed through the lens of a sophisticated, analytical framework.
Book Synopsis Unsettled Balance by : Rosalind Warner
Download or read book Unsettled Balance written by Rosalind Warner and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since 9/11, the wars on terror, economic crises, climate change, and humanitarian emergencies have led decision makers to institute new measures to maintain security. Foreign policy analysts tend to view these decisions as being divorced from ethics, but Unsettled Balance shows that arguments about rights, obligations, norms, and values have played a profound role in Canadian foreign policy and international relations. Examining a wide range of events in Canada and abroad, the contributors to this volume collectively explore three key questions: What is the meaning of ethics and security, and how are they linked? To what extent have considerations of ethics and security changed in the twenty-first century? And what are the implications of a shifting historical context for Canada's international relations? Whether probing how Canada handles the tension between ethics and security when hosting large-scale international events, engaging in humanitarian aid initiatives, or entering into military operations, each chapter provides insight into key decisions in recent Canadian history. In a time of rapid change, this book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how Canada responds to the challenges of an increasingly volatile world and why it responds the way it does." --

Download or read book Understanding Foreign Policy Decision Making written by Alex Mintz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Foreign Policy Decision Making presents a psychological approach to foreign policy decision making. This approach focuses on the decision process, dynamics, and outcome. The book includes a wealth of extended real-world case studies and examples that are woven into the text. The cases and examples, which are written in an accessible style, include decisions made by leaders of the United States, Israel, New Zealand, Cuba, Iceland, United Kingdom, and others. In addition to coverage of the rational model of decision making, levels of analysis of foreign policy decision making, and types of decisions, the book includes extensive material on alternatives to the rational choice model, the marketing and framing of decisions, cognitive biases, and domestic, cultural, and international influences on decision making in international affairs. Existing textbooks do not present such an approach to foreign policy decision making, international relations, American foreign policy, and comparative foreign policy.
Download or read book Why Canada Cares written by Andrew Lui and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Support for international human rights has become an entrenched part of Canada's national mythology. Despite the gravity of human rights issues and how Canada appears to champion various causes, the role of human rights in Canadian foreign policy has received surprisingly little scrutiny. In Why Canada Cares, Andrew Lui brings clarity to this under-explored part of Canada's identity. Lui provides a chronological and theoretically grounded analysis of human rights in Canadian foreign policy since 1945. He argues that while the country has rarely proven willing to sacrifice material advantage for international human rights causes, Canada has pursued human rights as part of a broader attempt to cement individual rights as the cornerstone of Canadian federalism and aimed to mitigate friction between the country's diverse social groups. In other words, international human rights were implemented as a way to express and establish an expansive vision of what Canadian society should look like in order to survive and flourish as a coherent and unified political entity. The first comprehensive, single-authored book on the topic, Why Canada Cares uncovers the foundations of Canada's international human rights policies and offers insight into their possibilities and limits.

Book Synopsis Canadian Foreign Policy by : Brian Bow
Download or read book Canadian Foreign Policy written by Brian Bow and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Foreign Policy, as an academic discipline, is in crisis. Despite its value, CFP is often considered a “stale and pale” subfield of political science with an unfashionably state-centred focus. Canadian Foreign Policy asks why. Practising scholars investigate how they were taught to think about Canada and how they teach the subject themselves. Their inquiry shines a light on issues such as the casualization of academic labour and the relationship between study and policymaking. This nuanced collection offers not only a much-needed assessment of the boundaries, goals, and values of the discipline but also a guide to its revitalization.
