Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many recent developments explored in Canada's Changing North is the legal recognition of aboriginal rights by the Canadian state, which has led directly to significant increases in their political and economic power. It also examines how economic development, which has long focused on non-renewable natural resources, particularly minerals, has grown to an enormous scale. Development of arctic oil and gas, which hinges on world supplies and national and international politics, has meant major changes across the North. Some of the new national parks in the Canadian North are already under threat from mineral development. Northern tourism has made it possible for a wide variety of affluent visitors to visit hitherto remote areas, affecting the ecology. The final selection, on northern challenges, discusses critical issues such as the impact of climatic change, the social needs (e.g. housing, education) of a rapidly increasing aboriginal population, environmental protection of unique regions, and defence of Arctic sovereignty. Of the sixty-two readings in this edition, forty-one are new.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Canadian Women’s Fiction by : C. Howells
Download or read book Contemporary Canadian Women’s Fiction written by C. Howells and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-22 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the significant changes in contemporary Canada's literary profile since the mid-1990s, within a context of the new national rhetoric of multiculturalism. By looking closely at a representative range of fictions in English by women from a variety of ethnocultural backgrounds, Howells examines the complexities embedded within Canadian identity. What does 'Refiguring Identities' mean for these writers, given their individual agendas and the multiple affiliation of any woman's identity construction? All these writers are engaged in rewriting history across generation, and Howells argues that woman's fiction negotiates new possibilities for cultural change, introducing more heterogeneous narratives of identity in multi-cultural Canada.
Book Synopsis The Canada-US Border in the 21st Century by : John B. Sutcliffe
Download or read book The Canada-US Border in the 21st Century written by John B. Sutcliffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders are critical to the development and survival of modern states, offer security against external threats, and mark public policy and identity difference. At the same time, borders, and borderlands, are places where people, ideas, and economic goods meet and intermingle. The United States-Canada border demonstrates all of the characteristics of modern borders, and epitomises the debates that surround them. This book examines the development of the US-Canada border, provides a detailed analysis of its current operation, and concludes with an evaluation of the border’s future. The central objective is to examine how the border functions in practice, presenting a series of case studies on its operation. This book will be of interest to scholars of North American integration and border studies, and to policy practitioners, who will be particularly interested in the case studies and what they say about the impact of border reform.

Book Synopsis Inter- and Transcultural Learning in the Context of Canadian Young Adult Fiction by : Grit Alter
Download or read book Inter- and Transcultural Learning in the Context of Canadian Young Adult Fiction written by Grit Alter and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the past few years transcultural learning has become one of the key terms in TEFL theory. Central concerns in current research include differentiating between inter- and transcultural learning, navigating processes of understanding otherness, and assessing cultural competences. Using these aspects this study investigates texts recommended for cultural learning and key components of implementing literature in ELT. The results call for a more holistic perception of alterity and argue in favour of transcultural literature as a basis for transcultural learning. All of this dissertation is in English.
