Book excerpt: Nonylphenyl (NP) and NP ethoxylates (NPEs) are a group of organic chemicals that are widely used as surfactants, emulsifiers, wetting agents, and dispersants in a wide variety of industrial processes & commercial products. This document provides the rationale for development of Canadian environmental quality guidelines for NP & NPEs. It contains technical background information on the chemical & physical properties of NP & NPEs and a review of their sources & emissions in Canada, the distribution & behaviour of these chemicals in the environment, their toxicological effects on aquatic & terrestrial species, and NP/NPE guidelines developed in other jurisdictions. The information is then used to derive water, sediment, & soil quality guidelines for NP/NPEs to protect ecological receptors in each of these environmental compartments. The final sections suggest areas for future research & provide guidance on implementation of the guidelines.

Book excerpt: This report provides the scientific supporting information & rationale for the development of Canadian soil quality guidelines for the protection of environmental health for toluene, ethylbenzene, & xylenes (TEX). Information is provided on TEX physical & chemical properties, analytical methods, TEX production & uses, global sources of TEX, sources & levels of TEX in the Canadian environment, environmental fate & behaviour of TEX in soil & water, and behaviour & effects in biota (terrestrial plants & invertebrates, soil microbes, livestock & wildlife), and behaviour & effects of TEX in humans & mammals, including uptake, metabolism, elimination, & toxicity. The final sections describe how the soil quality guidelines for TEX were derived and set out the guidelines for agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial land use. Areas for future research are also summarized.

Download or read book A Federal Approach to Contaminated Sites written by Canada. Contaminated Sites Management Working Group and published by Le Groupe de travail. This book was released on 1999 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document has been developed to provide a common federal approach to managing contaminated sites under federal custody. The intended audience for this approach is managers & operational personnel who are responsible for managing contaminated sites on federal lands. The approach incorporates risk-based environmental management which assesses risks to human health & the natural environment under current & intended-use scenarios and implements risk management solutions considered to be protective of those risks. Objectives, methodologies, and intended outputs are described for ten steps of the approach, from identification of suspect sites through detailed testing to final reporting & long-term monitoring. Appendices include a list of guidance documents and generic statements of work for various steps of the approach.

Book excerpt: "This document provides Federal Environmental Quality Guidelines (FEQGs) for the substance phenol, 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy), also known as triclosan, an industrial chemical that does not occur naturally in the environment. FEQGs are recommendations in quantitative or qualitative terms to support federal environmental quality monitoring. FEQGs are set at a concentration so that where the concentration of a given chemical is at or below the FEQG, there is low likelihood of direct adverse effects from the chemical on aquatic life exposed via the water or sediment, or where chemicals may bioaccumulate, in wildlife (birds and mammals) that consume aquatic life"--Provided by publisher.

Subcommittee on Environmental Quality Criteria for Contaminated Sites and published by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides the rationale and guidance for developing environmental and human health soil quality guidelines for contaminated sites in Canada. It begins with background information on the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program assessment and remediation framework, including the scientific tools developed to help assess and remediate contaminated sites. Information on the principles behind the soil quality guidelines derivation protocol is also included. This is followed by description of the processes for deriving environmental and human health guidelines. The protocol considers the effects of contaminated soil exposure on human and ecological receptors for given land uses (agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial). The final section gives guidance on derivation of the final soil quality guideline. Appendices include information on methods and models employed in the ecological sections of the document, and on check mechanisms for indirect exposure from soil contaminants for the human health guidelines.
