Book excerpt: Surveillance is commonly rationalized as a solution for existing problems such as crime and terrorism. This book explores how surveillance, often disguised as risk management or harm reduction, is also at the root of a range of social and political problems. Canadian scholars from diverse disciplines interrogate the moral and ideological bases as well as the material effects of surveillance in policing, consumerism, welfare administration, disaster management, popular culture, moral regulation, news media, social movements, and anti-terrorism campaigns.

Parents play a pivotal role in the development of young people in reaching their full potential in sport – indeed, the psychological and practical support of parents can be as vital to young athletes as the appropriate coaching and facilities. This book brings together current research into the impact of parenting in youth sport and examines the relationships between athletes, coaches and parents, whilst also discussing topics such as parenting styles, behaviour at competition and talent development. This book not only outlines the theories of parenting in youth sport, but also utilises research and examples from several countries, including the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. It has a research-to-practice theme and includes numerous suggestions for research projects (and getting research published). Parenting in Youth Sport is an essential text for students, lecturers and practitioners with an interest in youth sport, sport psychology or sport development.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think kids can get a little physical activity and then play video games into the wee hours while still remaining healthy, you're in for a rude awakening. The ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth is the most comprehensive assessment of child and youth physical activity in Canada. The 2016 edition has for the first time assigned a grade specifically to sleep and includes new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth: and Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep. These new Guidelines state that children and youth need a combination of high levels of physical activity, low levels of sedentary behaviour, and sufficient sleep each day to be healthy?simply, they need to Sweat, Step, Sleep and Sit the right amounts. Unfortunately, children and youth are spending way too much time being sedentary and not enough time moving: Only 9 per cent of 5-17 year olds get the recommended 60 minutes of heart-pumping activity they need each day Only 24 per cent of 5-17 year olds meet the Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommending no more than two hours of screen time per day Only 10 per cent of 11-15 year olds in Canada meet the screen time recommendation of no more than two hours per day, and only 20 per cent of the same age group report at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on all seven days of the week. Please Note - The registration fee is being charged only to cover the basic costs of running the webinar.

This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that the first 10 or so years of life create the foundation for subsequent participation in recreational and health-related physical activity. This book brings together researchers and practitioners with expertise in issues related to physical activity, physical education, and sport during the primary/elementary phase of schooling, to explore these important issues. Combining inter-disciplinary perspectives, the book addresses the inherent complexity of researching with young children. It looks at the evidence on development during the first 10 years and how that evidence relates to physical activity and to sport, in pre-school, school and out of school. Finally, the book offers a series of national case studies, from Asia, Europe and Africa, demonstrating the importance of age-appropriate sport and physical activity. This is important reading for any student, researcher, educator or policy maker with an interest in physical activity and health, education in the early years or at primary/elementary level, paediatric exercise science, or youth sport.
