Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Citizenship a Treatise on Civil Government The design of the author in the preparation of this work is to give young people a general outline of the Canadian system of government, and to urge the importance of that moral and intellectual training which forms the basis of good citizenship. To persons who live under democratic institutions, an intelligent acquaintance with the manner in which they are governed is obviously essential. Political development is impossible unless the principles of civil government are understood. In England the educational progress of the last thirty years, together with the liberal extension of the franchise, has led to the circulation of several books of a popular character, dealing with the rights and duties of citizens In France, where national education has, perhaps, received more attention within the last fifteen years than in any other country of Europe, l'instruction civique is one of the most popular branches of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Law of Citizenship in the United States In the days of the Roman republic it was the proud honor of a Roman citizen to state at home and abroad cim's Roman/us sum; so it should be in this country for an American to main tain, I am an American citizen. Therefore, the elements which enter into the inquiry should be considered. The first inquiry should be the means by which citizenship is acquired; whether by descent or naturalization; in either one of these two ways citizenship is generally conferred except in cases of adoption by marriage. Municipal rules have value within the territory of their juris diction, but have no extra-territorial effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship The purpose of the present work is to present to American youths practical information as to the rights and duties which attach to American citizenship. In the effort to do this in the clearest and most logical form, the stereotyped method of giving a running commentary upon the Constitution has been discarded. Of all political forms, the federal type is the most complex; and it is, therefore, little short of absurd to attempt, as do so many text-books on Civics, to explain to students who are without previous training the constitutional relations of our elaborate system of national, state, and local governments, without first giving to them a knowledge of the nature of political authority, the purposes for which it exists, and the general governmental means through which such purposes are attained. In the present work it is believed that this error has been avoided. The student is first given that information which is essential to an understanding of citizenship and government in general, before he is called upon to study the description of our own complex government in particular. This book is therefore divided into two parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship of the United States These laws, substantially the statutes enacted more than a hundred years ago when our population was less than four millions, and when it was the policy of our government to invite immigration, were ill adapted to our modern conditions, with a population of eighty mil lions and an influx of foreigners of more than a million annually. Under these laws lax and unsatisfactory methods of naturalization had grown up, opening the way to gross frauds against our citizenship, including perjury, false impersonation, and traffic in false and counterfeit certificates of citizenship. Such certificates were sometimes sold to alien criminals to secure their ad mission to the United States, and frequently to procure protection against their home governments. Cases have actually occurred where aliens have landed on our shores for the first time, having in their possession certificates entitling them to the full rights of American citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Citizenship: By Birth and by Naturalization, With Reference to the Law of Nations, Roman Civil Law, Law of the United State+s of America, and the Law of France; Including Provisions in the Federal Constitution, and in the Several State Constitutions, in Respect of Cit It has been observed in substance, by an author who made some impression on his age, that upon all great subjects much always remains to be said. If this observation be founded in truth, - as the writer believes it to be, - and it be conceded that the subject herein treated is within the description mentioned, it would appear to be unnecessary to make apology for offering the reader a contribution to the law and literature of citizenship. That citizenship is a great question, in the most liberal meaning of the expression, will not, it is presumed, be denied. It is also a many-sided question. The term involves the idea of rights and duties, of sacred obligations and cherished prerogatives. Its present consideration has reference to the relations between individuals, as well as to the responsibilities of a state towards its own citizens and towards the citizens of other states. It will appear in the progress of this discussion why the terms "citizen" and "citizenship" have been employed in preference to other expressions which designate national character and nationality. The plan and general scope of the work will be readily understood on reference to the full title. The division of the subject adopted seemed natural; and the comparative and historical method of investigation, which has been pursued, is at once convenient and instructive. Book excerpt: The essays in Law and Citizenship provide a framework for analyzing citizenship in an increasingly globalized world by addressing a number of fundamental questions. How are traditional notions of citizenship erecting borders against those who are excluded? What are the impacts of changing notions of state, borders, and participation on our concepts of citizenship? Within territorial borders, to what extent are citizens able to participate, given that the principles of accountability, transparency, and representativeness remain ideals? The contributors address the numerous implications of the concept of citizenship for public policy, international law, poverty law, immigration law, constitutional law, history, political science, and sociology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Become a Citizen of the United States of America Every civilized State has its sovereign power. In the Old World kingdoms the monarch is the sovereign, but in the United States of America the people is the sovereign, and the law for the government of the people is the expressed word and utterance of the people. All sovereign power, that is, the power to govern and to make laws for that purpose, resides in the people, and if a law is not wise and good the people, through elected representatives, may revoke it. Hence, every citizen being in this sense a part of the law-making power in this country, it becomes the earnest duty of every one, as a unit of the whole people, to understand the character of our government and the principles upon which it is based.
