Download or read book Canada Among Nations 1986 written by Brian Tomlin and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1987 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1986 edition of Canada Among Nations chronicles the momentous, ongoing debates concerning free trade negotiations with the United States. From the start, the free trade talks were bedevilled by a flurry of protectionist moves in the U.S., the most inflammatory involving a proposed duty on Canadian softwood lumber. In the face of American belligerence, the Mulroney government appeared indecisive--on the lumber issue it insisted that it would neither negotiate nor impose an export tax, and then did both. In addition to free trade, Canada Among Nations treats issues including Canada's foreign policy, its economic situation, relations with the third world, and response to contemporary arms-control proposals.

Book Synopsis Understanding Military Culture by : Allan D. English
Download or read book Understanding Military Culture written by Allan D. English and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture has been described as the "bedrock of military" effectiveness because it influences everything an armed service does. The recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have highlighted the importance of culture as a concept in analyzing the ability of military organizations to perform certain tasks. In fact, a military's culture may determine its preferred way of fighting and dealing with other challenges, like incorporating new technologies, more than its doctrine or organizational structure. This book examines military culture from a theoretical and a practical point of view. It focuses on the Canadian and American military cultures, and it provides the first detailed examination of the culture of the Canadian Forces. It also compares their culture to that of the US armed forces. The book concludes that while the culture of the Canadian Forces has been "Americanized" to a certain extent, the culture of the US armed forces, due to changes in their personnel and roles, has experienced a certain degree of "Canadianization" at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries.

Download or read book NORAD written by Andrea Charron and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has undergone wide-ranging changes since 2006, when it was given a new maritime warning mission and the NORAD Agreement was signed in perpetuity. Andrea Charron and James Fergusson trace NORAD’s recent history, marked by innovations in technology and in command and control, but also by unprecedented threats. The shared defence of North America remains an important issue that should extend to other areas, such as the joint defence of the maritime and cyber domains. Fuelled by a deep curiosity about the command and its decisions made in the face of inevitable geopolitical and technological changes, this book uses a functional lens to evaluate NORAD’s options and the technological and organizational solutions needed to defend North America. The authors investigate the ways in which the NORAD command might adapt in the future as it struggles to modernize and keep ahead of new threats. This book comes at a critical time. The rise of new peer competitors requires a fundamental reconsideration of North American defence. As one of very few contemporary analyses of the command and its future, NORAD will be a vital tool for scholars and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluates the health of the U.S.-Canadian defense industrial relationship, which is critically important as the U.S. Department of Defense expands the national technology and industrial base. The CSIS study team gathered and analyzed a wide range of quantitative data and conducted interviews with government and industry officials involved with bilateral cooperation on both sides of the border. In addition to looking at top-level history, legislation, policy, and trends, the study team undertook five sectoral case studies highlighting different aspects of the benefits from and challenges facing bilateral cooperation. The study finds that the benefits to both partners exceed what either could obtain solely by relying only on its own national resources. While the overall U.S.-Canadian defense industrial relationship remains sound, the study team identifies a range of recommendations to enhance its value to both partners.
